    I bought a 48-49 Aristocrat with the cream color dispenser. It was supposed to simply be a display piece since it’s one of my favorites. However, I tried it and it’s now become my daily driver. It’s consistent, smooth, and feels great in the hand. I would recommend it to anyone trying out different vintage razors.

    I just recently purchased a 1946/47 Aristocrat in NOS condition for only $49+$5 shipping off ebay!!! It came with 8 brand new condition Blue Blades, the blade holder and even the reminder card in the holder to purchase more blades!! It also has the original pamphlet instructions!! I couldn't believe the price!! I saw a similar set going for over $350!! Right time, right place!! Thanks for doing all these archive series videos!!

    I bought one the other day on Facebook marketplace for $50. It is a late 40s early 50s model with the case and spot for the blade bank. Great condition with original plating! I am going to clean it up a bit and it will be my daily driver.

      I got a nickel plated TTO Superspeed I think? It has the notch on the T bar and looks like his except mine is nickel or stainless? Very nice knurling in the handle and doors are buttery smooth. Came with an Old Gillette Blue blade dispenser filled with original blades. They look amazing with the all blue blade and steel edge… is it an aggressive razor would you say?

    My Dad had a Gillette Aristocrat razor when I was growing up in the 1950's. I have no idea what happened to it when he passed away. About three years ago I found one on EBay and added it to my collection of DE razors. It has the notched center rail so I'm guessing it's a 1948-49 vintage. It's in regular use, along with my 1961 (G-2 Date Code) Fatboy. 73 years old (like me) and it still gives me a smooth shave every time

    Hi Matt- Great presentation; thank you! I have a 1948-50 Aristocrat that was a great find on eBay. It was just the razor, but it was in near-mint condition, with the original plating. It’s a great shaver and enjoy using it several times each year. I hope you have a great weekend ahead and all the best!

    I recently purchased a 1941 Aristocrat, which comes in a gold case with the 1930s style blade bank. It has smooth knurling on top and bottom and no end caps. It also has no notches in the center bar. I'm surprised that you didn't mention the 1941 as part of this video.

    I have one made in the UK. I think it’s rhodium plated. “Belongs in a museum “ I actually shave with it. XD I came to DE-Razors as I was studying and didn’t had a lot of money for cartridges. So I used them carefully and tried to extend their life with some tricks. One evening I had a date. I didn’t shave for three days on purpose to minimise razor burn. But when I went to my shave I realised the cartridge was dull. No way to cheat to get another shave out and it’s been my last one. Also shops were already closed. What I did have were those “old razor blades” what I needed for university. And as they are called that way I started asking myself how I could use them to have a shave. Google gave me the answer and I remembered that my dad had one of those. So, I called my mum - went to her place - found it - had the scariest but best shave of life and stayed with it until now.

    I bought a 46-47 off of eBay the other day for 12 bucks cleaned up nicely and it's become my favorite shaver. Needs a new end cap on one side but when I want a rhodium ravamp with end cap I'll be doing it. That along with the mid 60s flair tip are my favorite shavers.

    *I just picked up my first vintage razor! It’s a notched nickel (Superspeed I’m guessing) TTO I got at the antique shop for $20* in excellent/great condition with pack of Super Blue blades and a WW1 Everready (it says *Gem clog proof* inside the case) single blade razor military issued case. It’s dark olive green and has an eagle with a American flag in his belly and inside the case says Gem clog proof?! The razor however, is notched so dates would be starting at *July 1947-whenever* not sure?
    Now the DE blades look so unique, (I’ve used a lot of different blades) with the all dark blue blades except for the shiny steel edge and saying made in the USA with a quality dispenser case. This is my first vintage razor ever and I read online that you gotta do the work and call antique stores and dig. So I called a bunch of stores and some took my name and number and said will call me if they find what I’m looking for…. and the 8th or 9th call the guy said *“Yeah, I got something like that. It’s definitely a safety razor and it’s made by Gillette is all I know. I’ll be open for 2 more hours if you wanna come see.”* I used GPS to put his store address and I was there is 15min. Just him and some other old man in his mid 70’s… just the typical antique shop owners that were really nice to talk with. He was surprised I shave with safety razors… he said *“Does Gillette still make those blades?”*
    Me: *“They do still make DE blades, not in the USA and they’re all raw stainless colored. They’re mostly made in Russia and a few made in India, but Gillette still makes some of the best DE blades. Personna is the only DE blade manufacturer in the USA I know of and their Med Prep blades are in my top 3”*
    Him *No kidding… These kids today don’t shave…and all have beards?! I think they’re afraid to cut themselves, so they just let their beards grow all wild?”*
    He was a nice guy and I spent about 15 minutes talking about razors and how there has been a big resurgence in traditional wet shaving. Common or not I’m happy with this 1947-? Nickel Superspeed and it’s worth $20 even if it didn’t work in terrible condition (to me of course) but this thing was well taken care of. Whoever had it was very old he said and when he died his kids brought all his stuff… the guy who as in the military is all I know and after looking up the case he served over seas in WWI because it’s definitely an American military issued Gem case. Razor looks like new after the toothbrush scrub. I can’t believe how solid the TTO action is. Again, first razor was a cheap modern TTO (Weishi) that had so much slop in the doors it broke eventually. This nickel finished Gillette notched Superspeed TTO is small and weight seems just right. I sanitized it with alcohol after washing it with a man old toothbrush and Dawn dish soap. I think this might actually shave decent. I’ll find out tonight when I use it… what a great find for my first vintage razor.. If you’re still reading sorry for the rant!

