Stellar find. I'd be tempted to remove the paper sticker, but that seldom comes to good end. I often binge listen to After Dark at bedtime. You two rock.
Yes, the sticker is a shame, isn't it! Though I'm still pinching myself that I managed to find it in Alresford bookshop. Oddly, the owner did not seem to realise the connection with Mitford.
Gambling was a serious problem in the Georgian & Regency eras. Many fine estates were put in peril over some indolent peer not being able to control this vice. Her father was fortunate his family didn't abandon him, it was not unusual that a woman might return to her family versus putting up with an inopportune husband.
Brilliant find! And how fascinating Mary’s story is
Thanks. And yes, her life and work are both equally interesting!
is this Mitford an ancestor to the Mitford sisters of the 1930's fame?

Aspersions, not dispersions, may be cast.
Yes, I was shocked about that silly mistake from someone with a PhD too!
@@blackbird365 Ah well, we all make silly mistakes so let's not cast aspersions 😉
@@Brightangel55 We used deliberate malapropisms growing up & used to 'cast nasturtiums.' She was probably in similar joking mode. :)
Is she related to the six Mitford girls famous from the 20th century?
I don't believe so - I'd need to look into it!
@@MaddyPelling The later Mitford girls did tend to go against the trends! Thanks for bringing this find into the light!
