Outstanding video and tool! I will buy one. I build cabinets using the porter cable biscuit joiner. I screw and glue all connections using the biscuits. But I can see this method is much stronger!
Thank you for showing this nice tool in your video. Indexing precisely the exact position of the tenons remains a MAJOR Time-Eater, but then again that goes the same for Festool. (And they NEVER talk about it)...
I think anytime you can save money on a tool that does the same as an overpriced tool, like the Festool, go for it. This looks like an awesome tool substitution. Thanks for the demo.
I’d never even think of purchasing a Festool anything, much less a domino machine. I’m a true mortise and tenon man, but I might just buy your jig. The convenience it would offer at times I believe is well worth the price your asking. Good job Mr Ding
@@adrianmack3 My mistake. I still think it’s a neat little jig. If I purchase it I’d probably dedicate a router to it and leave it pretty much set up. Oh yeah, Mr Ding seems like a nice guy😀, good luck to all involved.
Have to admit that this would be more affordable then the festool. Of late I’ve had to joint some boards together. I used a dowel jig but this would have saved me time and help with accuracy. Thanks Ding!!
This is an amazing jig; in fact, in some ways it’s even better than the Domino. For instance, I can see this this jig routing deeper mortises with a longer router bit-something the Domino simply cannot do. Next, visibility is excellent, making it much easier to rout longer slots with confidence. And, finally, it can easily become a doweling tool by restricting the lateral movement. With a little bit of imagination, a host of useful accessories for chain doweling/mortising can also be built into the design. I hope the person who came up with this jig has applied for a patent, otherwise someone else will probably steal this brilliant idea.
A great mortising Jig keeping it simple to use and affordable. I think that if you turn it upside down you can do mitred joints referencing from the pointed edge. I will have to wait for the 71mm version to fit my Bosch router. Keep up the good work
Great review thanks. I am looking at this jig for two days now and had a few questions couldnt figure it out on their website, youtube recommended it to me now as a first suggestion 😁. You did a great job showing its potential, thank you.
Thanks! Please beware to only purchase this jig from the links I included in the descriptions. I've so far been contacted by two different people who unfortunately made purchase from scam websites, and ended up not receive anything.
@@DingsWorkshop yes the website points to ebay link, and I was very pleased to see they made it for milwaukee m18 router. I will check my history for website
Totally worth getting if you're not sure how often you would be needing it. Even if you use it all the time I still think it would be worth it. Also I'm sure dust collection could be engineered easily enough by the individual.
Just got my new mortiser. Looks great, but no mention of what the bag of parts is for. A small wavy washer and a lock collar with a set screw..Could use some help with this.. can't wait to start using it..THANKS
I built a jig that I use with a plunge router. It's pretty versatile, but I spent about $160 and a full work day building it. I think this tool is a great alternative to the domino, but I would like to see one that works with more powerful routers.
Easier said than done. Bigger router brings weight/balance/handling problems --- per Domino 700. In-line relationship between centerline of cutter and centerline of router motor adds another challenge, especially when cutting in horizontal orientation, which is most convenient, especially for long work pieces.
This is amazing. Can you provide an update on version 2 development? Will that be available soon? Or even this version 1, I noticed it's currently out of stock on the eBay link?
I enjoyed your presentation on Tianli mortising attachment. I purchased a 'similar' attachment from a Facebook ad. It just arrived with no instructions for putting it together ... just a picture with parts labeled in Chinese. While the machining was good, the saddle for holding the compact router was two aluminum 'U"s that have no adjustment. The pistons have no measurements and there is one knob for adjusting horizontal and vertical with no clue as to where it goes. Hey... It was less than 1/4 the price of the Tianli... although "making it work" will cause me some headaches. I consider it a lesson learned.
@@DingsWorkshop No, I have tried to find the ad on Facebook with no success. Joe Doe was the name on the return address in New York... I will try to send you a picture. Thanks for your quick response. Merry Chritmas!
They did have an updated version and I’m getting one soon. The updated version adds a spring so it’s easier to retract. I’ll do a review after I receive it
Have seen that there is already available a new version for dewalt routers, you can buy 5 Tianli jigs for the price of one festool so for me this is a must have jig.
