Greetings from India. A nice journey. Brings back memories from the time I used to visit Chicago. Twice took the Metra train on two trips to Chicago, from Barrington to Chicago Union station. Took an hour exactly on the train.👍👍
I'm a freight conductor for UP, soon I'll be collecting tickets from you on that train. A lot of people don't know that those conductors and engineers are UP employees at the Ogilvie transportation center. We're contracted by Metra.
Cool! That is something a lot of people don't know, that is true (me being one of them lol). I did had the feeling though that most of the crew that operate the trains on the UP lines were from UP itself, with them being either conductors, or engineers. Guess we'll run into each other on a train someday ;)
@@_Matthew_D From the 'engineers' cab, that is basically impossible unless you are a corp. train film maker.... While I won't say its prohibited, the problem is, they kept the front car off to the public on most of the lines, so its impossible to get a cab ride from the front door in anymore.

The Original GTR Grand Truck Railway was also run on the opposite side and I believe some railroads had the unique guage of 5'6" instead of the standard 4'8.5" Today almost all of North America's railroads especially Canada and the United States are very well intergraded especially for Freight operations. Chicago is the Biggest Hub of operations and the Biggest Bottleneck of freight trains.
Thanks for the video!! Allowed me to revisit my past trips to work in downtown Chicago from 1978 to 1989, but only a few days every week as I was a field rep. The timetable I have for this Northwest Line, dated April 1, 1977, shows the fare to Chicago from Harvard was $2.65 one way and a monthly pass cost $71.55 then. My trip was limited to Arlington Park and I took the express most of the time. My nephew currently rides in from Crystal Lake 5 days a week. I could never do that. UP apparently continued the Northwestern's British Right of Way (Drive on the left) shown in this video. A few US Railroads did that. It is a lesson to never turn your back on a railroad line for thinking they all follow US Rules of the Road---they don't.
Nice lol. Harvard to Chicago is a long trip. I mean really long. When I was making I was expecting it to be close to 2.5 hours long, but it seems things was smooth so I'm glad it ended up being 1.5 hours long. Glad you enjoy it
@@NBVideosPresents Harvard is now north end of service. They used to run all the way to Lake Geneva (and through it) to Walworth, Wisconsin, about another 30-35 miles. And some did the commute t o Chicago every day.

Unfortunately, seven of the kids on the bus were killed. The bus was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Algonquin Road and Northwest Highway. The driver was unaware that the back of the bus was overhanging the track.
Ah, that from my view wasn't the smartest move to make, especially when there was an oncoming train. I'm going to guess that the kids tried to tell the driver (or maybe not) that the bus was over the tracks and the driver didn't believe or didn't had any room to move forward. Still sad to hear overall
Is this the longest Metra route or the Milwaukee Line that runs along Lake Michigan? I'm just curious? I took the Harvard line once for a birthday. From Chicago to Harvard. Then back to Chicago. I would like to ride the Milwaukee line along Lake Michigan. Or Amtrak? I ride the Metra Electric District Line.
Yes, this is the longest route Metra has, and what makes it more longer are from the station stops the trains make, as they stop at all the stations basically. I took the Milwaukee line, and while it's shorter, you see more trains than the Harvard line.

Only the UP trains runs on the left side ;) Reason behind it was from the Chicago and Northwestern days where they ran left handed so UP continued with the tradition of left hand operations rather than switching it over to the right hand operations (at least for the Chicago area and the Geneva Sub).
If I'm understanding this correctly, its a combonation of both Federal Railroad Administration and the community. Once the community sends enough complaints in, then the Federal Railroad Administration will establish the quiet zones.

Well, I'm not sure if you know how Metra works, but this was made from the connection door that other cars are connected to. The actual cab unit is above me, but it does look like it was made from the cab itself. I'll try to make time to watch your cab videos when its up
I'm only 23 minutes in so far, but how fast is this train travelling? Over here in GB we don't have many long straight lines like this, but where we do we tend to tear along them at somewhere between 90 and 110 mph. Are your trains just so big and long, they need engines with muscle rather than speed?
I would say at most 55mph in some areas. No, I won't say the the reason for slow moving trains. The main reason is, by the time the train reaches the max speed, it'll need to start slowing down because it's approaching the station, and most are only a few miles apart (since it is a commuter train). As for freight, they can go up to 60mph, but the average is 55mph.
I've reached journey's end! As the train's pulling into the station I noticed a CTA pulling along in the background and I don't know why this thought struck me at that moment. The CTA keeps to the right, but this one is on the left track all the way. Do all the long distance 'heritage' lines still run on the left?
@@larrywharf1583 congrats at making it to the end! Hmm, I don't think I understand the CTA part, but for most of their system,they are right handed (aka right track) for their routes. As for the can ride, not all are left track, just certain ones. In this video, UP purchased the CNW railway, which operated on the left track, and instead of re-signaling the ex-CNW tracks, they just left it and operate as-is. Hopefully it'll answer your question, or at least give you an idea of the setup.
@@iemv8900 If it wasn't for emergency purposes, the engineer can get in trouble for railroad policy, or with the law depending on how strict they are for blowing the horn.
@@NBVideosPresents they can sound the horn when there is a meet going on at a crossing to warn the engineer on the other train they are not dimming there headlights because there is a crossing! They also can blow at at railfanners for fun if they want to!

No wonder Metra has so many accidents. DING DING DING "Honey whats that dinging sound?" SMASH. use a whistle so a car can hear you. I always called Metra the Ding a ling railway cuz all their trains do is ding ding ding. you might as well just remove the horns from the engines because apparently the engineer doesn't know how to press the button or follow FRA regulations. I don't even understand how people on the Electric line manage not to go nuts. all you hear is the damn bell for over an hour. I was actually reading that Northwestern Railway was the only backwards railway in the US. All their signals are on set for left track running, not right. Apparently it was to expensive to change sides so they just kept it.
UPDATE - Metra recently no longer allows recording from the front / end of the train.

the UP-N line goes to kenosha, Wi. but a good number of the trains terminate in waukegan, Il, a few stops back.
It does feel like you're in Wisconsin. The Union Pacific West Line has a little bit of a country feel to it as well.

The left-hand running gives this away as ex-CNW trackage. Nice to see the UP hasn't converted it over to conventional right main running yet.
I don't think they will anytime soon since it'll be costly with the signals and all of the other track things (mostly signals)
