  • Steve Morris, who was Red 9 in the Royal Air Force's aerobatic display team, is hoping to start a new career in a commercial airline!
    While he "loved every single moment" in the RAF, he says he is excited about this next step in his career.
    Kirstie Chambers (@Kirstie_MarieC) went to meet him.

      @@clipz4238 A civilian plane just needs to take off point in the right direction and land. A fighter pilot is processing hundreds of packets of information a second , often hugging the ground, avoiding radar, dodging Sam sites and his or her end point is a bombing run or dog fight. They are constantly changing their fight path, coordinating with their assets, reviewing risks and trying to get on target while often flying their aircraft close to its limits while keeping it in one piece . In the air force its it no surprise only the top students move to fast jets, while the rest go to cargo planes. This guy will breeze past the tests to become a commercial pilot. Its a thousand times easier than what he did in fast jets. In commercial flying the job is to fly the plane. In fast jets the role is not to fly, but to turn a flying machine into a weapon. That is why so few become fighter pilots.

    I'm a late career changer, started on the 737, not from the military though. In the last 13 years many of my First Officers have come from the military. You name it, RAF, Fleet Air Arm, US Army, US Air Force, Marines, Italian Air Force, Philippine Air Force, Cambodian Air Force, RAAF. They have flown everything from AMX, Tornado, Harrier, F18, F16, Mig 21, F5, Kiowa. The list is endless. To a man, they are he best. It is an amazing career.

    In answer to the question, definitely yes. But so can the lowest scribbly or blankets stacker. I’ll admit I don’t know Steve but my experience of flying with single seat RAF pilots (including former Red Arrows pilots), with three major exceptions, is that they are a pain in the arse. They can all fly and fly well, but so can most people. In my opinion, they have a major shortcoming: dealing with those they believe are inferior to them, low status people and those who make mistakes. When things start going wrong or the pressure mounts then this becomes a problem as they revert to type and start flying a multi-crew aircraft single pilot. Give me the choice and I’ll fly with former multi-crew transport or rotary wing type. There’s also more room in the cockpit as you don’t have to accommodate their ego.

    I've often heard it said that commercial airlines are reluctant to employ former fighter pilots as they are too easily bored. The claim is that every moment of being a fighter pilot is filled with excitement and therefore they can't fit into being a long-haul commercial pilot which, more often than not, means sitting for maybe 8 hours monitoring flight instruments. Personally, I don't accept this view as these aces are still airborne and earning a good salary. Many of us have to adjust to a change in life.

Check and Training Captains would love to be 'Trip and Trapping' Captains to assert their civilian experience dominance. I can not see him enjoying his time as a First Officer Co-Pilot role under those that only made it in civvie street. Good luck and God Speed, your humility and intelligence will serve you well.

    • @lewiscurrie4979
      @lewiscurrie4979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just because your a military pilot doesn’t instantly qualify you to fly an airliner, it’s not as simple as just switching over, there are a lot of legal requirements to become a commercial pilot.
      I don’t know all the technicalities of transferring from military to commercial, as I’m doing it the normal way of training without being in the military. But he still would need to get his ATPL, CPL and other civilian pilot licences. He should breeze through most ATPL subjects without issue I’d imagine, since majority of it is pretty much universal to all pilots no matter what you fly, except from a couple subjects that are very commercial aviation focussed. I’d imagine the footage of him flying the DA-42 was him getting used to it so he could do his flight portion of his CPL licence.

      The co-pilot is not just there to help the captain; they need to be a fully qualified (for that specific type of aircraft and right area (civilian vs. military)) pilot. They aren't really there to learn (as they should already have mastered the basics of the type), but rather just get experience (and of course not every pilot being able to be a captain).
      Co-pilots are actually often the ones doing the actual flying too, though of course it is a joint job.
