in one game I was play we had a barbarian, a retribution paladin, a healer druid, and a rogue ranger hybrid and what we did while fighting an adult red dragon was the barbarian grappled it to the ground the paladin punished the dragon with radiant damage for hurting the barbarian while the rogue ranger hid in a corner pelting arrows at the dragon while invisible and the druid healed when necessary and had a bunch of animal summons doing damage and grappling the dragon as well so the dragon literally couldn't escape the grapples was getting filled with arrows by the rogue, smited by the paladin, having several animals maw it, a druid casting healing spells undoing all of the damage it does while squeezing in some damage spells and a barbarian smacking it in the face while pinning it to the ground with one had

My favorite barbarian race is actually Forest Gnome. People think I'm crazy because it doesn't have any strength boost and has Intelligence as the primary stat boost, but they are missing an important fact: The Forest gnome weighs between 30 to 40 lbs. This allows my companions to use my gnome as a portable munitions of blood curdling rage, all the while being assisted by a relentless assault of small forest creatures like squirrels, rabbits, and various highly aggressive birds.

I made a Halfling Totem of the Bear Barbarian (the icon I have is a drawing of her). Her name is (maybe "was" after Monday. We're in the final battle of Tomb of Annihilation) Cordie and she's super nice and her battleaxe is called Kindness. She took on a Negaloth(?) by herself completely naked.
Update: Cordie survived, she has Moa's Staff and is now home, married to a Drow Wizard and happy.

Ive only played one barbarian and he was a Goliath. I had more fun with that character than any other and I wrecked Strahd.
Mechanically the Half Orc seemed the best choice. The extra critical die on top of your brutal critical in addition to rolling with advantage on nearly every attack is amazing.

    • @trequor
      @trequor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Im currently playing Goliath BardBEARian grappler and it's amazing. The combat control is just so much fun. The DM lets me use gravity to hurt things (the goliath has a 12ft reach and an 8ft vertical jump at Str20, so 12+8=20ft fall for the bad guy and that's 2d6 damage). It's like a supremely overcomplicated, but way cooler greatsword

    • @TheOldKevin
      @TheOldKevin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@trequor Very nice. We found the sunsword in Strahd and my DM let me find a Sun Great Axe instead of a long sword.
I may have also ran across a Helm of Brilliance in our adventures as well and for about 3 or 4 battles I was a Barbarian casting fireball and wall of fire. It was hilarious.
The game died before we got to fight the Ancient Green Dragon and the Demi-Gorgon. We met both. My barbarian had a Hulk in Ragnarok moment and wanted to fight them when we met them at level 12.
      Have fun with your campaign.

I am banned from playing my barbarian ever again. Her name was Bindi Stomper, and she is/was a halfling barbarian. Not the greatest strength necessarily -- only a 14 -- but DAMN did that halfling luck save my tush on many an occasion. My cousin spent numerous sessions just outright trying to kill her and never succeeded, even when I went bare-knuckle with a grizzly bear, and he finally got so tired of the gung-ho attitude I gave her he just banned her (though to be fair he's used to me typically playing "that character what solves all the clues and has all the skills to do the things," and was rather put out when, playing her, the answer to everything was "ignore anything I can't hit with my axe and kick open the next door.")

@@snowman9631 It's honestly fine :) She's one of several characters I've made, both as playables and NPCs, that make my cousin(s) groan whenever they come up. Like my recurring tinker gnome NPC Snobbish (who's built as a specialist wizard with no damage-dealing capability at all,) who always manages to get them wrangled up into trouble in one way or another.
We've been a relatively solid DnD group for years: having one character I'm banned from using (who was initially thrown together for a one-shot to begin with) isn't much of a problem :)

I made one of these for the campaign I'm about to start. It's a 3 player campaign with a Rogue (Mastermind) and Artificer (Artillerist) and me the Ancestral Guardian Barb. We all start at LVL 1 and did a modified roll for stats. I planned on playing him like a pinball just bouncing around between enemies and keeping them off the ranged players with the racial traits. However I rolled bad on STR with a 13 total. So I'm trying to nix the idea of playing him like that and just going straight tank. I'm just a little sad that now his traits are gonna be useless, I should've picked a half-orc :/

In Defense of the Half-Elf they've got some interesting variant rules. Half-Drow allows to cast a few neat spells and the other options ain't too bad either: Half-Wood Elf's Fleet of foot may occasionally be useful on an already mobile class, Aquatic Elf's swimming speed might come in hand in certain campaigns or if you're building the Moana god, Half-Moon/Sun can get you a free Wizard cantrip. You do pay a toll with your extra skills but the option's availability is nice to have. Incidentally Paladins are easy to multiclass into since you've got +2 Cha. There's also a trick called Fighter 8 aka 3 ASI's. Imho Fighter 8/BB 3 isn't that much weaker compared to a Fighter 11, especially if reaching the capstone is unlikely anyway.

You might not think so at first, but the Tortle works very well. The natural armor allows you to dump DEX without much issue. I am using one in my campaign with a Sentinel Shield and Warhammer. I also went Path of the Totem (Bear) so he’s resistant to damn near all damage types. I’ve been running rough-shot through most battles. 18 10 14 12 12 12

Toss over statues, throw tables, tear down pillars and make entire portions of buildings collapse.
If such high strength hasn't have any combat applications, than your DM needs to start thinking creatively and outside the box of, make attack roll, cast spell,...

