It seems that this government is using the argument that farmers should help support public services. Why not suggest that members of public sector unions forgo their pay raises to protect our farmers? Well done, Victoria! Additionally an excellent interview with a rep from the farming communty.

They do it because they love it and are brought up from the cradle to think that is the only life for them. But it is an extremely tough life and the rewards very modest. Those who are like Clarkson are few and far between. Most of them have been in farming for generations. They do if for the love of the land knowing that they will not become rich doing this job. That they will need to sell a significant proportion of assets in order to pay it, making the business totally unviable even if payments are split over ten years. The younger farmer will be working for ten years for the taxman and their bank… what for? That’s no life and most will choose to sell up and the buyers will most likely be finance brokers who will not grow food and have no workers, but will use the land to offset airport and cement works carbon emissions, something the working food producing farmer is not allowed to do.

The rich, like Clarkson who bought farmland to avoid tax, have driven up prices. With this move the price will reduce and fall below the inheritance threshold.
