when mixing was art and not this perfect synchronized shit you hear today. i loved it when you could hear some little mistakes and then they become perfect again. that is part of deejaying and the actual challenge of mixing!!
The Wizard! Jeff Mills is one of my all time favorites... it's been ages since I've seen him... favorites back in the day were probably at the Roma Hall in Detroit and one night at Stammheim. And at Sickness/Recovery. I remember his Liquid Room CD came out around the same time as Richie's Mixmag CD... both were great, but Jeff's sounded more immediate because they left all the mistakes. You know he's not faking the funk.
I used to be from Detroit, and when you live there, it's hard to believe such talents like Jeff Mills ever existed there. Sure there's the underground scene, and house is starting to spur up....but if you don't know where it's at, you won't find it. That's why many electronic DJ's left.
awesome use of decks ,,lovely tracks ,, Jeff rocks anyplace,, people that understand and love music know that is not about the best ,,, is about the love u put when u do it ...
All these are his own productions too, which makes it doubly good. I feel lucky to have seen him in Minneapolis just a few years ago. I had this video but I'm pretty sure my roommate jacked it. Thanks for the upload!
i agree , he is a great DJ and is in my top list for a great mix and night out, his mixing is amazing rough and ready, we love it, this is not a negative thing saying he makes mistakes i have watched him throw a record out of the booth when it wasnt right for the mix, a great dj furiously good.
One of the best DJs ever this guy - has been for a long time too - used to see him at Lost in London - he would only play tracks for about 60 seconds before bringing in something new - very good!
legend. Seen him place 2 times, once in the Hague about 6 years ago and the other in Amsterdam about 4 years ago. 2 of the best parties I've been too..
People don't forget,Mr.Mills has pulled off more stunners than anyone else in techno, and yet has always maintained a most public profile. We know this music to be pure and awesomely funky.
This is actually the best mix I've seen by Mills. In the last 12 years every mixtape I have had of his was total shoes in the dryer. His music has always been genius though. I own most of his records and it isn't because of how he dj's.
how good is jeff! mills! awsome! this has to be my favourite video on you tube. with regards to the comments posted by 'iluvtechnomusic'.....jeff mills is legendary! ok, some of his mix sounds a wee bit out, but a quality dj can always pull it back and continue to go with the flow, which he does with ease. his control over the mixer is second to none.
Heard him a few times we used to call him double beat master!! Even if the beat was out still sounded shit hot!! He perfected the double beat..... Long live yet orbit!!
@machinewave You said everything, but i would just add this:And one of the most brilliant minds to appear in the music of the 20th century. If anyone disputes this then they have not heard him live. AMEN!
You've also got to remember that these tracks, and probably this mix as well is several years old. And I can't speak for what they do or don't like in Detroit, but I've always liked the use of double copies of records to create different drum patterns, drum rolls, etc. It can be quite effective in changing the song without changing the sounds. Just an old dj trick that has hung around over the years. Lots of dj's do it.
Jeff is the man. A pioneer of this flavor. Respect to him and other masters in their Particular electronic fields - Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Richie Hawtin, Aphex Twin, DJ Krush, Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, DJ Muggs, Roni Size, Skream and Dubstep, Nine,Throbbing Gristle, Goldie, The Prodigy, Portishead, AllFlaws

