A small film could not have a bigger philosophical question: what is more important, inner development or outward social action?
In a nunnery in the high desert mountains of Mustang, a revered abbess dies, leaving signs that she will be reborn in the precious human form once more. Prayers and rituals must be done to help her consciousness into its next rebirth, but the nunnery coffers are empty. The senior nuns decide that the only way out is to retrieve money loaned out by the nunnery.
The two nuns assigned this mission are Karma, a free-spirited nun, and her opposite, Sonam, a more by the book nun.

A fantastic film. Instead of stereotypes, real people emerge from this tale ostensibly of a nun's search for repayment of a debt, which will then be used to pay for traditional prayers for her Abbess, who has just died. But, as in a hero's journey, or a tale of spiritual awakening, the nun fulfills a debt owed by the abbess to a young nun previously under her care, who ran away from the abbess's harsh discipline, and was lost to an unhappy life of vice. The nun recognizes that the abbess's true intent was to save her from the glittering yet empty world of Samsara, and after learning of the tragic outcomes of women who'd run away looking for love, or an escape from their families, develops true renunciation with the determination to devote her life to Buddhist Practice.

You understand all this from this video? I see a long boring two thirds of the movie with no real content. Then everything is crammed in the last part when she is in Kathmandu and travels by bus with the man she was looking for. Suddenly it's a whole another story about women running away and the deceased nun having a part in that. Really neither does the story become really clear in the end due to lack of time nor does it make up for the two thirds of meaningless boredom. I really would have liked to see the story you discribed.
You did not see her returning the money, neither how she figured out she should. The real story was actually missing. I would not have understood it without your explanation.
The film is completely non spiritual. All that you say she understood in the end is invisible to the human eye, because it is not shown in the video. Sorry but it is not well made at all. The two thirds of time and film waisted could have been used to tell the story. Very disapointing. Not one reference to Buddha. Only the prostrating woman had something to say, yet that was also about the body as was all the rest of it.
Not like any other Buddhist film I have watched, that was full of wisdom. Were they trying to say that women have no spirituality?

@@ginahochstein3716 Yes, you are right about most parts could be so boring, but that’s because we are from fast pace side of the earth. However, this movie is truly made reflecting the actual life and culture over there. And, in real life, wisdom could not be seen with our naked eyes...most of the time. But, only from our hearts and practices. This movie incorporated emptiness because everything and every situations have both sides of a coin. For example, even though nun Karma has received the money but she returned it even though she had went through a great deal to get it (she ran out from the bus, remember?) because she did not just blindly listen to all the rumors of that man Tashi. Instead, she let herself open to the ultimate truth. By practicing the Noble Eightfold Path, then only she could let go of the big “I”, accept that man Tashi’s views as well as supported the demised abbess’ intention to assist Tashi with the money in helping e.g. ladies whom had made mistakes. Like many of us, demised abbess made mistake in the past by pulling her “strings” too tight, and it snapped..her young nun relative ran away, which caused her great greave and guilt until she decided to be reincarnated because she has unfinished business (the adult and child foot prints on her ashes). This is why inner peace is vital for nirvana. Another example of pulling string too tight is the mother who sells food that wanted desperately to marry off her young daughter. She loves her daughter too great until she could only see her own concern and fear, and failed to understand her daughter, and her daughter has determined to run away. This is why it is so crucial for us to understand and practice Middle Way.
In a nutshell, other movies give you what they want you to see, which I also enjoy very much😊. But, this movie throws you real life situations and events, and you learn to pick-up points. This could also help you to practice and realize Buddhist philosophies in our day-to-day life. All the best 😄. Sarva Mangalam 🙏🏻.

How is this movie spiritual? These nuns hagle back and forth like putujanas! Totally engaged and entangled with the issues of the world. There was one nun who told the cook not to say as anything about Tashi or going to ksthmandu. Inciting the cook to keep a secret and cover up. Where is your discenment? This movie has 0 value. A waste.

