- Ohne Filter was a popular music program run by the German public TV station SWF from 1983 to 2001. The show featured international pop and rock artists, who would typically play a 45-minute set in front of a live audience in a TV studio.
This Ohne Filter James Taylor special was recorded on March 27, 1986 and first broadcast on January 2, 1987.

I'm still in shock and disbelief that the James Taylor TH-cam channel is now full of vintage footage that to the best of my knowledge no one has ever seen before. JT Team, you're doing a great public service by releasing clips like this! I'm a 31 year old JT fan so this era of his career was before I was born but I remember the "That's Why I'm Here" songs because I'm pretty sure I had the CD at some point. "Only a Dream in Rio" is one of my favorites from this era. My mom who has his earlier albums on vinyl says I've liked his music since I was at least 4 years old.. which is a story I cannot fully explain because I don't know how it happened. I just know as of 2018 (my last show) I've seen him in concert five times since I was in high school, starting with the 2010 Troubadour Reunion Tour that had Carole King.

I just LOVE the sheer enthusiasm of this performance. For those interested in what he sings in Portuguese on the mid section, here it goes: "When our mother awakes / We'll walk under the sun / When our mother awakes / She'll sing throughout the outback / When our mother awakes all of her siblings will just know / All of her siblings will surely know / And they,ll overjoy" In the end of the performance, but not in the original studio recording, he and the backup singers repeat "and they'll overjoy".

I also like how the camera work often features long, dwelling shots, unlike what seems to be a near-universal approach nowadays of changing the shot every 3 seconds (or even more quickly). Yamaha makes great sounding and beautifully crafted guitars at an affordable price. Never been disappointed with the multiple Yamaha musical instruments I've played. All rock solid , detailed craftsmanship and balanced sound. Nothing wrong with JT playing yamaha or any other brand. Its all in the hands!
In this setting, I would agree. Through a pickup, I think the difference is hard to tell. Acoustic, somewhat of different story. In this situation, it's all about setup and skill. Joe Pass, for example, could pickup a guitar made of a box and a broom stick and make it sound great.

I would love a little information on this concert. I saw him in Sunrise, Florida in 1986, and this has that feel to it. I really enjoyed those two backup singers. I believe it was his last concert before he was touring overseas. Something like that. The concert at Sunrise was just so amazing and had a tangible spiritual quality to it. I went with my boyfriend at the time, who was a jazz guitarist, studying at the University of Miami. He was so impressed.... ❤❤ I just saw his brother Livingston up in Bellows Falls, Vermont for a Christmas show. As usual, he was simply wonderful! Such an amazing family.🎉❤

The description to the above TH-cam video mentions it's from a German music program. I'm not from Germany myself though so unfortunately I can't really tell you much about "Ohne Filter". I'm just another fan, one who wasn't born yet in 1986. I'm 31 but that's cool you saw his brother Livingston. The two background singers I believe are Arnold McCuller and Rosemary Butler which I already knew due to seeing different footage from the 80s. Here they are again. I remember this concert from Public television because it had been recorded onto a home VHS tape not by me, but my mom. Is that JT playing a Yamaha? A "Poor Mans Martin"? I'd love to know the story behind that. I'm not putting down Yamaha - I grew up playing several Yamaha guitars and still have several. But, I've never seen JT playing one until now and I'd love to hear the story behind why he was playing one in this video or at this gig.
There is a video of James telling the stories of his guitars. Interesting stuff there.
@davehardy9555 the story of JT guitars its quite remarkable. First he had the Gibson J50. From 1969 till the end of 1972 (from Sweet Baby James to One Man Dog). During One Man dog sessions he get in touch with Whitebook guitars trough John McLaughin. And since 1973 until 1985 he stays with his own Mark Whitebook signature. So from Walking Man to the Dad loves his work album thats the guitar youre hearing. He lost the original Whitebook during his divorce with Carly Simon in 1983 so he had to build another one. But I think he needed something new and playable trough out his travels so after try some Martin guitars, Takamine, etc… He gets his Yamaha signature at the end of 1985. He uses it from 1985 to 1989 (Thats why im here and Never Die Young album) where he finally gets his famous Olson Guitar on guitar case in a hotel room.
