Cuando estaba viviendo con mis padres, estaba desempleado. Cannot you say here estuve desempleado when you see the time living with your parents as a completed period?
You would want to use "estaba" as in the example. However you could say that you were "let go" when you were living with your parents. It would be ...... fui desempleado. Fui = I was from the verb ser. By using "estaba" in the example you are saying that you were in the state of being unemployed without specifying a beginning and ending point or for how long. That is why it is "estaba". An incomplete past action. It would be like saying someone was divorced when living with his/her parents. It would be ..... estaba divorciado/a. During the time you were living with them you were "a divorced person". Use the Imperfect VN-5. Another example ...... When I was living with my parents I broke my leg. That would be Preterite VN-4. Se me rompió la pierna. But to say you had a broken leg when living with them, you would say ....... yo tenía la pierna rota. Imperfect VN-5. Hopefully this helps.
