  • This cams app is super bad. So I remove the sim card to see. This is just a test clip! The bike is an Omnium Cargo Min-Max with Shimano 105 drivetrain I assembled this summer for commuting. I call it the omnium cargo racer simply because it is much faster than I expected when I ordered the parts! There is only one question regarding the frame. Why the heck is it designed for 142mm quick release in the rear? If Omnium released a frame for thru-axle rear wheels it would open up a world of ready built wheels. For me this meant a lot of hassle with buying the wrong wheel for the rear more than once. out of the TWO, yes two... because Omniums own were sold out and I did not want to order from the US, so there was in Europe T W O alternatives. I ordered the most expensive first but changed my mind and ordered the cheaper. This while road wheels for thru axle were abundant (countless alternatives). But yes I cornered myself because I did´nt want a gravel or "commuter" width. A really like my precious Nishiki with 23mm wide tyres and I thought it must work on a two wheeled cargo bike too (and yes it does). I bought the Shimano 105 11 speed drive train first wich was a rookie failure from my side but after all I´m happy I did not buy anything less great, and just made sure I found a rear wheel. This was in the beginning of the pandemic too. I was prepping, buying extra food and a few boxes of gloves and masks, and then totally irrational as it felt, I started to order very exclusive bike parts from all around the world, not knowing what would get stranded where. I am happy for a friends advice regarding Shimano 105 and I upgraded to an Ultegra rear cassette this week (after this vid). The shifters for 105 and flat handlebars were NOT all over the place either. I experiences small sites had been stockpiling them but I managed to duck the most hefty pricings. I took the complete brake system from the Nishiki (sorryyyy I will get you new parts later!!) but had to buy a longer hydraulic tubing for the front.
Onn the flat I am leaving e-bikes behind Ieven with my five year old in the front eeeasily.. And when I do that I have 6 to 8 gears left and I can just keep going faster (but I rarely do when she is with me since I actually had a severe crash when she was not with me and a strap from a bag came into the front wheel and I I landed on my teeth).
I love to learn new stuff because looking back, the perception of the time spent building something always shrinks and finally does not matter. In the front I have mounted a Britax car child seat leaning against a sturdy plastic box. I usually unmount the top part of the seat and I strap it down flat when she is not going with me so the airflow gets better. If I go alone longer and/or need the space I can remove both the box and the rest of the seat. The ISO fix fastenings meets two roof work safety D-rings attached to a wooden broom shaft (yes makeshift but I´m not supposed to crash with her. I´m supposed to ride like I have a child in the front).
I fitted new parts or got what I had: New main bearing, new crank, new front and rear derailleurs, wires, pedals (from my previous bike), DISC BREAK READY front BMX rim (from wheels on - Omniums own were sold out too), a sleek 20" kids front tyre from a hardware store that is wider than it has to be but I sport a high pressure in it and i like the profile of it. I am happy to have grabbed these rims in the midst of the pandemic. Stem and handlebar from previous bike. Seat post was in a wider dimension so had to be bought.
My city is a bike slaughter house at night so the Omniumcargo Min-Max was the PERFECT frame for me as it FITS IN MY ELEVATOR, looks good, is built lightweight and yes I can go on and on about it´s benefits such as I can even carry it in stairs, car seat and all. When she falls into sleep on our way home I can leave her on the bike standing on the center stand while I cook for us. When sleeping she refuses to get lifted out of the Britax. Being a seller on auction sites I often use it for parcels too. Commuting is also my main source of physical workout.
I know I am biking a bit stupidly in this clip. I was fiddling with the camera and pretty much lost my focus. But I know the city inside out, having been a taxi driver here for years (10), and I have been a motorcycle driver in the Swedish army riding two wheels in deep snow, ice, ice water, mud, taking turns leaning on one foot on the ground in 100km/h using the bike as a spraying rudder so I am on my turf. I am not claiming this clip is anything extreme. It´s just me commuting.
I recently lost teeth and if I have had no insurance it would have costed twice the bike. That is why I now wear a full face helmet. I don´t think I could ever convince the insurance company a second time. Actually as I write this I´m not even sure I will get everything back.
