They kind of are geniuses, maybe not in the sense of music theory, but not many bands can give you such a feeling. They practically can control how you feel with their guitars.
It's kind of hilarious to see people say that this isn't music. The idea of drone doom, and Sunn O))) especially, is to experience the music meditatively and to bring the sonic experience to the absolute extremes. The sheer volume of the act leaves you numb, and sleepy to a sense. You come to a Sunn O))) show or album expecting a standard 4/4 beat with some major scale chord progression and you will be greatly disappointed. If you can't be subjective to different forms of art then you shouldn't really say anything about it really. Being a huge fan of experimental music and Sunn O))) particularly influences me as an artist, but so do the Rolling Stones, Drake, Slayer, Aphex Twin, and basically any other artist that I've listened to. You wouldn't go to an art gallery and say "oh the acting in this is shit." Because the obvious point of the art gallery is to admire paintings, sculptures, ETC, not to provide a viewing experience based on a story or characters. If you came to a Sunn O))) video expecting a sound like Sleep or other artists with the heavy slow riff based work and we're disappointed, thats understandable. But don't undermine the work of an artist because it's not what you wanted. Learn to appreciate other forms of art and you will see the world in a whole new light I can promise you that. It makes you less bitter.
"You come to a Sunn O))) show or album expecting a standard 4/4 beat with some major scale chord progression and you will be greatly disappointed." That's not really the issue. Most people (especialy metalheads and rock fans) would be fine with something in some crazy beat and using bunch of weird scales. A lot of notes and weird rhythms are technical - technical is good because you can "measure" the skills. But even for these people it's hard to stomach something this minimalistic because you can't say "this is art because a lot of notes".
Luke Blue tbh, i wouldmt really call this art. Art is more like a talent and this isnt necessarily talent. It s just one note. If they atleast did 2 chords then its debatable, but holding a string isnt art. In that case scribbling on paper is a form of art. If you do believe this is art though, then you must believe there is good art and shitty art aka arts & crafts. This is arts and crafts man.
I still remember the day they did. I was there. It was great. I'd love to experience something like that again, but it's pretty much a "once in a lifetime thing", I guess. (Don't get me wrong, I'm *perfectly happy* with the note they're playing right now. It's got *several* good years left in it still. I'm not even sure we've heard its *true peak* yet...)
chstacy33 Yes but Sunn's are actually turned on, when bands have walls of amps on big stages its often for appearance with them not actually turned on as the actual amp they are playing through is behind the stage mic'd up to the pa system..
One of my favorite videos in general. I love the intro of the camera operator walking through the speachless crowd. It seems like everyone there is being hypnotized by the sound coming from deep wtihin the fog. It's staight out of a Lovecraft story.
BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo BWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo That's what our ancestors imagined when they first started to create music.
its the circuits in the pedals doing all the work i could play diminished chords with loads of fuzz when i was 13 dude this aint impressive i like loads of doom/stoner stuff but there has got to be some level of songwriting ability otherwise its just playing chords with lots of distortion FACT
I saw these guys at a like 100 person venue in Cleveland called Grog Shop, was like a 16 hour round trip, and I had a new job to start the following day. Absolutely insane, totally worth it. To try to explain how it feels would be a total waste of time. You have to experience it for yourself
Saw them for the second time yesterday. Wish I had been barefoot for the set, frequencies so insane that I had the sense that I could probably hear it through the floor with my feet if I was barefoot. I know that sounds stupid, but if you've experienced these guys live it won't sound so crazy. Totally meditative trip. Will always watch them if they're playing anywhere near me.
Mate a fighter jet breaking the sound barrier right over my head was QUIETER than this fxxking band live! When I saw them no joke - Loudest band on the planet. Period.
This band is about experience. When you people argue that this isn't music, us fans aren't necessarily disagreeing... The point of this (based on my opinion and Sunn O)))'s explanations) is not to make catchy memorable tunes, but to set an atmosphere which puts you in a simpler-minded state that calms you down or messes with your head and manipulates your ability to keep track of time. But of course everyone has their own view of it.
i think what some people are misunderstanding is that sunn O))) is not about how it sounds. it's about how it makes you feel, through the use of high sound levels that vibrate your entire body. i didn't like sunn O))) until I saw them live. now its just reliving the memory when I listen to the albums.
this is the best live video from Sunn O))).I used it to make people experience the sensation I had when I first saw them performing. It brings me back the chills...how powerful, how carismatic, how innovative. Thanks for uploading such a piece of art.
Saw them last week. Best concert of the year for me so far. People who criticize don't get that is not a concert made of songs but moments. Also is not just about the music but the whole experience. The fog, the lights, the pressure of the sound waves that makes your organs vibrate... It's about the whole package.
Yeah mate and if someone smells the weed you just say that it's incense. Was once at a black metal concert where they used incense and my friend thought someone actually smoked weed
Well put, I've given these dudes quite a few listens. It's not for everybody, good for blazing and staring at the wall for a few hours to clear your mind...
this is completely amazing. a total meditative experience with sound.. and the concept, the live performance, the church...it all fits perfectly with the music... because this IS music.. at its pure state and form
These guys have to be the ultimate in Gothic Drone rock. They are either completely insane or genius - I happen to believe the latter. I have all their recordings and so I can say they know what they are about and they are the best at this. If you do not like the sound - tough shit. Written with the full approval of the Correctional Mental Facility I am currently residing in.
Guys, can we all take a moment to appreciate how, at 0:51, the camera clearly catches a dude doing a key bump of coke. That is hilarious to me. And yes. Sun 0))))). YES.
If this video was filmed (it is 2021 now, as I leave this comment) ten years ago, that was definitely me in that shot. Didn't know I was caught on tape!!!
I know this video was brought to me by a dude with his camera out, but I kind of find it ridiculous how many people have their cameras / phones out trying to record the band rather than just experience them.
sunn O))): Atmosphere cranked to 11. Sonic manipulation at the cellular level. Dissonance, harmonics, feedback, noise. The living essence of pure sound. Love it! ^^
There are many people in this video that look like they live in town and attend this church regularly and just happened to go there when Sunn 0))) was performing lol
am i missing something about people trying to make "memes" about sunn's music in every comment section of any sunn video? i honestly dont get it. its like going to iron maiden's videos and try to be funny cause they play solos or cause they have 3 guitarists, or going to rap videos and make fun cause they sing/rap fast. i honestly dont get the point. drone is form of art and music dating a long time before sunn or metal as a genre. if someone dont like/get it, whats with trying to be funny about it?
its sometimes funnt with the joke that they "play a note every 2 hours" and i gotta be honest, i myself cracked a stupid joke in front of my dad and said "look dad, i will do a drum cover of sunn o))) now" (does nothing because sunn doesnt have drums). but aside from the jokes i think this sunn o))) is a masterpiece of a band. i was always into atmospheric ambient drone stuff and i just fell in love with drone doom as soon as i found sunn o))) (and later on boris, sll their songs are crazy good). i dont get how people say this is no music, and a lot do. theyre just close minded about the genres they like and dont even want to research about other genres. drone is overall kind of underrated anyway
Awesome eerie, sinister minimalist Drop D drone, slow moving, like shadowy ship crawling in the river towards the blast furnaces and slag heaps in the 3 am darkness.
While I couldn't ever imagine buying a Sunn CD and actually listening to it, I'd love to see them live. Fair enough, it's not music necessarily, at least not by modern standards, but the theatre, atmosphere and pure boneshaking bass loudness has them in my top ten bands to see live before I die (or they split up).
couldn't have said it better , I love this soundscape, see all, my playlists, most are sunn-0 but I like valefor , stalaggh, gulaggh, this is the ultimate in sound , there isn't nothing better than these guys , Ive heard this sound in my head , since 1970 when I grabbed my first sg and fed it thru a roland 1, 200 watt stack ,