I'd like to make an argument for one of my all time favorite races, the goblin. The stats aren't optimal, for sure; only +1 to Con and +2 to Dex, but Dex is not useless for Barbarians and DexBarb builds do exist. You also get Fury of the Small to add a little extra damage to your hits, and a free Disengage lets you easily manuever around the battlefield in the midst of a melee. You do miss out on a lot of the big heavy weapons, so I would not argue with anyone that the weaknesses might outstrip the strengths, but it's worth it to try at least once just to make your Fury of the Small a TRUE FURY.

Currently Eagle/Bear, and though the lack of the supreme Bear as first totem hurts, nothing beats the 150 movespeed per turn. I picked Ancestral Spirit at the time due to some Oni messing with ghosts, but she was an ex-Gladiator in the style of Wrestlers, born to a tough family, always found herself naturally super strong, and liked to go around hitting things with her Maul. But on top of that, she had surprising utility through her spells, we used Darkness to enhance our stealth prowess near a camp of Frost Trolls once.

I'm planning to try to get a glaive (not sure if you get to pick your starting weapon or not) so I can get great weapon AND Polearm specialization. My goal is to be able to go super tank mode (I don't know the other players classes yet), so I was gonna do Totem warrior with the bear. I don't know if I'd be able to use the ancestor path with the materials my DM is using, cuz I heard that's the best for tanking. My wife is gonna play a half-elf bard.
Any other big stuff I'm missing? Any tips for a first timer?

I love the flavor of a Scourge Aasimar Barbarian Zealot and want to run one soon.
Having an angelic guide only speak to you while raging or screaming in celestial as your eyes are clouded seeing only friend and foe as a angel or fiend.
Keeping your rage no matter what happens by taking a little radiant damage each turn so you can still or not attack as your form can't contain just how radiant you are, it's beautiful.

so one thing I always look for in my barbarian is the powerful build trait because powerful build makes grappling barbarians absolute units to the point where when my GM was giving us boons I specifically asked for the powerful build trait and I put an adult red dragons head in the dirt while the rest of the party just stood around it and pelted it with damage and that is why when it comes to fighting a boss monster their is no better tank then a barbarian

Surprised lizardfolk didn't get more attention in this. Feeding frenzy, natural armor, +2 Ac, and a 1d6 bite for an unarmed attack is prettu great. Also a barbarian that can move well in water is pretty huge in my opinion.

I kinda like the character flavor you get from a Dragonborn Barbarian using the Zealot out of Zanathar's. It's a very interesting race on how far they go to worship either Tiamat or Bahamut depending on if they are good or evil.

The Barbarian class always throws me, probably because I was exposed to Everquest 1&2 before D&D (Which I didn't get into until 5e).
The Reason, Barbarians are a Race in EQ2, one of the Human Subraces (Humans, Barbarians, Erudites ) and the Calss of Barbarian is called the Berserker ;)
I understand the differences just something I have to keep reminding myself is all :D

While I dont think it is a good barb, it's good for freeing up your subclass in my opinion. Tiefling with the Infernal Constitution feat from Xanathars gets 3 resistances from some really common elements. You dont need to go Bear Totem if you use this Tiefling feat. The spells are not lost on you either. You can't use spells while raging, but if your dm makes you have many fights or breaks your rages, you have back up spells that can be very useful.
You can mix it with Storm Herald Barbarian to get a 4th resistance to Lightning. It's not a super common element, but if you are collecting resistances, it's an option.

Also you guys mentioned having some trouble making the flavor of a kalashtar barbarian work. Barbarian is one of my favorite classes, and I'm super interested in the kalashtar, but I'm super new to Eberron and I know so little about the lore and their setting-specific races. Can you elaborate on what makes it more complex, and maybe share some light on some of the ideas you mentioned having in the video?

Rip Headphone users at the start. I’m doing a campaign with a club with my friend and some aquatints and our Paladin is a very self centered person and tries to dictate everyone’s actions and even just attacks anyone or anything that moves including the party, he won’t attack me ( due to my AC or 22 at level 2) and I try to defend the party members as much as I can but he still tries. We are debating if we should kill off his character to maybe show him he is not as good as he thinks or the DM is even thinking about asking him to not come to a few sessions. I’m sorry for the novel I’m writing but we have 3 new players with us and we are trying to give them a good first time. sadly I was out of town when he decided to attack our CLERIC so he KNOCKED OUR CLERIC DOWN while the party was in a dungeon with undead and when I got back we had 2 new character sheets on the table. The wizard failed two medicine roles and the cleric died. So NO BODY likes this guy. he’s new to DnD and we thinks it’s because he has never played a game where everybody was working together but he has pushed it pretty far.

Bio Chill yeah... that guy needs to be sat down by the group and told he’s spoiling the fun. If you’ve already tried that, then he needs to not be a part of the group. He’s putting his own fun before the group and trying to bully other players.
Talk first, if that doesn’t work, show him the door. Killing the character might only make it worse, giving him something to hold against you. Just do it clean, warn him whats coming if it doesn’t stop, and then follow through if needed.
