I saw BB live three times in my life. Your tone is real close. He had more gain than you think and rolled off the volume...great video. Good choice of player. I think your tone would work great for Wes Montgomery as well. Nice job.

I own a Sheraton identical to this. I love it. Heath Fogg, lead guitarist from Alabama Shakes plays one, as does Leon Bridges. Such a great, vintage, dark tone. The trick with them, as Rabea points out, is rolling the tone off and using the neck or middle settings. Emily Wolfe does the same. I've had mine set up with flat wounds.
BB King was born in Berclair, Mississippi and NOT Memphis, Tennesee. He primary guitars are a Fender Esquire, Gibson ES-5 and a Gibson ES-355. His liked the Fender Twin Reverb Tweed. But he also used a Lab Series L5 2×12" combo a lot. It had built-in compression and parametric equalization. His strings were Gibson 10-54. He used D'Andrea medium picks.
This video completely answers everything I wanted to know about the Sheraton! I want a 335 guitar with that epic 335 tone, and I was thinking of saving hard and getting a Gibson reissue, but if I can get that tone out of an epiphone I’d rather get that! THANK YOU!

I like this series. One of the things I take from it is that a quality amp makes more of a difference than an expensive guitar. Amazing how good some of the cheaper guitars sound through quality amps.

It seems like a lot of the critics below are expecting a "Become BB King" video as opposed to what it is, which is "Sound like BB King" Relax keyboard warriors and enjoy two guys helping people afford to sound like players they love!
BB King from what I can remember also played Gibson Lab Series solid state amps, he really has more of a jazz guitar tone just with more bite and again it really comes down to the way he played as well but great job on the tones!
@@angelojester: Yes, I purchased one of his Lab Series amps from his estate (an L5, 2x12 combo, to be precise). These were only made from the late '70's to the early '80's. They were made by a collaboration between Gibson and Moog, and are solid state. They weren't cheap (about $2500.00 in todays $). B once said that they were so hard to find, he'd buy one everytime he saw one. The settings on my amp are exactly as Mr. King left them.

BB used the Vibro-Verb and Vibro-King amps mainly, I thought I read somewhere that Gibson made his guitars mainly solid body. He was such a great player and a true blues man! I love the Plimsoul!
+Robert Budila It's pretty hard unless you go for a particular song at a particular live gig. He was always experimenting with gear, including studio gear, and tuning.
+Robert Budila Nice distorting amp, put it on just a nice break up, so not to high gain, then add a good tone bender (this is 'the secret'), you know sound quite a bit like Jimmy
BB King was known for playing exceptionally light strings, as low as 7's. He told Billy Gibbons he was "working too hard" when he saw him with huge strings during the SRV "heavier strings are better" era, so Gibbons got Dunlop to start pulling 7's and still plays them.
It's so much fun to watch such an incredibly skilled player struggling to tame his skills in order to stay more BB-esque :) Anyway, great video and a worthy tribute to the King! ;)

Best 'Sounds Like' videos you guys have done yet! One difference Lucille has, is that it only has the one F hole on the top(bass) bout. I read an interview in which B.B. King said why he liked it like that, but I forgot why.
I have a Sheraton (with natural finish) and this is a good approximation of his late-1960s/1970s tone (e.g., "The Thrill Is Gone"). If you listen to his records from earlier in the 1950s, though, he had a very dirty, raunchy sound, which he got from using a hollow body with dimed small-wattage octal tube or tweed-style amps. In the early-to-mid-1960s, he got his Live at The Regal-type tone with the semi-hollow 345 through a Super Reverb, which was much more trebly and biting than the tone aimed for here from the 1970s when he used a solid-state Lab Series L5 amp. (P.S. - I enjoy your playing, Rabea.)

