I am intrigued to see how these results go, as well as seeing how you react to the Apple Peanuts specials given the fact that you've never seen them before. I've heard some people say that the new specials are supposedly not cynical enough compared to the old ones, which... seems like quite an odd critique to have, but I'm interested to hear your perspective.
True, this "items floating out of the shopping basket" is literally the Peanuts version of the boulder supposedly smashing Coyote, but it just lands beside him, with the unfitting horrendous Bill Lava music cue played twice in a row. Like a famous Disney villain once said : "Oooooh boy, oh boy, oh boy..."
Congratulations on this ambitious installment to the series. You actually helped me rethink my opinion on Why Charlie Brown, Why? and even It’s The Pied Piper, Charlie Brown to an extent and I’m super excited to see where the next part will go.
36:22 this actually made me laugh 😂 I think this might be the best video of this series so far, anyway, I think peanuts works best in hand drawn/cel animation, since it gives more of a nostalgic and calm vibe to it, which is more what most specials are going for, the computer anination in some later specials, even if smooth, don't give me that same vibe that the older cel animated ones give, at least in my opinion, great video!
Also two more bad things to note about It Was My Best Birthday Ever, Charlie Brown. 1. It's never established who the party at the beginning was for. 2. Charlie Brown asked Sally how the was despite him being there.
@@thehickcriticyeah,as the first computer animated project,I was expecting a level up to the France peanuts series,I was sorely disappointed. Plus,I feel that nothing is interesting about it was my best birthday,it’s just a made for video tape peanuts special that’s going to put you to sleep rather than make you excited.I am really struggling to believe Charles Schulz and Bill Melendez made this, because they made a Charlie Brown Christmas 32 years prior when It was my best birthday when was released, with hand made animation, and a £76,000 budget, which they went £20,000 dollars over, and numerous animation errors.
By the '90s, it seemed like the "Peanuts" animated specials were struggling to justify their continuation, which would explain the more spread out release dates. American animation was experiencing a renaissance thanks to Disney, Nickelodeon, and later Cartoon Network. So what was once a bright spot during the industry's bronze age now looked tired and uninteresting. That said, I'm interested to check out a couple of these. It's impressive that the now elderly staff could still manage to churn out a gem or two. Similar to how Bob McKimson still kept trying to make "Looney Tunes" work in the '60s (He certainly seemed more passionate than Friz Freleng and his derivative Speedy & Sylvester cartoons by then). Another great part, perhaps even a mild improvement over the already great last one. 👍
Thank you! Yeah that's a great way to put it... this era is kind of a mix between them trying to reach their glory days, but also trying to stay relevant, and the results can be great at best, or downright bad at worst. It was a fascinating group of specials to say the least.
Loved the video! as per usual, did a good job going over everything. And love the voting idea, as some of your views are pretty different from mine. Also where did you hear about Jill Shultz having trouble with the director? Love that special even if largely because of what a mess it is, so when I did my own research on it I never came across that info. thanks!, and great video.
The initial information I came across was on TV Tropes, which seemed to be taken, at least in part, from a 2018 book called "Charles Schulz Cartoonist and Writer" by Michael A. Schuman.
After the Christmas sequel the new specials aired either on NBC ABC Fox or went directly to home video until Apple took over the rights to show the newer specials and repeats of some past specials. I think CBS was ordered not to air anymore new specials after It's Christmastime Again so you had the Super Bowl one on NBC, the Valentines sequel onwards to Happiness is A Warm Blanket air on ABC with that one to air on Fox. Not counting the tribute specials that CBS aired before the rights was moved to ABC.
I remember that Lila tells snoopy that the banning of dogs in her building was a new rule just implemented by the landlord so its possible that having a dog there was not an issue when she first adopted him
I'm surprised you didn't bring up the fact that the Super Bowl special is the first to give many of the main characters a last name- including Franklin being given the last name Armstrong, named after Robb Armstrong, who later co-wrote the Apple TV Frankin special where the last name still remained.
I thought about it, but the review was long enough already and it didn't really have to do with the quality of special, so I decided to leave it out. I might bring it up in my "Welcome Home Franklin," review, but we'll see.
Fun fact the voice actor of Charlie Brown in A Charlie Brown Valentine later voiced Lars the polar bear in the animated film The Little Polar Bear and Wilbur in Meet the Robinsons
The thing you asked about the Physician’s scale in someone bathroom being a real thing. Yes it is. My great aunt had one in hers before she passed almost a decade ago. I never realized it wasn’t common. I mean she was the only one in my family that had one but still.
