    Great footage well done . Anyone think like me , the NZ boats out riggers seem to make a lot less splash/spray than other boats ?.

      Studying all the hull designs, it looks to me that the Kiwi's & the Brit's both designed the bottom of the hull to ride the ground effect air which will carry more of the total weight allowing the wet wings to run with less angle of attack. The Brit boat looks more forgiving to pilot error but I don't see how it can be as fast due to that double step fat butt.

      @olivertwisstkostanza3615 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are hydrofoils. Most the hull is above water at those speeds

    • @alanshearing7515
      @alanshearing7515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did mean spray from the hydrofoils, so if they are bing run with less angle of attack equals more efficient?. my understanding of the British boat is more compressed air (double bubble at rear means more lift ) so quicker up on the plane , but faster ? Time will tell .

      @@nzsaltflatsracer8054 that does seem to be the case but why the 'hard chine' design on the INEOS keelson and that 'bustle' I don't for one understand. I can only surmise it's the Mercedes design part of the teams input and where any similarities seem to end. ETNZ seems to have a one step move out of the water whereas INEOS has two steps.

      @@DaveandGinny972 My aerodynamic knowledge isn't around sail boats & hydrofoils, it's around race cars, hydroplanes & aircraft so my terminology won't be correct as in hydrofoil - wet wing but I'm sure you guys understand what I'm talking about. Less angle of attack = less drag & when it gets close to the surface it will produce less roostertail. The bustle on the Pomie boat is giving a greater ground effect pressure (lift) in two stages as the hull gets closer to the water but that comes at the cost of more aerodynamic drag even when in full flight. The two approaches are very similar but the Poms appeared to want some insurance against pilot error. It's certainly going to be interesting to see them go head to head.

    Team Nz. This baby is moving along nicely, this is the flying boat the challengers have to beat for the Americas cup. Some concern in the challengers camps. This boat is tunning up, lifting the grade to formula 1 on water.

      Obviously you're not going to find anything about teams openly admitting whether or not they have concerns regarding their boat and the defenders lmaoo
      That'll be ludicrous. Might as well head home if that's the case...

    The freeboard on Te Rehutai is very high. It will take a lot of waves for the water spray to go over it. You can compare the freeboards with Luna Rossa at 0:0.11.

    Parallax its a pain isn’t it? ;-)
    Seeing how little of these boats are actually in the water, once they are flying, I’m not expecting to see much differential in speeds. So where one design may get a significant advantage over another boat is how fast they can get up on, and stay on, those foils...& how much the boat slows down if/when the hull touches the water surface. All crews will be at the top of their game in terms of driving the boats, but maybe strategy on the race course might give one an edge over competition. Don’t know, just thinking out loud here. That NZ boat does look rapid though, they all do in the right conditions though.

    • @izziebon

      There is still plenty of scope for variation in skills and speed; it’s a balance between drag and sail setting.

    In viewing the videos of the new boats it seems Luna Rosa is having difficulty in holding a consistent ride height... where the New Zealanders are holding a very consistent height out of the water... also seems the race boats are all now foiling just above the water's surface where the initial boats rode hight our of the water.

      They should be better in many ways with their boat since they've been on the water a lot longer than the kiwis have with their boat 2.
