La storia dell'osservazione astronomica parte da molto lontano, in territori insospettabili. Il primo astronomo fu Luigi Lilio, scienziato italiano, calabrese, ideatore del calendario gregoriano. La sua storia ci è d'ispirazione per continuare i suoi studi nelle terre che gli hanno dato i natali e investire sulla cultura e la scienza.
Sandra Savaglio è un'astrofisica che ha lavorato allo Space Telescope Science Institute e alla Johns Hopkins University di Baltimora, inoltre, all'Istituto Max Planck di Fisica Extraterrestre di Monaco di Baviera. Nel 2004 è apparsa sulla copertina della rivista Time come simbolo dei cervelli in fuga.
