I've kept my fragrances in a closed dresser in my bedroom with blackout curtains, where in the summer I'm using AC set at 80-82, rest of the year, and winter, 72-78 (I prefer to be a little warm than a little cold) and Ive never had an issue in the last 8 years Ive been collecting, with my temps fluctuating between seasons, from mid 70s to low 80s. Never had one go bad yet, and my oldest 3 are now 8 years old.
Guys it's not that hard! Just keep your fragrances at room temperature in a dark cupboard (most cupboards unless they have lights inside). I keep my fragrances in their original boxes and just take them out when I want to use them. That way not much heat or air can get to them. On top of that, always keep the cap on and you will see your perfumes lasting until they run out! If you must display them (which I do not recommend), keep them in a room with a temperature between 45 and 65 degree F. Make sure there is very little to no fluctuation of the temperature. Make sure all of the fragrances on display have their caps on and keep them away from sunlight. The room must not be humid and avoid having much water vapor in the air. As well as this, keep the fragrances at a constant temperature. Therefore, no one should store fragrances at all in the bathroom. I still do not recommend this but it should help preserve the life of your fragrances if you do choose to display them.
This video actually helped me a lot. I used to store mine in the bathroom above the sink. No cupboards no nothing and they were pretty exposed to temp fluctuations. From now on, I'll store them in a drawer in my room which is dark, cool and no sunlight can get to it. Thanks man!
A wine seller told me a way they keep oxygen out of wine is to lay them flat so the wine blocks air from getting in thru the cork, I think this can work with colognes as well if you lay them flat the cologne will prevent air from getting in from the top if you don't have a cap or have a tester, Closet is a bad place to store if you live in hot climates. It gets very hot in there.
Great subject for discussion. I own over 600 fragrances and I take every precaution with regards to their upkeep. I store mine in my bedroom which has blackout curtains that are always closed. I keep the room at 70 degrees year round, and I always have a fan on. I always keep my fragrances in their boxes. I like your idea of a wine refrigerator, I am going to have to look into that. Great video.
Great tips. And I love how you have the topics listed and the time in which you speak on them listed in the show more info area. If all videos had that we can get right to the information and learn a lot quicker lol. Big up. Never thought I'd be so interested in cologne / fragrance after having just started lol
I agree with the point about the refrigeration of fragrance you mention in the video. I once bought a refrigerated fragrance (XS by Paco Rabanne), after about a month at my house which is not refrigerated. The scent went bad.
Excellent video, Cody. This is a TOP 5 fragrance video in my opinion. It took me years of damaging my fragrances before figuring this out. Thanks for bringing this topic to light... LOL!!
great tips. well said.. Im not sure I totally agree with the cap thing. I believe the air inside the tube is already in almost a vacuumed state.. which gives you the suction. I don't think any air is really getting inside through the sprayer.. i might be wrong, but that is my opinion. I hear so much stuff about this topic. Some people say its better cold, some say its better room temp.. but i think ur recommendations are sound and probably the middle of the road is the best bet.
My mom liked to showcase her perfume in the open on her bathroom counter. It's a clear spicebomb perfume and there's a window on the right of the bathroom where the bathtub and sunlight gets in and of course the shower where alot of fast changes in the temp and everytime you shower your bathroom heats up and fogs up then your bottle has alot of sweat on it. I keep my collection in my drawer now and i make sure my room doesn't over heat in the summer.
Great video Doc, as always! Love your reviews. I keep my frags in a file cabinet in the boxes where the direct sunlight never hits the room. The temp in the room stays about 68 degrees year round, never had a frag go bad. Keep up the good work.
When I researched this in the past, I read on multiple sites that sprayers are air tight, that a cap doesn't make a difference. I'm not saying that you're incorrect, but who knows if this has actually been tested or whatnot.
Ideal temps are 40*F for pure citruses and 50*F for the majority of all others. The $80 Black & Decker 2.7 keeps the 47*F on the lowest setting, best choice most likely below $100. That being said i found some 2ml samples from about 7 years ago when i was visiting parents, were kept in an attic, exposed to extreme heat and cold, and they still smell just as good as the properly stored 1.7.
I used to work nights so I have backout curtins under my normal curtins... No light getting in my room... Year round house is between 68F-70F... So... I just leave them out on my dresser on a large tray... My wife's collection is also sitting out on her dresser on a tray... I do use covered lamps in the room for the most part as well but I've always assumed it was UV Light from the Sun that messed up your juice and not a common light bulb though... Great info and video as always man... ^_^
