This strict male/female paradigm is so simple...yet we place so much value in this false coin. Being well adjusted and loving is much more of a touch stone in this limited existence. Homosexuality has been here since the dinosaurs...why do we wish to judge and demonize the "other" trope! Thanks Mr. Cook for your nostalgic backstory....and positive celebration. Kudos!..and well wishes for the both of you.
I deeply respect this man's integrity, character and values. Wishing him and his husband a long life filled with health, laughter and love. "All is well, all is well......"
How many million of us from Dwight's generation (I'm 71) just tried and tried to be the best little boys in the world but never, ever were able to drive away our sexual desire for men, even to getting married-maybe then God will change us! So much emotional damage done to ourselves and everyone in our lives. And so many years, decades, even, wasted trying to change ourselves.
How many overcame and Got over it and had a wife and children and grandchildren and at the end of their life were incredibly grateful that they did not go into the homosexual lifestyle?
What an amazing story! There's just something about the stories of people who were raised in the Mormon religion and come out as gay - their narratives are so relatable and attention-capturing.
I was raised by catholic parents, whose preaching was about love and respect. I think they were that open-minded because they were Brazilian people, whose families weren’t strict. My parents believed that God is love. And, if He is love, He embraces everyone, no matter their sexuality, gender, color, etc. So,because of it, I wasn’t oppressed. The other way around. I look back and thank every single second for having had those amazing and wonderful parents.
I have the same. Catholic parents. Love the church because it taught me about love and how to be close to Jesus. I hate when Mormons send missionaries to Catholic countries. They don't know what they are trying to pull people away from. Like this guy though. He seems so sweet and kind. His daughters are beautiful.
The Mormans have an enormous amount to answer for. I was a Baptist Pastor and went through 13 years of reparative therapy including electronic shock therapy. However it did prove medically that I am gay and that I was born gay. God creates some people gay and it is absolutely fine. The whole medical profession declassified homosexuality as an illness 50 years ago in 1973.
As horrific as your story is, I’m glad you survived the pressure to share it with us today. If you ever wanted to share it as a video archive, just let me know.
I have a simple rule for living, "Either you help people, or you hurt people, or you don't care." No discussions about angels dancing on the head of a pin, immaculate conception, prophets, etc.
My husband grew up in the Mormon faith and we are married I am a man as well as you can see imagine that dynamic when you're also a person of color on African-American and he's Caucasian and he grew up in Wyoming and now we both live in Idaho
Strange thing is Our next door neighbors on our right side on the space coast of Fla were Mormon and they were my favorite neighbors. and after they found out I was gay, nothing changed
I'm not sure what the most current official policy of Mormon Church is when it comes to the LGBTQ community. I'm sure your neighbors didn't learn that from their church. It probably came from understanding how to be a decent human being. Glad you had this positive experience from your favorite neighbors. Most LGBTQ people who actually grew up in those type of communities, have some dark stories to tell unfortunately.
Reparative Therapy... so this is similar to conversion therapy? Glad you found happiness. Just wondering are you still a member of the Church or left it? Would be interesting to know. I am not Mormon but Anglican (Anglo-Catholic).
I believe this particular reparative therapy was far more aggressive than your average ‘conversion therapy’. From what I remember, he told me that at some point he completely left the church. The harm and suffering caused by this whole ideology is mind boggling. It pushed people to take extreme measures. Maybe it still does?
I don’t know how religion continues to persist. I would reject anything that tried to create a wedge between my child or tried to make them feel bad about themselves.
You know how many times I've come across people who were kicked out as a teen, and to this day there's been no real communication with the family they left behind? It's the most disgusting form of "LOVE". Let's not forget those who took their own lives because of religious shame.

Your ceremony sounded like ours - $100 for the Justice of the Peace and I think $40 for the license. Went to Pizza Hut for dinner LOL

This person's remark validates the fact that H/S is triggered by a mistaken teaching (mormonism), not biological nor a natural diversity.

That was in the film Latterdays - the reparative therapy. The character was from Idaho too.
Thanks for the tip. Gotta watch that movie.
