    Wis 1: 13-15, 2: 23-24 2Cor 8: 7, 9, 13-15 Mk 5: 21-43
    LIVE vs. EVIL
    Theme:
Our God is a God of life, not of death
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    Not Death, but Life:
When the only son of a pious, regular church-going Christian met an accident and died, many people, including the pious man, raised the question: ‘Why did God make him die?’ In similar vein, quite often we too ask, ‘Why does God allow such tragedies to take place?’ ‘The Problem of Evil’ is a major argument of atheists against the existence of God. It was first propounded by the Greek philosopher Epicurus and made widely known by atheists like Hume and Bertrand Russell. The basic thrust of the argument is ‘If God is both loving and powerful, then why is there evil in the world?’
The above considerations reveal that we hold God responsible for all sorts of forces of death including the evil that we undergo in our lives. The first reading corrects this notion of ours. It says “God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living.” Moreover it also says that God created human beings for immortality. In other words, the first reading tells us that God is the source of life, rather than of death. Our God is the God of life, not of death.
When we look at our lives, we can say that most of us quite often believe in a God of death than in a God of life. We seem to see God more as a source of death than of life.
