Carla, thank you for these pearls. A big part of my battle is knowing what to say and when. It's a pretty awkward and intimidating experience not knowing what to say while trying to have my authentic self show up! And I also feel a bit discouraged when someone does not reply to my email. Most of my experience is customer service-oriented, and if my customer or I do not respond, it's generally considered something to address.

It's a great tip to set a goal. I did notice a change post-pandemic. When I was in graduate school in 2016, I was a networking machine. I traveled from Vancouver, Canada to Toronto, to NYC to Boston and networked with the Harvard endowment fund there. I just started to network again post-pandemic in 2023 (also had a three-year career break). I found I tend to stick with one person for the entire conference and lacked the energy to go after others. So goal setting is great. So is the "it's a big conference, I will let you go meet others, see you around" eloquent and authentic exit line.

I am 50. Is it too late for me? For decades, I have felt like I was on the outside looking in. I now want to get involved and win in the workplace.

50 is not too late considering the experience you probably have with you. Maybe you can get a coach and start each work day with the intention you will connect with the right people