5? the tool is 250 plus shipping almost 300, add a trim router that works in it, maybe you have one already or maybe you dont, add another 100 that is almost 400 dollars now, and yes significantly cheaper and significantly slower. So roughly 2 and some change you can buy maybe 3 instead of 1 domino, but again it would mainly depend on is it making you money or not, if it is a tool used in ur work flow then you still better off with the domino. I do not own a domino and looked at this as possibility but after seeing the price i think i would either pay the extra for the domino or just make one myself out of wood as there are several videos on just that already. Having said all that it looks well made and prob well worth the money for hobbyist, but you are still left with the question if you are a hobbyist, should i build one out of wood. I would have been more interested if it went side to side on an angle as in pivoted.
@@reality150tv I f you live outside of the US or the EU the shipping is way more in my case the import taxes add up 40% for an electric tool over the sale price of the festool for a $1,000 tool is around $150 shipping and $400 in taxes, for this jig is $250 and qualifies in customs as a tool accesory that only pays 13% tax so $32.50 and maybe $50 for the shipping. Each of us see this from our own reality. Right now I do the floating tenons or dominoes on the router table and to my own tenons with hardwood thos allows me to use bigger tenons when needed, this jig is just more practical way of doing it.
@@EPortillo5000 I have no idea where you are at, but you are getting screwed if u are paying that high in taxes, it sounds like u are in some 3rd world country, to not have an authorized festool reseller or something. @@reality150tv Indeed I'm way south of the border, and the taxes are 13% VAT or sales tax and 28% import tax since is an european brand and only if is made in the usa and bought directly from the manufacturer and if they send the right paperwork the import tax is 0%.
@@EPortillo5000 Well that sucks my friend, still i recommend checking out some of the wooden diy versions of this jig, I have seen atleast 6 wooden versions that you could easily make out of scraps and depending on what version some using drawer slides and some using bearing blocks like this one, prob around $20.00 for everything besides ur scraps. I might even make one this weekend and make a video on it, just for a project. What ever route u choose good luck and have fun.
Cool. Just have to keep it in mind it's the cost of the jig plus the cost of the router. So more like $300-$350. Still much cheaper, and also has the ability to be more useful with the router.
Yeah, there are a lot more $350 tools that would bump this one off my list. In fact if I ever had the money to justify this I could probably afford to just buy the festool
Good jig. I agree with a lot of the comments that this is a lot cheaper than buying a domino machine but honestly depends on how much you use it . For example if you are doing thousands of joints and need to use on site where dust extraction and no possibility for clamping workpiece then buy the festool. Otherwise a great jig!
I'm not sure the spindle size of the Bosch Colt. the mounting hole for this jig is designed for 65mm. I THINK the Bosch Colt is around 2-7/8 inch ish? that should fit
Yeah interesting product especially for those who are not pros and do occasional joinery for furniture. Even do pros I’d imagine either domino joiner would be unnecessary since in a higher production environment there would be jigs for repetitive parts. Festool has cornered the market on over priced over hyped tools. Their smaller domino joiner actually NEEDS dust collection or else it clogs up. The big one is heavy and clumsy and must appeal to a very small percentage of the market… big thick slabs joinery… so a very tiny market. A traditional biscuit/plate joiner accommodates the flexibility of loose adjustment but likely is not as strong as a tenon. Alternatively you can do three dowel holes side by side and get similar results to a domino tenon joint. At a fraction of the price. This tool is interesting although in two years it’s shot up from $199 to $260 (30%)plus shipping is $50 so well in excess of buying a plate joiner. With a router you’re certainly over $500 just to do tenons. No bueno Stick to a plate joiner and if you’re obsessed then get a dowel jig for extra strength
I have the domino DF500. Just bought this on their website for less than $60 with free shipping. I'll keep this in my truck for on site work. The domino stays in my shop.
It's a great idea but the bit appears dangerously exposed. Your mileage may vary but a re-design with some sort of cover (plexiglass maybe) would turn me from wary to purchaser.
It certainly is an ideal solution for joining in small projects, but I would prefer a larger biscuit joiner for larger sized builds. You don't necessarily have to purchase a Festool. That being said, where does one purchase the plugs for this style mortise? Good review.
hmm I'm not familiar with the Hikoki M1808DA. But if its 65mm, then yes it will work this jig. Also I believe the maker of this jig if now offering new version which supports different spindle diameters.