I love the haters..you don't get it..about as much as I get Miley Cyrus...this isn't something I invite the neighbors over and we drink Pina Coladas and get to know each other to. It really is not "music" to me, its like a barrier of sound waves opening opening up for me to enter into. My mind just goes elsewhere.
These guys are UNIQUE...but definitely not musical geniuses. No one ever thought of dressing up like this with an ominous theme and all of that dropped A tuning with no drumming. Maybe its not appealing to most people, but they came up with an awesome idea and they're pretty well off with it. Good or bad, they were the first guys to put experimental metal into action...
The sheer pressure of the sound (they have towers of amps, but they do use all of them). It's not unusual for people in their shows to need earplugs, experience dizziness, nausea, and it's normal for people to fall on their ass when they stop playing because of the loudness creating a sonic wall. Try to mosh when you have this slow and *LOUD* ass wall of sound.
I was there. Still one of the most atmospheric and unforgettable concerts I ever saw.
I was too. great
U lucky guy
Couldn't ask for a better setting for this type of music.
Cosmic Heruka I’m seeing them in a cave in Tennessee on 4/20
I did sound for them in the morgue room of the bristol coroners court :O
Now this is a house of worship I could regularly attend
Sooo.... what's in that SMOKE ???
(vape nation!)?
Same here
@@SeaJay_Oceans big bong hits
I just wish I could see them play live again. Last time was in 2014
Start a drone band dude! Then the people will come ;)
Sunn o))) is the type of unique experience that makes your body your ear.
never comment.. but just recently saw them.. your description sums it up perfectly.
Sunn O))) were the metal Brian Eno
They kind of are geniuses, maybe not in the sense of music theory, but not many bands can give you such a feeling. They practically can control how you feel with their guitars.
its all about sound and frequencies man, told by richard aphex twin, mick harris, jk broadrick some modern sound manipulators masters
Well I enjoyed their concert more than Black Sabbath (and I paid like 15 times more for that Sabbath ticket)
Satan enjoyed Sunn O more than Black Sabbath lol
a church! A Big Church!

