Departure ceremony for the 49th Deployment Surface Force Counter Piracy Enforcement, JS Murasame

This is an overseas deployment of the Self-Defense Forces to protect ships sailing in the vicinity from piracy acts by pirates operating off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden. Maritime Self-Defense Force escort ships carrying Coast Guard officers escort ships at sea as the Dispatched Anti-Piracy Action Surface Force, and P-3C patrol aircraft monitor the sea area from the air as the Dispatched Anti-Piracy Action Air Squadron. The Dispatched Anti-Piracy Action Air Squadron is a joint task force with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force , and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force is responsible for guarding and managing the base at the base established in Djibouti to operate the P-3C. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force also dispatches a unit to Djibouti to transport supplies and personnel.
