As someone who was raised on James Taylor, my dad played it EVERYDAY in the house as I was growing up. I think we all have an appreciation for the music we were brought up on....or maybe just me. Anyway, This was always my favorite JT song.
How cool that the bass note (G#, the 3rd of E) is used to lead the verse and the F# substitutes for the A later. Love the rising bass half-steps in the bridge too!!! Beauty!
I work in a hospital in Spain, COVID has increased again, thank you for not getting tired of warning people to take care of themselves. You are not only a great artist, you are much more than that, you are a great human being. Thank you for existing.
Mr Sklar, with all my respect, you should give us a master class about playing bassguitar. You could say, that you are not a teacher, you are more. Believe me, you would chang a lot of lifes.
Mr Sklar thank you for this song. It is one of my favorites. I also love Flora Purim and Airto's version along with Cassandra Wilson version. Although Covid for the most part is over, I was one of the nurses that worked on ICU during covid and music was what got us through the day. Thanks for making such great music.
Hi y'all such memories of my time in Brazil. What a country and most beautiful, pleasant people. I was working in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Rio. What a life changing experience. The music in Brazil and level of musicianship are next level. Ciao from NOLA.
What a beautiful video sir. You relate the true realities of these experiences. I worked with Wayne Shorter for almost 30 yrs myself and had many concerts in Brasil. What a treat. I love Only a dream in Rio so much. Bless you and thanks for your post. What a magic place and whst a great song. It brings tears to my eyes I hear it.
Concert goers now a days will never know the feeling of holding a lit Bic lighter till you almost burn your thumb off!!! Those were the days, Leland!! 🔥🥵🕯🇨🇦
I bought my very first vehicle back in the early 90s and took it to get a new CD player installed. While I was at the store picking it up, after the new system was installed, I purchased this album (That's Why I'm Here) which was the first album I ever played in it. And I still love listening to it!
I so love listening to your stories. Thank you Lee! Have a great and safe afternoon/evening everyone. Maybe it's me but the 'new position' of your phone makes it harder to hear the songs and you playing. Probably my old computer 😂
Another favorite song from James. Your bass part is such an important part of it (as it always is). Brought tears to my eyes listening to James and you.
Your stories are so good! One thing for sure, there will never be another James Taylor. And there will never be another Lee Sklar! Your style of playing has become JT’s signature sound. I’m also sending you a spare can Of WD40 for your chair even though it’s become part of your show. Thanks for all the wonderful music and Stories.
The phone ringing freaked us out,, I looked around and found our remote and I realized that nobody called. We had a good laugh! James writing style is very distinctive. You could have played this song without mentioning the writer, it is totally James. Great work. Please folks, get vaccinated.
I remember I was only fourteen and my parents thought it wasn't very safe for me to attend the concerts. So, I never made it but collected a lot of articles and magazines about Rock in Rio. I would stay up late to see some footages of the concerts that the TV used to air. I wish I was a bit older and knew Leland back then! 😄😄😄
Good Evening, aww on Happy Birthday Beautiful Linda💐 I spent the day wit my grandchildren. Took them to a movie for the first time since covid. Space Jams 🙂 Appreciate your sharing more interesting life adventures. Great tune.🎶💗
Hi Lee and Squeaky! This upcoming video is going to be awesome! Can't wait! I am so thrilled for your upcoming tour with Peter and Kate. It's going to be amazing. And this is one of my favorite JT tunes - gorgeous. Your bass playing is sublime.
I’ve been listening to the 1986 live Ohne Filter tv I imported this song through recording in the app Moises where you can listen to it instrumentally or with vocals, love it even more. This song gives me a great and light feeling.
Fab selection today❣️. A little island vibe, soothing. Thank you for this Leland, and for letting Linda know that we all wish her well.🎉🎂 Please be safe everyone 🤗 and have a great rest of your day😉 Hands, mask, distance, vaccinate!
Always loved this track, the atmosphere of the production, the unusual song structure, especially that five note passage on the outro (which catches me out whenever I try to play along!). Keep up the good work, Lee, your postings help keep us sane through these crazy times.
Great stories about your times at Air Montserrat. So sad what happened to the island after that volcano you climbed in 1985 became active a decade later.
Just discovered this! Oh Lee - long time fan forever of your music. So great to watch you here at work. Loved the stories and insight. Can't thank you and the guys for the hours, and hours of enjoyment over the years. Those bass runs are in my heart. When I go for walks. On long drives. Outstanding! Thanks so much for posting. All the best to you and all. Regards.
Do not under any circumstances exterminate that squeak. There’s a squeaky hinge on a door in our apartment here and I make it sing for extended periods sometimes. The wife just LOVES it too….😜
Then, in 1989, disaster struck when Hurricane Hugo hit the island, destroying 90% of its structures. The building and its equipment were irreparably damaged, and, perhaps aware that record labels wanted their stars closer to home, George Martin called it a day. His love for Montserrat never faded and in the wake of a later devastating volcanic eruption his fundraising efforts went a long way towards putting the island back on its feet.
Late to the show on this one! Don't know how I missed this up to now, but I was just watching Rio vids (saw you there) and #633 popped up for me. Your bassline is brilliant. Rio is a mesmerizing song as is, but the bass is so in the groove. Every time I hear this song I ache to go back to Rio again, but it's not the same as it was in the 70s and 80s. It was a magical place once.
How are you doing and thanks for your comment . You have same name with somebody I know . I was diagnosed of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) a year ago and my doc just told me i have two months to live . What tremendous stories!!! And one of the greatest songs of all time! Huge Friday treat! May never be an international music star, but glad to know that at one point I had transportation experiences (while helping to fill in for missing faculty in what was the poorest country in the world that year) that were just like those of rock stars!
Leaf blowers are the worst. I read that the 300,000 Rio show snapped JT out of a deep funk. love to you all. I was going to ask you about Tony Levin splitting bass duties on that LP in the next clubhouse. I love hearing you play bass Leland. so beautiful.
Hey Leland! Every time I watch you playing it makes me feel like playing too. So much inspirational your videos. Just to let you know I was watching James Taylor concert on Rock'n Rio in 1985. I can not remember, but I think you was playing with him on that concert, no? I am a brazilian, living in Poland now... take care you too Leland!

Lee, will you by any chance be part of the James Taylor tour in the UK early next year? I know it’s a long shot but I just got tickets this morning and it would make a great gig even better.
Did James come up with the bass line or did Tony? (originally) I'm here because RIck Beato's interview with Sting is up, and they were discussing the uniqueness of "Every little thing she does is magic" and I thought...wait a second, this is not the only place I've heard a whole tone ascension fit snugly into a popular song... Anyway, I love this, and always will.
Maybe you could do a collaboration with zack grooves on that squeaky chair song, he’s always making music with weird noises haha, thanks for another great one!
This may be my favorite song by JT. Of course as I say that, I’m sure other songs may circumvent that as I think of them. Regardless, ‘Rio’ is at least top 5.
Lee, Dad's 93rd birthday is next week. I hope you are staying safe. We have been keeping Dad safe and it's a hard job. He does go to a senior activity center twice a week. Watch out for the heat!

The chair has personality 🖖

It's interesting to see the difference between a part you created in the studio and a part you created and then toured and performed a 100 times.