the Wizard..................................................THE MASTER
Most djs today do the simple task of playing a song the WHOLE way through and cueing it up in their headphones. Jeff Mills is mixing on the fly, so it isn't going to sound as polished as some dj that takes the EASY way out. This is MY KIND of mixing. This is REAL mixing.
All I can say is LEGEND, watched him up a 5hr set @ Atomic Jam wit 5 decks an 808 an a 909 fookin mental oh to get hold dat set was a monster nite!!!!!!!!!!
jeff mills is not just about mixing beats in his technosets. neither is it all about making good techno for dancing on party's. this man is an artist. it's not easy to make good MUSICAL music, and certainly not for a techno-dj. but this man has really cracked it. he might be the wizzard because he's genial at mixing beats, but he's even more a wizzard to me because he knows how to make real music out of techno beats...he is a god on his territory!
Un natural talent alien like re- alpha centuri ect. he is a genius-in his seminal mix live in Tokyo and at other times you hear the mix slipping away but he always grabs it just in time-class act all the way
It is good that there are out there all those mega giga commercial stadium DJs. More place on the dance floor for all of use who appreciate real techno sound. Just pay attention tho his miraculous hands while mixing and touching knobs.
its all about the rhythm and the energy, he treats each record more like loops that way he can create his own build ups and breakdowns-granted its not for evryone,he mixes very fast often with 2 records playing at anyone time so you are constantly getting variety in the rhythm (its all in the little rythmic details, think of it as an alien tribal drumming party ) : )
ofcoz, its talent that moves the music with whatever tools you use for it, you can do it good... but oldskool tools and sounds mixed with talent are sentimental to me, my mind grew on it and till its dead it will be a part of it. 90` were very special times for every kind of music. its potential is neverending and since we got all music kinds allready made... there is only a mixture of some existing possible.. btw 2010-2020 could be a nice time to come back to the oldskool.
I saw him DJ at Pure in Edinburgh. I think it was 1992. He was astonishing then - and he looked the part. Nobody looks better behind the decks than he does. He still looks the part Terminator X looks pretty special, admittedly.
What's up Wizare, this is D.J Doctor P-H-D Hump's brother it's go to see you still got it going, you and Jazzy Jaff are the only two D.J's I like to see in action, talk to you soon Keep it onthe one.
This is proper mixing. Respect. Tiesto can't mix like that. This is skill. Though Tiesto has produced rememberable anthems. They are both different. But Tiesto ain't got skill like that. So u cant compare.
Not the tightest set i've ever seen, but that's what i like about jeff. he takes risks and keeps the energy flowing always, and doesn't get frazzeled by the little mess ups.
Jeff mills is a techno robot. Designed in Germany, built in Detroit, customized in japan.
jaah in90 s

when mixing was art and not this perfect synchronized shit you hear today. i loved it when you could hear some little mistakes and then they become perfect again. that is part of deejaying and the actual challenge of mixing!!
Spot on!
selecting tracks is the real challenge of DJing
damn what a challenge...please dont select to hard :-D
buahahahahahahaah
So True bro ! Millsart = perfection anyway :)
The best techno DJ. Period!
What amazes me isn't that he screws up, but he corrects his screwups so fast. Thats what makes a good dj.
no wasted movements. everything is quick and calculated, and executed to perfection
....absolutely incredible DJing

Jeff Mills is like a sculptor. The desks are his chisels, the sound waves are his mountains. Massive respect

Awesome!! Jeff Mills music always inspires me.

Jeff Mills = GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODLIKE!!!!
Thing I love about Jeff is his styleis so raw. You can hear everything he does - it's perfect imperfect mixing.;
He can mix three tunes together competently and his tune selection is unbelievable.
Yes, that makes him one of the best DJs i've ever seen.
i agree , he is a great DJ and is in my top list for a great mix and night out,

This is actually the best mix I've seen by Mills. In the last 12 years every mixtape I have had of his was total shoes in the dryer.
His music has always been genius though.
I own most of his records and it isn't because of how he dj's.
This is truly art. Not just the performance itself - which is amazing - but the music. It's just so ... intelligent...
This man is a living legend...real old school techno...not the comercial "techno" from the "great Carl Cox" ...real techno from Detroit!!
yesterday jeff have played in my city, club to club in turin,it was fuckin amazing, never heard anything like that before
That means a lot coming from someone who has one song in their playlist... Sweet Sensation
He is definately one of the best DJs AND Producers! He's a DJ for about 22 years now and released his first record in '89 or so
@crokimma TECHNO never Died.....just sat back and waited to bite all the stragglers yet again...respect man..!!!
The way He acts is an art itself.
how good is jeff! mills! awsome! this has to be my favourite video on you tube. with regards to the comments posted by 'iluvtechnomusic'.....jeff mills is legendary! ok, some of his mix sounds a wee bit out, but a quality dj can always pull it back and continue to go with the flow, which he does with ease. his control over the mixer is second to none.
and here is the champion of the world!
we can watch here a really magic work
absolutely right. Mr Mills is one of the few djs that played from 3 decks in his unique, wicked style - true masterpiece
Heard him a few times we used to call him double beat master!! Even if the beat was out still sounded shit hot!! He perfected the double beat.....
Long live yet orbit!!
He makes it an art of slightly imperfect mixing that sounds perfect.
