I know this is old, but you did a fantastic job of documenting this! Thank you.

Nice video. I like not having music so you can hear the tires rolling and what is going on around you. Thanks for posting.

There is a guidebook available from PTNY.org that has a lot of information about the trail including maps. I bought one but I pretty much used my GPS and phone for most of my navigation needs. The "Cycling the Erie Canal Facebook" group was also very helpful in planning my trip. Lots of locals in the group to give advice on trail conditions, food suggestions, and lodging. There are camping locations at many of the locks along the way that are decent. It is possible to do the entire trip without using hotels but I would look into WarmShowers to find some hosts in the more populated areas such as Syracuse and Scranton. It might be a bit more difficult to locate camping sites in those locations. It is a very accommodating trail though so yes, I imagine you could hit the road with minimal preparation.

Another great video ride. What kind of Garmin GPS did you use or can you recommend one, the link is no longer active. Looks like you could hotel the entire trip to lighten your load? C & O & GAP is next for me but I will consider this trail, getting soft and too old to camp and carry big loads. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words. I use a Garmin Edge 530 for navigation. It's not always the most intuitive navigation device to use but it does get me from A to B and has great battery life. If I upgrade in the future I think I might opt for one of the touch-screen models like the Garmin Edge 830 or Hammerhead Karoo 2.

Thanks for the beautiful autumn footage of the canal. Thanks for the tip on Hot Showers. Is it possible to avoid hotels all the way? Is there an essential guide book or map that I should consider, or is it possible to just hit the road?

PTNY.org has a trail guide book. I purchased on but honestly, I don't think it's necessary. There are so many online resources available that I barely used mine. I think that if you are wanting "just hit the road' it's doable but nothing beats some good preparation. If nothing else, you should spend some time in some of the Facebook groups for the ECT to find out about trail issues, detours, camping recommendations, etc. It's a great resource. I also used a Garmin Edge 530 bike computer to navigate the trail. It isn't super critical but there were a few detours on the trail where the Garmin really helped out.

Sketchy ride along the road, Route 31? Shucks, not for me, too bad the rest of the route was gorgeous with the fall colors.

Disappointed no video of going through Rochester / Pittsford / Fairport.