    Hi Matt. Thank you very much for continuing with this series. The 1940's Gillette Aristocrat: I have a 1946/47 that you revamped in an awesome two tone (Gold and Rhodium). @@RazorEmporium I’ve watched your videos before but not on vintage Gillette’s. Just picked up my first vintage Gillette TTO (Superspeed I think) with the notch in the T-bar. No code but says *PATNOS ONPKG* stamped under the T bar. The finish is nickel or stainless and is incredible condition for $20 with the Gillette Super Blue blades dispenser. Blades look like I could shave with but the codes look worn… either U1 or O1?! Great video I learned things about Gillette that I had no idea! I have a E3 1959 Fatboy on the way also. I can see why people like these vintage Gillette razors… they’re built so well. That TTO is so smooth it doesn’t compare with these Chinese replica’s. I didn’t know a TTO could be that smooth? Mine its later July/1947- whenever… up to 1966 maybe?

    Like always, excellent video Matt. I can’t comment about having shaved with any vintage razors since I am fairly new to wet shaving, however I can comment on your excellent customer service. I recently sent in my Rex ambassador because I happen to notice the adjustment plate slightly crooked. You guys, without question, took in the razor and are doing everything you can to fix it, and if it can’t be fixed you are promising to replace it, free of charge. If that’s not outstanding customer service then I don’t know what is. You have gained a loyal customer, thank you so much and be well.

  • @DervishD
    @DervishD ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't think you're still reading comments for such an old video, Matt, but just in case: I got a British Aristocrat (around 1948 I think, but I'm not sure) for peanuts in a flea market. You would not believe the state it was, but it was just gunk! I was able to remove the bottom "clockwise to loosen" screw, I have special screwdrivers, and remove the silo doors and the inner bar, to remove the unbelievable amount of junk INSIDE the handle. No big deal.
    My problem is, though, that I cannot remove the twisting knob at the end and I haven't found any information about the internals of the handle to know how to remove it, if at all possible. I'd love to know if there is any trick to remove this, so I can clean the inside of the handle properly. I have brushes that fit but I'm not sure if that will be enough.
    This said, I know it is your business and I'm not trying to get advice for free, I would love to send you the razor for a full rhodium re-plating but from Spain to Philadelphia it would be quite an expense for a razor I plan to have just for my showcase. But if you a) read this comment and b) you think it is not a breach of your business policies to share that information, I would be very thankful. I understand if you are not ready to share that information, of course, you're a professional ☺ and in that case I'll wait for the proper moment to have it sent to you! Thanks!

    • @RazorEmporium
      @RazorEmporium  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the handle won't be able to be removed unless you commit to a major restoration. the guard is locked in place (look near the circle where the center rod goes up and down) - you will see swage marks where the neck was smashed into the guard with a machining process. you have to undo that - and once you do that, there is no re-do without silver solder and a jewelry torch. and even then the solder sometimes isn't uniform or you have to plate it to eliminate the solder appearance. my advice- wash it many times with dish detergent / hot water / toothbrush and leave well enough alone.

