Turin, Italy, September 30, 2018 - USA picked up the bronze medal of the 2018 FIVB Men's World Championship with a thrilling 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 32-30, 25-19) win over Serbia at Turin's Pala Alpitour, just ahead of the grand final featuring Brazil and Poland.
It is the second bronze for USA in the history of the World Championship after that of 1994. USA have one world title to their name, dating from 1986.
The third set score of 32-30 ties the previous high of this tournament from the Japan v Argentina game 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 30-32, 25-20, 15-13) on 18 September in Florence. The all-time high in the World Championships is 40-38 from the Tunisia v Puerto Rico game, 3-2 (38-40, 28-26, 16-25, 25-22, 15-11), in 2006.
Matt Anderson was the ace in coach John Speraw's sleeve to catch the bronze: an outstanding 29 points allowed USA to eventually win after losing a thrilling first set, and go home with a prestigious consolation prize.
Team USA had a much longer night than Serbia on Saturday, and needed to administrate the remaining bits of energy in order to retrieve their consistency, while the Balkan side had more time to regroup - but also to regret.
Nemanja Petric for Marko Ivovic was coach Nikola Grbic's only change in the starting six, while Speraw picked Daniel McDonnell in David Smith's place: veteran in, veteran out.
The two teams chased the bronze with true grit, with an endless third set as the turning point of the match: Anderson was decisive, scoring 11 of the 32 points the Americans needed to force Serbia to bend the knee.
Paradoxally, the Americans were the freshest entering the fourth and decisive set, simply dominated, and closed by a serve fault by Drazen Luburic - an unfair ending for Serbia's backup opposite, able to score 12 points in a convincing offensive effort (58% attack with neither errors or killer blocks conceded).

That 32-30 score set was nerve-wracking. I was at the edge of my seat and the set seemed to go on forever. Kudos to both teams for keeping their cool. Also, Christenson's two dumps were brilliant.

I feel sorry for team USA, all through years they ended up being in the third place (its like, they mastered being bronze medalist). But the good thing is that, they are strong contender. I hope before anderson and holt retired, they get a gold medal.

@@loganmuller262 Don't know yet, cause I think this game just made it worse. If you watch the whole match, you'll see that soon after he goes to serve after the point at 2:50, he points at his shoulder. He then comes back in because Langlois can't pass for his life and isn't tuned into the team's rhythm. I don't know what the injury is, but if I had to guess it would be a torn rotator cuff or just tendinitis in his shoulder acting up. If it's a torn rotator cuff he'll be not playing much for much of this year, because a torn rotator cuff takes around 6 weeks to recover if he gets surgery, but since he's still playing I'm sure it's just tendinitis which can be solved by physical therapy and rest, and will recover in, funnily enough, 6 weeks.
It would be better without the annoying music.
Andersen, Holt, Sander, Russel, Mikach is the best players.

bronze is better than nothing. in men's volleyball all are very good and strong but someone has to lose and another has to win and it so happen Poland is much stronger than Brazil.

Get very lucky? They won 3:0 with Iran, defeated host Bulgarian, twice 3:0 Serbia, devastated Italy when it mattered 25-14 in the first set, won final with BRAZIL in straight sets 3:0 leading the whole match, and they were able to eliminate USA who was playing actually fantastic match by using TWO players in attack - Kurek and Kubiak. Like seriously, in whole 4th and 5th sets Śliwka (second OH) didn't get even ONE ball xD
You know I could in some way agree with you that "they were lucky" if they lost to Brazil next day, but no, they played absolutely amazing and didn't give them any chance!
They were the best when it MATTERED and they were smart enough to use their bench - both in easier matches to give 1st team some rest, and to change someone from first six who was not doing very well - something Speraw was afraid to do. Anderson had bad moment? No matter, he stays. The same for Russell. In Poland? Szalpuk had problem? Śliwka is coming.
@@MoniiKaq Can't blame Speraw for letting players get into a rhythm. It's 2 completely different coaching styles. Eastern European teams are known to pull players whenever they are not doing well, just look at Russia in 2012 versus Brazil where the captain Khtey was pulled a few points into the game and Grankin was also subbed for Butko within a few points. Most teams allow players to get into a rhythm because whats the point of pulling a player who you knows is a slow starter before he even gets started. And plus the US was missing a large part of their bench because college volleyball has started again and DeFalco, Ensing, Jendryk, and B. Sander. Plus Poland was lucky that their players clicked when they did, because they were clearly not projected to even make it to the semi's with how they were playing in the beginning rounds. It was lucky that Kurek and Kubiak were able to pull the team on their back without choking like they've been known to do before this tournament. So yes Poland was lucky that everything fell into place when it did, no sooner or later.
Atanasijević is probably the most overrated player atm.