The Montale Bottles are arguably the best on the market for storage. The bottle casing is perfect... no light..also helps keep it at the proper temp. Though like you.. i wish it had a cap.
Just an update, I have a bottle of Guerlain Heritage which is too tall to fit in either of the coolers so I got a ceramic cookie jar that has a lid with a rubberized seal. I was going to put a towel down inside and then put 3- 4 bottles inside. As a kid I kept going to the cookie jar so now I can continue as an adult :-)
Great review, i use a black & decker 2.7 fridge from walmart, on the lowest setting it keeps everything at 47*F. I have a 5ml decant of each of my frags i keep in a cupboard so i can grab on the way out the door. Fridge runs about $80 from walmart easily holds 45+ frags, plastic 5ml atomizers from ebay about $12 for 20.
I had my fragrances in a fridge and a bottle of Burberry Touch went bad in less than a year. I moved them all to a bookshelf in my room, where I always have the blinds drawn and light-blocking curtains closed (so it's pitch black). Haven't had any problems since.
I have a bottle of Eternity, Obsession and Tommy from the late 90's I kept on my desk but blocked from the sun and temperatures between 83 and 65 degrees. I just sprayed it on some paper today this morning and they all smelled like they were supposed to. The Tommy and Eternity weren't quite as strong as they were 20 years ago but still pretty good. But the Obsession was Strong!! I then smelled the papers 10 hours later, I could still smell The Tommy and Eternity a little bit but the Obsession was still Strong!!! that cologne is a beast!!! I must have gotten a really good batch!! HAHAHA Incredible!!
Man I had a few of my cold weather frags in my fridge. Took them out when I saw the temps in the fridge was zero degrees C. The are slowly being brought up to room temp as they are in a lunch bag. Thanks for the tip.
I would buy that take that it "SHOULD" be airtight. I don't think its a vacuumed state though. Ultimately I don't think its that big of a deal not to have a cap
I just got schooled! In fragrances 101 this was great information I was totaly oblivious too, I own a vanity cabinet but will be investing to upgrade into a wine cooler. New sub👍 2019
There's a post on basenotes titled 'Major Cologne Storage Warning' in which someone says they were advised by L'Osmothéque ("a Versailles-based institution dedicated to the preservation of perfumes and perfume history") to store their fragrances in the fridge, so maybe TOO cold is bad, but fridge cold isn't bad.
Fleck It depends at what temperature you store it at. Fridge , wine cooler , freezer is all relative... people tend to keep their fridges at different temperature ranges but that is correct. TOO cold is bad, but you want it cool.. which is why I always tell people think wine cooler. Chilled, not cold.
dracdoc Cool :) I just won an awesome little Sunbeam SCN08SHCBV wine cooler on eBay so I have nice a place to guard my fragrances from the harsh summer heat here in SoCal. Totally ready to start buying those big name frags now.
Excellent video! Thanks for all the help. Could you PM me the make and model of the fridge you have. Or any suggestions of where to buy a good fridge for a fairly good price.
Doc is hardcore. I've been into cologne ane I enjoy smelling good if not great. My town has 1 walmart. That's all. I've tried 2 so far that have been reviewed here and they worked out almost exactly as expressed. Thanks Drac
I don't think I'm ready to make the leap to a $200 wine cooler frig but I do keep mine in non-electric plastic picnic coolers. I have a Coleman 24 Can Party Stacker™ Cooler for most of them plus keep them in their boxes and then a smaller plastic 6-can cooler for the dozen that I'm currently using and then I rotate them every couple of weeks. Does that sound like a good way to keep them?
Thanks, as a chemical engineer I know for a fact that the chemical composition and integrity of a fluid changes with time, temperature, light, dirt and contamination. Because of the way scents are bottled, dirt and contamination shouldn't be an issue.
dude ur so rite about the air thing i have two bottles that dont smell the same anymore one is d&g the one which i have lost the cap to and it smells like shit now and my other bottle is jpg which almost smells like shit but as we all know that doesnt even come with a cap
I kept mine in my bathroom but quickly stored them in my dresser or drawer. Room temperature and hope it's not too warm. My average temp is around 75°F and I'm trying to get that down.
@dracdoc, I have a question, live in Texas and I leave the air on in the summer months and i have a walk in closet but it tends to get a little warm in there. I am starting my collection back when I just to know where would be a good place. Right now I have them on my dresser in their original boxes and room is pretty much dark but in a minute I won't be able to store on my dresser, what suggestions do you have for me. And by the way I say your video review on the Terre D'Hermes and I went out and got a bottle and I must say that I was very impressed.
