  • The Portuguese influence on New York is a significant part of the city’s cultural history. Arriving in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Portuguese immigrants established vibrant communities in areas like SoHo and the Lower East Side. They contributed to the city’s economy, particularly in shipping and the restaurant industry, and introduced beloved culinary traditions through bakeries and cafes. Cultural institutions and events, such as the Church of St. Anthony of Padua and the annual Portuguese Day Parade, celebrate and preserve Portuguese heritage, showcasing their music, dance, and cuisine.

    My boy Joey! I knew him before you, Jeff. And at Chelsea Market, which is just a few blocks from where I grew up. Hope you did your part to encourage him to visit Madeira (I have). It was great to see his Pasteis featured on “Good Morning America” a few months ago. Isaac Mendes Seixas was my first cousin, six times removed - and he was a member of the Sephardic synagogue Shearith Israel on 70th Street and Central Park West, where our path to Madeira (and my Portuguese citizenship) began many years ago. Thank you for the tip about Macao Trading Company (especially the Coral) but next time try Leitao at 547 Hudson Street in Greenwich Village. Great Chicken Piri-Piri. Getting excited for our Aug. 15 move to “the Wood.” Forca Madeira!

      Alô!! Ahah small world hey, Joey was actually on his way to good morning America after us if I’m not mistaken, or it was the day before or something can’t remember. We did hear about Leitao, I just thought Macau made for better entertainment/curiosity. We actually had one or two more listed that we didn’t get to…
      Anyway yeah looking forward to meeting up when you arrive, send me an email so we can make it happen ;))
      See you soon!! 🤠

    Nice to hear about Joey Bats. I was born half way between Montalegre and Boticas, so I look forward to running into him there one day. As for Ludló, I went there a couple of years for the festas. I have plenty of family down there, Milford, Long Island, Bridgeport.

    Again, very awesome content. You deserve at least 100.000 followers more for the love and dedication you put in these documentaries (I think that term is more appropriate than just VLOG...). One question remains, though: How much was the Coral? Don't tell me it costs more than, say, eight?

    Btw, come to Frankfurt someday.. There is a town in a very rural part of Germany (about 45 minutes drive from here) where just over half of the population has Portuguese roots. But I think more from the mainland than from Madeira. Anyhow, could be interesting. Feel free to contact me if you guys are interested. :-)

      Good afternoon!
      You are right in saying that the Portuguese in Germany are from the mainland. France, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, PT immigrants are almost all from the North of Portugal, from the regions called MINHO and TRÁS-OS-MONTES. While Portuguese immigrants from the U.S, Canada, South Africa and Australia are almost all islanders, from the Azores and Madeira. Maybe because it is located in the middle of the Atlantic and is halfway there, I don´t know! 🙂

    • @Hittheroadmadeira
      @Hittheroadmadeira  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would love to come to Germany, maybe one day!! For now we are quite full of work, but who knows?! Let’s see 🙏

    • @Hittheroadmadeira
      @Hittheroadmadeira  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And yes Paulo I believe you are correct, I think maybe because there was ports on the islands, and the boats that stopped there went to these places such as US, Canada, South Africa and Venezuela as well ;)

      @@Hittheroadmadeira Yes of course, Venezuela, and so many Portuguese who live there. How could I forget with everything that's happening there now?

    13:50 Saint Antonio was born in Lisbon in the 12th century, but as he went to live in Italy and spent a long time there studying and practicing religion, the Italians unfairly began to say that he was an Italian from Pádua, but don't believe it if you hear an Italian say that it's a lie, he is Portuguese and is the most adored Saint in Portugal.
    Even today you can visit the place where he was born in Lisbon, near the Alfama neighborhood.

    Hey... Jeff / Andreas.. Did anywhere in Canada play any significant role ( in 1800's) to Portuguese global migration?. .Something maybe for your North American perspective piece. I think there's a big population in T. O..

    Unfortunately, not too many Portuguese in New York City. Those who are there are second and third generation Portuguese professionals. Most know little about their ancestral roots and culture.