From what I know he used a twin and Fender Tube amps, it wasn’t till late in his career he used solid state. I could be wrong, though I also know solid states weren’t popular back in the day.
As someone else pointed out B.B.King played Gibson Lab L5 amp, full transistor amps. You can pay a lot less with a good, trasparent and clean transistor amp cheaper than a Fender Pricenton, definetely.
Korn would be a fun one to do for tone (untouchables era) and certain stand out effects. Maybe Jack White to? Thin lizzy? Hell even Prince would be a GREAT one! Enjoy the vids guys.

I did miss the "wandering around the shop" segment but if you've changed filming locations I can see how that may not be as practical - plus, I'm sure it vastly increased the length of time it took to shoot and edit these. so sad i couldnt go to a BB show before he died... i was a medicine student, in brazil when he passed, and had no money to atend to the shows he made here =[ but still listen to him until today! hope to get more closer to his tone with this video im 2019!
I respect your efforts on the BB King tone. It's an exercise in beautiful simplicity. It's actually pretty difficult to play like the late great BB King. Beguiling actually. His touch on the instrument is all but impossible to mimic. But I enjoyed the tones!
To be accurate BB King was born and raised in the Itta Bena area of Mississippi in 1925 and started playing guitar at the age of six in 1931. Then at about the age of 17 in 1942 he hitchhiked to Memphis to pursue a career in playing the blues. So while he started recording the blues in Memphis Tennessee he is from and got his start in the great state of Mississippi.

My 1988 Sheraton (with the "Epiphone by Gibson" headstock) into a Laney VC15 does a pretty good impression. If only I could play as well as B.B. King (or Bea).
BB used a solid state amp .. no pedals .. and his signature tone is out of phase! Also I know Landon is another economic reality, but even 4 years ago, a Princeton was a pretty freakin' expensive amplifier. You could play BB on literally anything! The man's tone was super clean and dry. It was all in his masterful vibrato and phrasing.
A video I've ben wanting to see would be how to sound like chuck berry! I've been trying to replicate that classic 50s-60s era rockabilly/blues/rock type tone and love the distinct sound you get from an Epiphone or Gibson semi-hollow electric!
+Jacob Jexmark That would actually be a great choice :D. The Junior's are really cheap, but they pretty much do the job. That means lots of money could be spent on amps and pedals.
I would also get a Reverb and maybe an EQ pedal too, just to have more options of clean tones out of just one amp, and still sound even more "B.B.Kingish"
Nice episode! Love your playing Rabea! Quick question: how different would you say the "tone era" you picked is to his tone on the 2010 Crossroads "Thrill is Gone" with Clapton, Cray, Vaughan. It sounds to me like his tone is a bit more "creamy". Do you think that would be a slight difference in reverb or is there something else? Thanks! there is no bb king tone without his vibrato, he wasn't a technical guitar player but his vibrato is one of the most soulful things i heard in my life

While no one could come near his tone, one more way they could have done it was put in a lighter set of strings. Really helps with the vibrato !

The Epiphone is a good choice, since BB's Gibson also is a maple body, which adds to the bright/clear tone :-)

Probably should be revisited. Two notes: he played a solid state amp for a lot of his career. He had a monster vibrato, which was key to his sound.

Quick question: how different would you say the "tone era" you picked is to his tone on the 2010 Crossroads "Thrill is Gone" with Clapton, Cray, Vaughan. It sounds to me like his tone is a bit more "creamy". Do you think that would be a slight difference in reverb or is there something else? Thanks!

Greetings. Love these videos!Can you guys please do a video to try and sound like SRV? I know most of his sound came from his hands and God given talent, but us mere mortals would be grateful if you could help to try and dial in that tone. I have a decent Strat (American Standard), and a decent amp (Hot Rod Deville 2x12). I would just love to see what Amp settings, pedals, guitar, and strings you select to dial in that tone. Very nice sounding guitar! I think you two need some kind of brief opening teaser! You need to get a couple old LAB series amps that he used to use.I'm old enough to remember them,and they were ahead of times when it came to overdrive on an amp.