I still don't have any memory of watching the second Christmas special, but now that I'm more familiar with it I can honestly say I wish that one got more attention where I live. I legitimately got sick of the original.
I'm really enjoying this retrospective! I'll admit that I have a nostalgic love for "Super Bowl" because we taped it off its original airing back in '94, but now that I've seen it in the harsh light of day? You're right, it has a lot of problems. I'm very curious about the final part. We're reaching the time when I stopped keeping with Peanuts specials. Most of the others I watched through syndication in my childhood. (PS - The only other fairy tale adaptation I can recall was an episode of the Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show where Snoopy and Woodstock act out a version of Jack and the Beanstalk.)
Don't think I can really contribute to the rankings since I haven't really seen a lot of these specials. But I am VERY much looking forward to the final batch of reviews.

When it comes to Snoopy come home the first and second part of the story take place 4 years apart not one this makes it easier to understand the parking garage but I still would love to know what happened to spike and why the heck Lila's parents didn't check that they could have a dog
I will now share with you the origin story of why Spike lives in the desert. "Years ago when I was young, I was out walking with some people. Suddenly, a rabbit ran across in front of us! 'Get him!' shouted the people! Even though I didn't want to, I darted after the rabbit! I wouldn't have known what to do even if I had caught him. Then it happened! The rabbit ran into the road, and was hit by a car! I was stunned! Why did I do it?! Oh, how I hated myself! And how I hated those people who shouted, 'Get him!'. So I came out here to the desert where I couldn't hurt anything again." (Peanuts - September 18, 1994)
Seems the Birthday special was animated by a US studio called Rick Reinart Productions, they also did the Eeyore Winnie the Pooh featurette in 1983, their style usually do not fit beloved properties

It's very bad to me and is honestly kind of a tie between this and Someday You'll Find Her as the worst but I think it's my second least favorite, followed by Best Birthday Ever in 3rd, both direct to video specials are next to each other in my bottom 5/10, because it offers nothing special whatsoever and is so sluggish and annoying to sit through since I only watched it once, and i'll never again! At least Birthday had some (keyword some) at best decent moments which isn't that good, but there's nothing to like/enjoy with Pied Piper and I wish you ranked it at like a 2 or 3 because it's THAT terrible for me and is not watchable at all!!! Your Next Big Rating For The Channel Should Be Direct To Video VeggieTales Episodes There Are 46 Episodes 47 If You Count The Wonderful World Of Autotainment 49 If You Count The Movies And 50 If You Count The Netflix Show And 51 If You Count The VeggieTales Shows And If You Do Those As Well You Would Have 50 If You Leave One Out It Would Be A Good Suggestion
I filled out the Form: The movies were unfortunately absent. This is my Best list: Charlie Brown Christmas ( Its cute and one of the few Christmas specials to discuss Christianity), snoopy presents for Auld Lang Syne ( I am a huge Lucy stan so I love it. It was very sweet.) Great Pumpkin ( Its cute and hilarious), Flashbeagel, The songs are great and its funny, It's Magic Charlie Brown: It's one of the funniest specials. Snoopy Come Home ( It is a masterpice. It was sad and funny) Race For Your Life Charlie Brown ( The child endangerment is absolutely hilarious. I like how they almost died in some parts) The Peanuts Movie( It got me hooked on the franchise. Its funny and the animation is beautiful. Snoopy the Musical ( I love the songs) Good Man Charlie Brown ( I love the songs) It's an Adventure ( Its PeanWorst: A Boy Named Charlie Brown. That should have been 20 minutes instead of a whole movie. That one sucked. Girl in the Red Truck for Obvious reasons, The Super Bowl One for obvious reasons. It would have been passable if they didn't recycle animation.
If A Boy Named Charlie Brown was just 20 minutes, it wouldn't have the impact it has with the message and the absolutely wonderful soundtrack it has with Rod McKuen's music that just hits me inside and it moves the feeling of the movie very well and having it be slower and longer helps us really connect and sympathize with Charlie Brown. It would just feel too rushed or lackluster to me if it was just a special, I think it's perfect as a feature film and I know there's obviously some scenes that are just are probably just there for the run time, but they're pretty eye catching and pretty well animated for Peanuts standards, that scene with Schroder playing Beethoven is like a cheaper version of Fantasia, it's that beautiful! The message with Charlie Brown that Linus tells him is so simple, but absolutely affective, and I relate to that really well and it's something that connects me with this film and it's my favorite piece of Peanuts media ever!!! better than the other movies by far and I feel like people need to chill with it because Peanuts has done ALOT worse with Peanuts and having dragged out scenes and alot of issues, i'm looking at you Race for Your Life ;( that movie actually sucked!