I have abt 44 bottles on my dresser but as my collection grows I will look into purchasing a wine cooler. My bedroom is constantly between 60 to 65 degrees. There is no direct sunlight that's getting to the frags and I have thick sunlight blocking curtains. I hardly use the bedroom lights. Only the light frm the television hits the frags and I think that's not a problem.
Hey, Cody, are you actually aware that it is not only direct sunlight, but also electrical lights that are detrimental to fragrances over time?! Any ideas of yours on how to bypass that?.. Admittedly, you've got all well organized and genty positioned, though those perfume bottles are still exposed to internal lighting, aren’t they? P.S. Thanks for all the great work you’re doing. Your channel is by far one of the most compelling to watch perfumewise.
it's easy througout the winter but how about the summer when it's hot? i don't have air conditioner and it can sometimes get like 20-25 degrees celsius inside?
Amazingly useful information. Thanks for sharing. I am so envious of your collection. Do you have EDT's dating back to 10+ years? Just want to know the longevity of EDT's in case they are stored they way you've mentioned.
Just put a little piece of tape over the sprayer on the Mugler bottles. That's if you're not using them and they're just apart of a collection. Even when you do want to use them, just take the tape off.
Really great collection bro. some good tips as well. you've really grown as a reviewer and I look forward to all your vids and new material that you'll bring to the fragcomm
Do you think changing the temperature from 68.36 F to 66.56 F concider as a bad temperature fluctuation for my fragrances storage? It doesn't happen very offen but the temperature changes 1 to 2 degrees fahrenheit. I wonder if i should be concerned or am fine with this fluctuation. Happy New Year! 🎄 My greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Is it a good idea to buy a small fan that keeps the temperature around the bottles cool? I really hope you can answer me since I am one step away from ordering a fan on amazon. Thanks,
Do you have any Yves Rocher bottles? They aren't too expensive and their bottles are very nice. Hoggar is very good though I find the rest have green, ivy or rosemary notes that aren't my favourite but others might enjoy them.
I just got UltraMale for Christmas. It was inna guest bedroom and it was around 8 - 10 degrees Celsius in there and the fragrance box is an Aluminum Can and the bottle is glass (Jean Paul Gaultier). I'm worried I ruined it and when I get back home from my family gathering I plan to exchange it for another bottle. Is this unnecessary?
two spots i been known to put colognes is in a backpack when walking to work and medicine cabinet in the bathroom but in the box both cases is that a something i shouldn't do and why?
I live in canada B.C. and keep all my fragrances in the original boxes they came in. In a drawr and I keep my thermostat at 0 all year round. I like cold. Is this ideal. Please let me know other than that. Love your vids. 👍
Bro i have to know where you got your fragrance cooler! I just started collecting fragrances a couple months ago and i just ran into this video. Thank you for saving my fragrances!!! I had no idea that fragrances could go bad if not stored properly. I hope you can tell me where you got that really nice fragrance cooler!
Hey Cody, if i can buy a good mini fridge that can be changed from 36 to 65 fahrenheit, is it a good alternative instead of investing in a wine cooler?
I have a fragrance collection as well that I keep safe in my closet. However, I would like to know how you feel about keeping them in their original gift sets box.
Thanks for another great review. Any particular reason you do not keep your fragrances in their original boxes? thanks again. Appreciate all the invaluable insights.
After watching this, I moved my fragrances that are stored in a chest from my open room to my walk in closet. I feel it will lessen the light. Good idea, or will it make no real difference? Also, my room is around 70 degrees most days due to heating/cooling throughout the house.
Question. Do you keep your frags in any type of order? I see people keeping there houses with each other. And others with what type of frag like ouds, sports, aquatic, ect. Ect.
I keep my fragrances in a 3x10 closet. Its always cool because i dont heat it during the winter. My questions is, since i have to turn on the light everytime, will the light from the bulb cause any fragrances to go bad?
My window faces north with trees I have a blue storage box, my cat sits on to look out the window so I think I'm perty good I sometimes put a camping blue ice bottle [I don't low what they're called.] in with the colognes I've a few and buying more so I worry about time. I've a 1.7 of Avon I use about q 3 weeks and have had for over a year. SOTD Animale .
great vid, very thorough compared to alot of youtubers :D looking to change up my "go to" winter fragrance, im a 23 yr old male currently using boss bottled by hugo boss and would l mix it up abit now, would to keep to designer fragance as niche tend to be abit pricey for me, anyone think they a have a good suggestion?
is light then Ok for then ie not sunlight but just lcd lights?...i know at the retail stores they have lights overhead and those seem fine...mine r stored in their original boxes in my draw atm...

