Boston Celtics survive OT scare from Detroit Pistons thanks to Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White

  • The Celtics started about as terribly as you can imagine, putting forth one of their worst quarters of the season, earning boos from the TD Garden crowd. But they turned it around in the third quarter, survived the fourth, and won it in overtime. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal is at the Garden with reaction, including how Porzingis and White were the heroes, Jayson Tatum did other things even though his shooting still stinks, and how Joe Mazzulla's message about mentality is put to the test in this game.

Lol you can blame John all you want but reality is we should beat this team 98 times out of 100. If you havent noticed over the past few years, the celtics choke every "easy" game because they don't take it seriously and after watching the same thing repeat itself over and over again, I don't think they'll ever learn. They play to their opponents skill level and rarely turn it up and play to their full potential. Just clearly isn't motivating enough for them.

@@Barry-Strange well I think John has precisely explained the circumstances why this game haven't been an easy walk for Celtics. And that's exactly what happen. Such games at home against hard motivated teams like Pistons after winning road tour are almost "mission impossible". Glad to see that Celt's find their motivation in second half. This kind of wins are building the necessary winner spirit for team. Go for B#18

Feels like they really missed brown’s offensive mentality in this one. He’s the one that leads the charge in transition and pace and attack mentality (along with white) and there was a stark difference in the temperament of the offense without him out there in the first half.
This game is a coaches dream in that there is a huge learning lesson, the way they won proves why he’s basically right, and they still got a win. It’s also a good game for tatum to eat a little humble pie too - if you want to rub that slow, iso heavy, tough shot making offense… we’ll you might lose to teams like the pistons.

this is a "bad" win. embarrassing for the C's but i'm glad they pulled it out. 5 takeaways:
    1. mazzula returning to not calling timeouts again in the 1st half. he let detroit build up a lead. turns out we had a wasted timeout in regulation that should've been used earlier. refused to challenge plays too like that KP block.
    2. i was so glad when we finally stopped going to JT sidestep 3s and went into KP post-ups at the nail. JT should learn to recognize when his 3s arent falling and go to his post-up/drives instead. i cringed everytime JT shot a 3. it was marcus smart-esque. 2/11 from 3 is terrible.
    3. they should've gone to KP earlier. detroit kept putting a guard or wing on him like ivey, bogdanovic, knox, livers, etc. if we took advantage earlier we could've closed this in regulation. this was because we played double big and detroit put duren on al/queta.
    4. d.white is an all-star. no one i trust more to make decisions in a close game, when the pistons were ahead or to close quarters. yes over the Js. he's the best decision maker on the team. slow start for him this game but i had no doubt he'd pick it up in the 2nd half.
    5. being outrebounded surprised me. we played double big alot last night and detroit played single big. lots of ball watching/no boxing out from d.white, hauser and tatum. i also saw tatum had the ball at his feet and refused to dive to get it so detroit got the ball back.
a win is a win. i expect al to sit tom. hopefully JB is back. Beat toronto! Let's go C's!

And that was the turnaround to putting the game away. We looked tired or lazy. Every time they quit moving around they couldn't make a basket. They were standing around , passing back and forth. The shot clock would wind all the way down and shots just weren't going down. PP couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. It was pitiful looking. Glad they turned it around in the 2nd half.

This confirmed to me that teams wake up for the Celtics. We have a target on our backs based on our history. They might as well have a 27 game win streak, when you face the best, you mentally prepare for that more, you might work on their shots in advance and try to make a statement, if they beat the Celtics, it says that they can hang with the best. When you’re our building, it ignites a fire that you can’t get other places. Media is licking their chops, the best vs the worst, so many people wanted to see Goliath go down with a biblical loss…..the NBA won last cuz it showed that even the worst close out team in history, can still bring the best down on any given night, mostly depending on the situation. It’s The NBA, and all these guys starting on the worst team would still crush/run clinic on the casual D-1 college player in every facet of the game. The margin in the NBA is smaller than most realize, that’s why I watch every game, no win is a guarentee

The worst play in the NBA is when you miss a 3-ball, the defense secures the O-bound, and turns it into 3 points on the other end, and if that shooter gets fouled on a 3, and makes the free throw, that's equivalent to a touchdown in football - a 7-point swing. John, I HATE shooting 50 or more 3s in a game since a larger percentage of them basically turn into turnovers.