+Campbell Trotter Big Church, or a rendition of it, since lots of the stuff they do live is improvisation.
+TriPlayerGames Luke scratch that, its most likely just an improv piece, since this was filmed in 2006 and M & D came out in 2009.
"You come to a Sunn O))) show or album expecting a standard 4/4 beat with

Kurtis Pittman Hey buddy, fuck you.
I'd love to see Sunn live in a giant church with fog everywhere.
no no no Lol touché, good point, my joke is a fail.

I’ve seen you before John

The actually only have like 7 amps, like 1/4 of the amount of what slayer has
chstacy33 Yes but Sunn's are actually turned on, when bands have walls of amps on big stages its often for appearance with them not actually turned on as the actual amp they are playing through is behind the stage mic'd up to the pa system..
true, i've also seen bands who's cabs are comptletley fake
chstacy33 A lot of them are just the cab frames without anything loaded in them, so just a wood box basically.
True true, there's a ton of pictures of fake cabs and such.
One of my favorite videos in general. I love the intro of the camera operator walking through the speachless crowd. It seems like everyone there is being hypnotized by the sound coming from deep wtihin the fog. It's staight out of a Lovecraft story.

This is Pure Art! Hail!!
Weirdest thing listening to this on LSD. Can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to actually be there in the church whilst on LSD xD
I got all the making right here! ALL I NEED IS A PLACE TO COOOOK!

WHY THERE'S NO MOSHPIT
How do you mosh to something this slow?
Like these guys do:
Very slowly.
A slowpit
theres another video of them thats 2 hours long but one random guy stage dives out of nowhere
Moshpit in echo)))es
Sounds like someone overloaded a washing machine.
I showed up 2 days late to a Sunn O))) concert once, but it was alright, they had just started the second song.
That is why distortion pedal was invented
Heavy metal as performance art.
Best live band ever... can't wait to see them again
am i the only one who thinks this is the best title for sunn ever
Guys, can we all take a moment to appreciate how, at 0:51, the camera clearly catches a dude doing a key bump of coke. That is hilarious to me.