Visanni 52 bottle wine cooler. Home Depot.. i purchased mine for 199.00 ..with a coupon added on top. I usually set it for around 50-60
OH MY GOODNESS!!....when I saw your collection, I immediately said WOOOOWWWW!!!! You must smell great every day....FANTASTIC!!
The best content on fragrance storage ever , in depth , to the point , well done

tupacole Glad to help!
You shouldve thrown them all out and started again hahahah
I am so glad that I'm not the only one with a store size collection of fragrances!! Love your collection!!
Thanks man, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this. This is really helpful and informative. Thanks.
The best reviewer on TH-cam. So informative. Also, what an amazing collection !

This is a good video for my mom and for any casual person who has fragrances.

no.. shouldn't be a big deal when shipping. However no idea of shipping conditions but for the most part you don't have to worry about that.

Thank you just got into collecting fragrances, have to say Chanel Bleu is my favorite. Still have a soft spot for Givenchy pi.

Thank you for making this video!! I know the basic things to do to store fragrances but you pointed out some things I didn't know. Keep it up!
Very nice and informative video. One question though. Can the lED light in the fridge/cooler or in your closest damage the fragrances?
Great review, i use a black & decker 2.7 fridge from walmart, on the lowest setting it keeps everything at 47*F. Nice! A fragrance collection saved!
HAHAHA Incredible!!
thank you man, all my fragrances went bad today. I should have known better. This was enlightening.
What brand is that cooler?

Thanks for the video ! Answered my question from the other video !!
I actually have a bottle from 09 in my medicine cabinet, and it still smells fine. on top of it I lost the cap years ago.
Thanks Drac
Very useful tips Cody. Are you going to do a collection video?
Excellent video bro! I watched the complete thing and agree with everything you mentioned! Really important aspect for us, the collectors
fantastic video fella. just what i was looking for!
Do you have a review of it? If not, can you make one?
I don't think I'm ready to make the leap to a $200 wine cooler frig but I do keep mine in non-electric plastic picnic coolers. Cody, great video as always. Enjoy these information type videos
You should get one of those dark cabinets

Very useful and interesting video, thanks.
Great informative video ! I wish I had seen it earlier. I just had to buy another bottle of Versace pour homme because the heat killed the top notes.
Me too! My Versace Eros went bad
Great info and very nice collection !! That wine cooler is like a treasure chest
Great video man. Lots of good info.
I just bought JV Dark Rebel kept it in my dresser for less than a week it won't go bad right I moved it to a cupboard away from light
Really great collection bro. some good tips as well. you've really grown as a reviewer and I look forward to all your vids and new material that you'll bring to the fragcomm
What kind of fragrance cooler is that? And Where can I purchase one? Also, do you have that cooler plugged in? And what temperature do you set it at?
how about handbags? is that a do or a dont when it comes to storing my fragrance of the day?
I was going to put shipping tape on the exposed sprayer
Do you think changing the temperature from 68.36 F to 66.56 F concider as a bad temperature fluctuation for my fragrances storage?

I live in canada B.C. and keep all my fragrances in the original boxes they came in. In a drawr and I keep my thermostat at 0 all year round. I like cold. Is this ideal. Please let me know other than that. Love your vids. 👍
Great video as always doc. Keep of the great informative vids.
What are the fragrances in boxes on the black shelf? Also which fragrance is on the far left next to the Chanel's in the cooler?
Great video. Thank you.
Planning to buy a wine cooler for my frags. Is it ok to store the frags in the box inside thhe wine cooler?
should be fine.. I don't know how much direct sunlight your fragrances get though.. so only you would be able to answer that
Hey Cody, if i can buy a good mini fridge that can be changed from 36 to 65 fahrenheit, is it a good alternative instead of investing in a wine cooler?
I have a fragrance collection as well that I keep safe in my closet. However, I would like to know how you feel about keeping them in their original gift sets box.
What temp should you put your wine cooler at?
Hey so with Versace the Dreamer, if I leave it out in the sun it will take away the horrible opening and leave the beautiful dry down??? Lol
Thanks for another great review. Any particular reason you do not keep your fragrances in their original boxes? thanks again. Appreciate all the invaluable insights.
do you like bleu de chanel? hope a review is coming soon
Very well organize good advice love the videos
Where did you get your oils from, if you don't mind me asking? Also, would you recommend a newer person to pick them up for note detecting/testing?
After watching this, I moved my fragrances that are stored in a chest from my open room to my walk in closet. I feel it will lessen the light. Good idea, or will it make no real difference? Also, my room is around 70 degrees most days due to heating/cooling throughout the house.
thanks for the tips just wondering what wine cooler is that ?
Dear can I store my perfumes savely in my cupboard
Question. Do you keep your frags in any type of order? I see people keeping there houses with each other. And others with what type of frag like ouds, sports, aquatic, ect. Ect.
does carrying your cologne like everywhere with you through out the week of school in my book bag effect destroying the cologne?
I keep my fragrances in a 3x10 closet. Its always cool because i dont heat it during the winter. My questions is, since i have to turn on the light everytime, will the light from the bulb cause any fragrances to go bad?
My window faces north with trees I have a blue storage box, my cat sits on to look out the window so I think I'm perty good I sometimes put a camping blue ice bottle [I don't low what they're called.] in with the colognes I've a few and buying more so I worry about time.
