Do not forget that the zouaves owe their name to a tribe, the zouaras who very quickly pledged allegiance to the French in 1830 during the capture of Algiers. It was decided to create two battalions with these Muslim Tirbal soldiers and a Turkish-inspired uniform. The zouaves were quickly composed only of non-Muslim Frenchmen and the tribal warriors were poured into the Algerian skirmishers. Alongside the Zouaves, you also had the Turcos, in a different uniform (blue-gray) in fact Algerian skirmishers made up of native Muslims. The zouaves were recruted in the infamous neighborhoods and the cut-throats of Paris !🙂
A number of streets in Melbourne Australia are named after events of the Crimean war as well as the suburb of Balaklava . When we first arrived from the UK in 1964 we lived briefly in Inkerman street.
Funny enough I first heard of Zouaves in the context of American volunteers dressing in their style and in the presence of Zoaves in the French invasion of Mexico. It's interesting to see how the French, like the British, used imperial subjects all over the world. So the French had African soldiers in their armies for a century of imperial war.
There were several Crimean wars and none of them couldnt break the russians. The last one had it culmination in Sevastopol (The Western War) that anded up at the Sevastopol )) The small group of russian wariors commanded by Lazarev and Nahimov couldnt save the Sevastopol, but the fact is that in general there wasnt any actions outside the Sevastopol after all. All the countries envolved were stoped and turned away home. The Great Victory of the union troops couldnt break nothing but the Sevastopol that remained russian )) Another fact that stays in hystory is that French troops repeatedly saved the British from utter disgrace !!! Never forget that fact !!! And what about Florence Nightingale, do you remeber her and what she has done ?? GOD save the queen ... say it to Florence ))

Napoleon and Victoria's goals of the war was to protect the Ottoman Empire from complete collapse: Nicholas wanted to protect his conquests and the right of conquest. The allies succeeded in removing Russian power from the Black Sea, curbing imperial expansion and keeping Turkey from complete collapse. It's ironic than in less than three generations it would be the British and French attacking the Turks and claiming their empire for their own. The Ottomans fell in 70 years, but the Romanovs fell with them. The war acted as an equalizer to the Ottoman and Romanov dynasties. It was all part of the Great Game between France, Britain and Russia as each power conquered Asia. The great game reached its climax with the partition of China, and ended with the Great War causing a Romanov collapse and greatly weakening the French and British Empire. The entry of Japan and the US into Asian imperialism and the increasing national resistance against the colonial powers led to the unraveling of the Asian empires. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the British concession of Hong Kong marked the end of the era of the Great Game. We have something similar going on now with Russian and American imperial ventures in the Middle East, but without the direct colonies and annexation of territory, it's very different. Imperial competition has drastically changed with the advent of the end of true colonies and the imposition of the Cold war status quo.