I was not expecting this. One of the best movie to come out of Nepali Film Industry in my opinion. What boggles me is the fact that they made movie of such caliber 15 years ago and it went downhill from that. We need to support good filmmakers and make Nepali Film Industry stand out. I’m a Nepali and I’d like to associate myself as a cinephile having been exposed to world cinema and this is type of stuff that makes me proud and aspire me to follow my passion to become a filmmaker. I haven’t watched many Nepali films and most movies I have watched were disappointing and hopeless to say but once in a while movie such as this one right here and Pashupati Prasad gives me hope. The movie was shot beautifully by that I mean world class, definitely work of an expert. Amazing performances by the actors, I wonder how many of them were professionals!! Filmmaker definitely knows what he/she is doing, can easily tell its a work of well versed filmmaker. Great reference to one of the most iconic scene from Taxi driver, amazingly done, I loved director’s take on it. Storytelling at its best, completely original and has a mass appeal to it. You could be from anywhere in this world and there is something for you to take away. It brings into our attention social issues like Untouchability, girl trafficking and subtle racism which many movies shies away from addressing. If we keep on making movies like this Oscars is not very far. 9/10, there’s always room for improvement.
Why Oscars ? I think Cannes, Venice or Berlin is more prestigious.
I agree 👍 the current stock of Nepali movies fades in comparison to the movie Karma for example. What beautiful characterization, editing, camera work, all excellent. We should collaborate on a project if you are interested.

One could say almost all of western movie making has gone downhill in that same 15 year period. If all film makers look to the west and market driven movie-making decisions, the artistic quality and overall content will be lacking. As a long ago former starving artist I say we all should see the need to fund creative, innovative young film makers.

Yes, Intention is the energy that results in an action. It is not the action that causes the karmic result, but the cause itself: the desire itself...the choice to perform the action. Karma just means "action" in sanscrit. The action, begins first with the intention. The act is the result. I only recently had a truly deeper insight into this. People say, "Well, thinking about doing something (anything negative or unethical) doesn't count if you don't do it." But, spiritually, the thought itself, if you dwell in it, is the 1st spark of intention, and creates it's own karma. That is why the practices to learn to control and purify our thoughts is crucial on the path. Hope this is helpful to someone. ❤

I think this movie shows us how Karma works:
Example 1 (Runaway Ani): The runaway Ani actually ran away from the nunnery, thus disrespecting it; only to fall in the hands of girl trafickers who sold them to some brothel. Now, she is trapped into a situation from where she can't come out even if she wants to.
Example 2 ( the Head Ani): The runaway ani ran away from the nunnery due strict and sometimes harsh treatment from the Head Ani (sorry I dont know the correct term). The Head Ani felt guilty about it and resorted to Tashi, gave him the money 2 lakhs to bring her back. That money was required after her death to perform prayers which would help her reincarnate.
Example 3 (Tashi): Tashi was a smuggler of goods and sometimes girls. He was told to bring back runaway ani because he knew the trafficking business well. When he met the runaway Ani, he deeply fell in love with her. He wanted her to leave prostitution and live the rest of with him, but she refused due to which he was deeply filled with sorrow. He used to sell girls, but now he is deeply sorrowed because of a sold girl.

I really enjoyed this movie for so many reasons. A rare chance to catch a glimpse to the lives of Buddhist nuns in Nepal, the beautiful sceneries, character development of our main character Ani Karma, and that this movie invites different interpretations. My take on it, Ani Karma learned human beings are complex creatures. Tashi was supposed to be a ruthless trafficker of girls but he turned out to be one capable of love so deep he became a savior for girls being trafficked and a Christian orphanage. The abbess was supposed to be one who can do no wrong but not only did she try to atone for her guilt of causing a young nun to run away by giving Tashi the money, but she is reincarnating to come back maybe to set right what she felt was done wrong. Ani Karma gave away the money to the orphanage because she truly felt the orphans should be given a chance in life. The money will be better used in this manner than for the Abbess’ special prayer. She had no idea until after her return she had spent the money exactly as to how the Abbess would have wanted her to. The donation to help the orphans probably relieve the Abbess’ guilt and help her consciousness more than the special prayers perhaps. Ani Karma also helped Tashi out. By giving Tashi a chance to return the money offered him for a job that was not completed, especially if the money was given to him to find the young nun, it probably helped brought a sense of relief and comfort to Tashi especially believing it was going to special prayers for the Abbess. Having experienced all this, I can see why Ani Karma is ready to take the next step. She already possess loving kindness and compassion, but Through a retreat, she can gain dharma, understanding and wisdom of Buddhism, to help lessen the many suffering in this world and ultimately, reach nirvana.

What a wonderful movie. Deeply touching. At the end of the movie, I was drowned in sorrow. I felt terribly sad, I do not know why. It touched me that Ani Karma resolved to go on a retreat. Going on retreat means facing much hardship, so much hardship that it feels like torment. Buddhist nuns are so very special people, kind hearted and compassionate. I might watch the movie again. Thank you very much for uploading this video. Now I need to think and ponder as never before, and think about the meaning and purpose of life.