    • @DervishD
      @DervishD ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RazorEmporium Matt, thanks A LOT for the explanation. I'll leave it alone, I'll remove as much gunk as I can with dish detergent (even though the thread of the inner rod and other parts have a ton of limescale, but I'll be gentle there) and if in the future I can afford it, it will go to you for a full revamp 😉
      I'm going to check how expensive is sending a razor your way, because if it is something I can afford I'm going to send you the next good one I find on that flea market (sometimes is a real treasure for razors) as a present for your company's collection 👼
      Anyway, the handle cannot be removed, I counted on that, but the small turning knob at the end looks "loose", now that the center rod is removed. Can it be removed or again, it's much better to leave it as-is?
      Thanks a lot, Matt, you're great.

    Ok, so here’s a question for you: I just won and will be receiving soon a gold-plated Gillette Aristocrat that appears maybe to be a hybrid of the two. It has the smooth band above and below the nurling, and it has the full spelling of package on the inside bar, BUT it has the notched sides for the blade entry, not the capped ones from the 46-47. Should I assume that I am getting a intentional frankenstein, that this might be from early ‘48 and Gillette still had handles and package-stamped plates left over but only had the new notched bar?

For instance there is no diamond shape, it looks solid and the bars which connect to the doors are cast with no folded parts. I cannot wait to try it. It has a number on the underside 430030. Have you come across any of these?

    I’m confused! My aristocrat has “PAT. NOS. ON PACKAGE” like you say the 1946-1947 has. However, mine has the knurling and center bar notch you describe on the 1948-1951. I don’t know what year my razor is after watching this video😂

      There were a lot of "parts razors" made by Gillette. If you can believe it, they didn't make these razors for collectors 70 years down the line.... LOL they were made to sell razor blades. A lot of confusing stuff with the aristocrat era in the 40's.

    What about a razor with 1950 test stamping. Specifically, V 3. I have one and don't know the actual worth. I also have a super speed with the same markings.

      I wouldn't say it's worth more necessarily, but it's certainly scarcer.

    I found a Gillette branded double edge safety razor in an antique store that kind of looks like yours and has similar markings but the handle looks thinner and it is a silver color - guessing it's made of steel and aluminum? No idea what I have for sure though.

    Matt is it correct to assume the Aristocrat's head is the same they used in other models selling at the same time like the SuperSpeed?

      The guard is likely identical but the neck is different.

    I have two user-grade '48-'51 Aristrocrats that I picked up from an auction site. My favorite is one that I refer to as the "Impoverished Patrician" because of its down in the mouth condition when I first got it. I also have a '41 in its nice gold case; it is basically the same as a '46 but without end caps. I wish you had mentioned those and the Regent Tech in this video.
    One more question... any thoughts as to where the Executive fits in to the Aristocrat family (or if it does at all)?

    Hey Matt, very interesting, as always.
    Can you try to make a show about the german Gillette shavers? I think they were sold mainly as "Rotbart" shavers since 1931, when the company Roth Büchner GmbH from Berlin became a part of Gillette.

    I have one that I believe to be '46 - '47. It has end caps, boxed end center bar, the word package spelled out. But the top band under the head has knurling, the bottom band is smooth.
    The 2nd one I have I believe to be '48 - '51. It has end caps, the center bar is notched, The top handle band is knurled, the bottom band is smooth, but the word "package" is spelled out on it also. The only difference in the two is the notched center bar. Have you ever heard of this in this Aristocrat line???

    So I just picked up an Aristocrat and I'm left scratching my head after watching this video. The mystery here is that on my Aristocrat the handle has the rough knurling on the top ring of the later model but when you open it... the center bar is not knotched and the inside says pat nos on package. My razor also came in the smaller leather style case. Could this possible be a variety that came out in '47 or '48 that has both types of features?

    Matt, thanks for a terrific video as always. I am hoping you can help me out. I recently acquired a 46-47 Aristocrat. However is has no engraving on the baseplate when you open the doors. "Patent Number" is nowhere to be found on the razor. Everything else matches up with the 46-47 Aristocrat. The bottom side of the baseplate is engraved in the manner it should be. What do you think is the reason for this.? Thanks for your help on this. I really appreciate it.

      King didn't die before he was out of the business. I believe he sold his shares in the 1910's (teens). Valet Autostrop took a controlling interest in 1931.
