Scurlogue came to Hall Green in an 663mt Open race and was pitted against local champion Keem Rocket. I had a bit of 7/2 Keem. Keem led about 10 lengths down the back straight and I never had a worry...... until the last 100 mts! Scurlogue failed to get up by a neck, I won.... but I never bet against Scurlogue again! :-). I saw him run at Haringey when he came from an impossible position down the far side to win the race and spectators were applauding the greyhound as he caught them at the last bend and won by 10 lengths going away! Truly Tremendous!

Catford was a cracking stadium. You could stand at the bottom of the steps and the hounds would be at eye level, the sand would fly at you as they raced past, just don't stand at the finish line on the posh side as the bookies would shove you out of the way, that was their spot to see the winner. Those push on traps were replaced with ones that pivoted on a post and were swung onto the track by one person, but I think they kept one push on set for the eight bender races. Going there was like meeting family, the bookies, the regulars, bar staff, catering staff, we all knew each other.
All gone now, 2003 I think, even the Tote board went up in flames one night after it shut, funny how the 20th Century Society was due to visit the closed track that week with a view to preserve it. Now the land is all apartments, with some blocks named after trainers.

I loved Catford, was a regular once old enough to go. I used to go on Thursday evenings, and stand behind these 2 old fellas sat at a table. I used to love listening to their tales of Catford in the 'heyday' of greyhound racing.

I still go to Crayford from time to time, mainly in a group as a night out now. Used to tag along sometimes to Wimbledon, but hated it to be honest. Been Romford, Yarmouth, Hove a few times too.

Admittedly Bob was better over 6 and 8 bends but he could not stay 10 bends champ would have caught him over 888m thats why bobs trainer insisted on 700 2 dog with 6 dogs over 10 bends champ would have kept going bob never got any where near champs times in 10 bend trials hence why he never ran in one you could liken them to micheal Johnson and usain bolt over 100m bolt every time over 200 johnson could win but bolt still wins but over 400m johnson wins every time 6 8 10 bends is like this in my opinion

Contrary to mainstay view this dog was at best ungenuine & worst and outright dodgepot , he had " stopped chasing " at Walthamstow and Wembley. His racing card reflected that .The owner trainer Mr Peckham would ring the racing offices and try to place the dog in order to get easy reces. When put up against a real dog like Ballyregan Bob , he was not in the same league , He was placed well when he strung together 13 consecutive races , I saw him race over 30 times , he lost way more than he won - People sure do have rose tinted glasses when eulogise about this dog, who was regularly beaten by the pace merchants of the day - like Glenowen Queen , Silver mask ++. Of course the big question is where is his race card to be inspected to a true reflection of his career can be appreciated

Graham, I respect your knowledge, but not sure where you are getting your info from? According to Greyhound Data he won 34 of 41 races..... nowhere near the suggested "he lost more than he won". A number of track records over 8 bend distances also suggest he was very quick. Over 6 bends I do think Bob would have his measure, but take it to 8 bends and I think you have a different scenario. Both dogs deserve huge credit, and both were supreme at slighlty different distances.

i agree with Daniel mostly, the only trouble with him against Bob over 8 might be that bob would be gone early, the hare even further, and that mightve spelt trouble, i certainly look back on the champ verry fondly i have to say