If you ask some long time retreatants if there's anywhere they'd rather be in the world, you'll be surprised on how many will say no. Retreat goes much beyond its physical limits. It's probably the greatest journey we can ever make. 😊
When I went to Sikkim in 2007 I met many people. The competition for the best singer in India in India was going on that year and there was a contestant from northeastern India competing. Many young people were going to the streets to support their singer.
I visited north eastern India as part of a tour years ago. At a monastery a nun expressed her concern at my snuffles. (I have nasal allergies). I was so grateful for her concern for my snuffles!

@@elmatador1280 Thank you very much, El Matador, for sending me the link to view this lovely temple with the statue of the Compassionate One, or the Avalokiteshwara, as some Nepalese call him. I see that the people who manage this temple are engaged in planting more flowering plants around the temple. In three years all the empty spaces there would be filled with blooming plants, I suppose. I can visualize it as I sit here. There seems to be a scarcity of water there, on top of the small mountain. I will try to visit this place the next time I visit India. At each of my visits to India, I stay for eight months or so. Thank you very much, again.

A wonderful film. The ending is perfect. A journey full of possible danger yet those I thought may harm the nun ended up being good people despite their guilty feelings. Character Tashi (Jampa Kalsang) is my mom's youngest brother. He's been in a few movies. Lungta (Windhorse), Himalaya or Caravan he's been an artist since I can remember. He's the coolest guy, was in a band in his younger days.

I spent a month trekking in Nepal back in 1986, and this brought a lot of reality back to my brain about how people survive.
What a lovely film. I think it speaks to all humans. Decisions we must make. The nun, Karma, was a courageous one. She went with her heart and gut. What a fantastic film. Loved the ashram, too. Some day I hope to get to Nepal. I want to visit India, Nepal, and Tibet.

Namaste to all. I am another who was given the gift of this movie suggestion in my TH-cam feed and am blessed to have viewed it. I typically am at my sewing machine when watching movies but had to stop and pay full attention to the subtitles. Best investment in 2 hours I have spent in a long time. I am just beginning a path on the Dharma and am able to understand many of the things I watched in the movie and why they were included (on a basic level). I am sad that there are so many comments from a less-than-positive perspective on the movie: the pacing, the plot, the acting/editing, etc. Here's what I saw: the compassion the nuns had for their abbess, the stunning scenery of the country in which the nunnery was set, the gorgeous and talented craftsmanship of the instruments and thangkas and statues, the simple beauty of the people's faces, the authenticity of simply being present when one human passes this mortal coil and the self-awareness of the abbess when it was her time to be reborn; Karma's child-like curiosity at the humming of the power pole; the kindness of Karma as she helps the older lady across the bridge with the apple basket; the kindness of strangers sharing water with the nuns; the sheer bravery and courage of Karma to go from an isolated nunnery to a big city to chase a person of questionable repute; Tashi trying to sow good karmic seeds to purify negative karma from his present or past life; and the fun the actors had based on the outtakes at the end. I do have a question about why Karma sold an amulet and handled money as well as why Sonam was wearing a bracelet and had a wad of cash; I thought personal jewelry was not allowed nor are monastics allowed to touch money (can anyone help me on this one?). I'm also still a bit lost as to who that young nun was that ran away and if she was ever found. Blessings to those who were involved with this amazing film. May all have health and happiness in 2023.
Karma has reached self-transcendence. I so love this film from Nepal. Congrats to its maker and casts. best regards from the Philippines.

Very cool to watch a movie about Buddhist monks but without the stereotypes that westerners fantasize about so much about their lives. They are ordinary people who live joys and sorrows like everyone else. Beautiful film. Congratulations!

I'm a Buddhist.We have no many films made on Buddhist philosophy. This is interesting film.This says the reality of samsara. If we are not aware and care on what we are going to do we will be the victims of the hardest tide of samsara .It drags,shakes, and thrashes and pulls all of us to end less different impermanent destinations.

This is a very inspiring movie and I love the nun Karma. Her heart is pure and she does march to the sounds of her own drums. That is courage which many of us lacks. Will watch it again and again.
Excellent film with a powerful message. The "retreat" is a 3 year retreat making Karma into a Lama . Thoroughly enjoyed the film, thanks!

This may sound odd, but it's a sincere compliment of admiration: Except for what was onscreen when they went to the cinema, none of this movie looked at all like acting! (PS: Glad they included the outtakes, nice reality check :)

I respect all the religion as well as people but i was so passionated in buddhism when i was in my teen age .i do believe in karma and one of my friend Tnangshi ghale used to taught me about kindness,humanity and the power of god ..i always admire her words which belongs a lot in buddhism..anyway perfect movie .thank you for this movie..nuns are so natural..they act so simply,realastic and wonderful job..