It’s weird. I feel like I’m not supposed to like this but I fucking love it.
"Defeating: Earth's Gravity" from 'GrimmRobe' is the main section of this epicness.
A friend of mine showed me this in 2011 and I have never forgot it.
0:51 You don't want none of this Dewey, GET out of here!
Plot twist: The fog is actually marijuana smoke
OH MY GAWWW ... my mouth is still open from the raw awesomeness of this..
Church of Model T. I came here for that.
This is the only appropriate use for a church
I know this video was brought to me by a dude with his camera out, but I kind of find it ridiculous how many people have their cameras / phones out trying to record the band rather than just experience them.
looks like the best place on earth
really fast and technical!! i would love to know so good guitar!
sunn O))): Atmosphere cranked to 11. Sonic manipulation at the cellular level. Dissonance, harmonics, feedback, noise. The living essence of pure sound.
Love it! ^^
I was thinking about going to see this gig next month. They might be on track 3 by then.
Great job with the recording and the visual - no pixalation or dropping out of sound. Love it! Now i want to see them live!
THAT IS THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!! :O
This is some of the best music ever
🤣
I bet this was great live
There are many people in this video that look like they live in town and attend this church regularly and just happened to go there when Sunn 0))) was performing lol
I'm 11 years old and for some reason I like this xD?
Because you have good taste.
Yeah... I'm 13 and love this too!🤘
I'm 16 and i love it too
thank god its a big church, when i first read 'church' i didn't think it was right but the correction set me straight, thanks
am i missing something about people trying to make "memes" about sunn's music in every comment section of any sunn video?
i honestly dont get it. its like going to iron maiden's videos and try to be funny cause they play solos or cause they have 3 guitarists, or going to rap videos and make fun cause they sing/rap fast. i honestly dont get the point.
drone is form of art and music dating a long time before sunn or metal as a genre. if someone dont like/get it, whats with trying to be funny about it?
its sometimes funnt with the joke that they "play a note every 2 hours"

The only drawback is that it has to stop. I could listen to that 24-7-365.

Am I the only one waiting for something to happen.
If you guys want to know how Sunno sounds at home.
Get a turn-table and buy the 2xLP «Domkirke» recorded live in the church of Bergen...it's the most epic album of Sunno in my opinion...and I have all their album LP and CD...
And yeah, listen to it loud, in total dark and get high...amazing. thanks for posting!
How the hell do they keep track of the timing?
I really want to go to a sunn show and just close my eyes and drift off. Perfect music. So much bass its like a massage.
This is the cetacean brown note.

Damn, it looks like a dream vision, all this fog in a 'sacred' place... it must've been a metaphysical experience.

DavidTheCatMedia really doubt it
That looks dope I wish I was there
Fuck when is sunn coming back to America I have to see them
Did you catch them on their latest tour?
no i wish
This is really, really high quality for being a pocket cam.
The audience is completely controlled by the sound. Why is everybody standing still?
the vibrations are so intense they're paralysed probably
The sheer pressure of the sound (they have towers of amps, but they do use all of them). It's not unusual for people in their shows to need earplugs, experience dizziness, nausea, and it's normal for people to fall on their ass when they stop playing because of the loudness creating a sonic wall. Try to mosh when you have this slow and *LOUD* ass wall of sound.
this is so amazingly great.

this title is certainly a Sunn o))) pun of all time (Big Church has got to be one of their best songs)
damn it must be very hard to make this kind of music
Oscar AlfaX some say you might even have to think
I see, thanks for the info. I'm not really into this but respect the fact they are making the type of music they want with no compromises.
I'm actually still waiting for this to get good. Spoiler: it never does.

Better than this anyway...

Brilliant!.....I'm seeing Sunn O]]] this Wednesday....IN A BIG CHURCH!!!!!!
You're right, that church IS big
