What Using a Public Bath in Japan is Like! | TOKYO SENTO

  • Today I visited 3 different public baths in Tokyo, Japan! Public baths are known as sento in Japanese, and they've existed in Japan since the 8th century. If you have tattoos and are looking for a relaxing bathing experience similar to an onsen, you'll be happy to know that all 3 of these Tokyo sento are tattoo-friendly 😌

Just gonna pin this up here since lots of people are asking about it:
Tattoos are allowed in all 3 of these sento! Some sento may be stricter on tattoos so be sure to check, but it seems that lots of baths/onsen are relaxing their policies in order to accommodate foreign visitors with the olympics nearing :) And again, in case you missed it, don't wear a towel/bathing suit like me - that's just for filming!

I don't know, I think even the Victoria's Secret model will probably be feeling a bit shy and embarrassed, being naked around a bunch of other people - it puts you on the same playing level. Every time I've gone to onsen, the hardest part is taking your clothes off, but once you do, everything just sorta continues like normal, like as if you had your clothes on. I've gone with all the students at my school, and everyone just kinda chats like normal, and no one's really looking at each other - I guess you can't compare your bodies when you're trying hard to make sure your eyes stay at everyone's eye level lol. But I think the phrase came from back in the day when people of status would wear very expensive kimono, but even if you weren't wealthy and didn't have those status symbols, it wouldn't matter because no one's wearing them. I guess the same goes for people these days, a rich businessman might arrive in a suit, but he's equal to the person who arrived in a hand-me-down t-shirt for the duration of the bath. :)

Excellent video of Japanese sento. At least as far back as the 1980's, every neighborhood had a sento bathhouse. Many of the low-rent single-room apartments did not have a bath or shower. There were many low-rent single-room apartments and i lived in one of them as a student. The sento bathhouse was where the neighbors got together to discuss neighborhood things and just socialize. Often, we would meet neighbors at the sento and go out for dinner or a beer together after the sento. Like my neighbors, I would wear my wool kimono to the sento in winter and my cotton yukata or jimbei clothes in summer..with wooden clog "Geta" shoes. Not everybody wore those traditional clothes, but lots of people did and it didn't seem odd. The cost in the early 1980s was 210 yen. I remember the fragrances of the soaps and hot water when you entered the sento entrance and put your shoes in the wooden boxes. Everybody knew everybody. In those days, many sento heated the water with wood from discarded building materials. You could find neighborhood sento by looking for the tall chimneys with the "Yu" logo painted on it that stood higher than most of the houses and buildings. Every neighborhood had sento and if you had a bicycle, you could easily explore many sento near your own apartment. Sento started to disappear in the 1990s and few remain today.

I find, for all its modesty and rules, Japan's Sentos and Onsen are very open and accepting of nudity. Viewing it as a way for everyone to be seen as equal rather than a negative or bad thing.
While I might be nervous trying this out, I think, if I ever make it Japan I might make myself go to one of these just for the experience. Thanks Sharla !!

The Kawaii Planet just make sure to use soap and water to scrub down your body before going in the water - she forgot to mention that in the video and local people will be upset. Everyone uses the same water in the baths so it's very important to get clean using soap, not just water alone like she showed in the video. Hair needs to be up and away from water as well - she had her hair up in the video but also forgot to mention that it's a cultural requirement!

It makes a lot of sense to make bathing areas a place of community. It's in our instinct to bond over hygiene, and-like it's stated in the video-everyone is more equal when they're naked. Society puts a lot of pressure on individuals to present themselves in certain ways, so it's just feels a lot more honest to not rely on trinkets and clothing to present a status. Even if you don't look amazing when everything is off, there's a certain confidence and honesty that comes with doing it anyway. I mean, it's not (supposed to be) a place where you check people out, so it comes down to respect.

I knew some sento still existed, but I didn't think it would be so many! I'll definitely want to go! And thanks for putting in the comments about tattoos. It's good to know that these three are fine with tattoos(knew they had to be, to allow you in! XD), so I'll definitely do my research first when looking into sento. Thanks so much for this fun and informative video! ^.^ I wish there were sento here... Maybe if I'd been exposed to this growing up, I wouldn't have so much discomfort and dysphoria, in relation to my body(I suffer from gender dysphoria bouts, though nowhere near as strong as they used to be, and have gotten better since coming out as non binary. ^.^)

Between Sharla In Japan, Simon and Martina, and the other channels I watch, it's apparent that many Bath Houses / Onsen are having to accept some degree of tattoos with the changing of their culture. They keep mentioning how more are changing their policies to be more accepting, so it'll probably snowball quickly until only a few remain that try to stay more conservative. I get that they did it to avoid Gang (yakuza) issues, but that can't be strictly adhered to if you want to keep businesses running as the culture changes.

Seattle Sheikah if you go make sure to use soap & water to shower off before the baths, in the video she only used water and forgot to mention that everyone expects you to be squeaky clean before going in the sentos baths. Just a heads up so you don't offend anyone! And make sure your hair doesn't touch the water!

Sento are public baths (ie, people go there to clean themselves), and are man-made, with usually tap water. Onsen are natural hot springs, people go there to relax and for health benefits, like going to a spa.

"Whats is the difference between sento and Onsen? Thanks"
      ==
Sentos are local business where you walk into regularly and use commonly available fuel to heat the water.
Onsens are resort where you visit by using trains and buses once in awhile, and where natural hot spring available.
But there are some exceptions, like Atami in Izu peninsula.
Atami used to have hot spring but because of convenient distance from Tokyo the town got so busy they built many business and soon the water had run out.
Atami as a hot spring resort is still in the business but no natural hot spring.

Regardless of the fact that people wash before entering the bath or not, human beings carry many bacteria that love to grow in warm environments, and that is spelling it out in a simple manner! As I said before, I love the sentiment but knowing what I know it isn't for me! Personal choice, personal opinion, but good on the hundreds of thousands that do enjoy sharing a bath with others!
