      Yean, Sweden and Denmark would have had far less in war in 1501-1814, and in a Finnish point of view there would have been more military resources to fight against Russia in east. Usually Sweden had to ready to fight against Denmark-Norway in south and west and Russia in east like Charles XII did in the Great Northern War (1700-1721).

    • @Hallvard0
      @Hallvard0 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@board-qu9iu You know why natives died out in our timeline right? They all were killed by old world diseases. Much the same would happen if the old Scandinavian settlements in Vinland survived. It would become a land inhabitet by a scandinavian majority.

    • @Hallvard0
      @Hallvard0 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@board-qu9iu Well the entire scanario rests on a permanent presence of skandinavians in vinland. And there is no reason to rule out that some natives did die to diseases when there was contact between them and the old settlers. If vinland were to survive past the medieval warm period and into modern times it would have led to the same things that happened in real life.

    One thing you didn't really bring up in the video is that not only the Swedish Nobility was displeased with the union, the peasant class (serfdom wasn't really a thing in Scandinavia except denmark proper) was heavily taxed on by the Danes and the Swedish Merchant class was further screwed on by Danish foreign policy making it difficult to export Iron and Wood to the continent. Just appeasing the nobility wouldn't have been enough to solidifying the union, a war with Livonia and Poland with promise of Swedish monopoly over the important trading cities along the coasts might have.

    Well I would assume there would be larger scandinavian populations, the numerous northern wars got a LOT of young men killed that never had families of their own. That snowballs over time.
    I also don't think Napoleon would be much of a threat, you can't invade Denmark (except MAYBE Jutland, though its a nightmare trying to siege down a harbor city such as Kolding with uninterrupted supply lines) without first destroying the scandinavian navies, which even the british would be hard pressed to do in a timeline where Sweden and Denmark aren't constantly at each other's throats.

    A few things to note:
    1) The countries weren't actually united or combined. They were still three countries with their own laws and councils. They just happened to have the same king as their monarch.
    2) Why did it happen? It happened simply for monastic reasons. Margaret the daughter of the Danish king, got married to the Norwegian King, he happened to be the son of the Swedish King.
    When the old kings died, Margaret's son Olaf inherited the Kingdoms one by one, first Denmark then Norway, unfortunately he died at age 17 before he could be crowned king of Sweden. Since Olaf had been a minor, Margaret had been the de facto regent. And so she could choose the new heir. She chose her great nephew Eric, he was also a minor, but was crowned the three Kingdoms. Margaret remained regent until Eric came of age in 1412.
    3) The name "Kalmar Union" was never the official name, and the monarchs styled themselves as the Kings of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The "Kalmar flag" red cross on yellow, was introduced by Eric in 1430, and wasn't used more than locally at Kalmar and at the monastery at Vadstena, and there's no evidence that it was used by later kings. The Dannebrog was the only official flag used in the Nordic area until the Swedish flag was introduced in the 16th Century.
    4) When a King died, a new one was chosen (it wasn't automatically inherited), and had to be recognized by the councils in each of the countries. And he then went to each of them to be crowned. It wasn't always a smooth process, and at times kings were rejected. When Eric sugested his cousin Bogislaw as heir, the Danish council first rejected Bogislaw, and then Eric was deposed in 1439 by both the Danish and Swedish council. The Norwegian council still recognised him as king until 1442.
    5) You mention King Hans, and say he was King of Denmark. That is true, but he was just as much king of Norway and Sweden, sure there was squabble about his coronation, but not a violent rebellion, and he was later crowned in all three after several negotiations.
    6) The bloodbath in Stockholm wasn't the idea of Christian II, It was mainly due to internal intrigues in the Swedish council. Swedish Bishop Gustav Trolle was the main instigator, and the execution likely didn't happen with the consent of King Christian, and it happened after he had left the city, so it is now believed that his signature had been forged. In any case it was naive of Christian to leave Bishop Trolle in charge. He also mismanaged his affairs in Denmark, so he was deposed there in 1523, two years after Stockholm.
    So to sum up, the "Kalmar Union" was never a Country, and was never seen as such by anyone at the time, that idea is a much later romanticisation, that happened in the 19th century, when Scandinavism became popular.
    It was a flimsy monastic union, that relied on the goodwill of the Noblemen in the three councils. And when that goodwill was no longer there in the case of Sweden, they chose their own king.
    And thus the Union continued without Sweden, now as Denmark-Norway.

      @hermeliin8223 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wasn’t Christian II present when the guests were called back to the castle? As he would later have another celebration in the same castle over his daughter being born back in Denmark. Both Trolle and the king had things to gain from the bloodbath, it would have been in the king’s favour if he was informed about the possibility of condemning them of heresy.

    • @Aoderic
      @Aoderic 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hermeliin8223 New research have indicated that he was not present in Stockholm at the time of the executions.
      He was definitely not present at the executions, there's no account of him being there, and the King would definitely have been noted.
      He could of course haft left the city itself, in an effort to wash hands, we don't know. And as you say, it was convenient for him if his opposition disappeared. But the account of his nature (forensic psychologists have examined the case) makes it unlikely that he had wanted a bloody spectacle. His daughter Dorothea was born on the 10th of November, so on the final day of the executions, but it would have taken several days for the news to reach Stockholm, so any celebration would not have happened until the week after.

    What if the East Roman Empire was able to reform and with stronger foreign support and (this is necessary for them to not die) internal instability in the Ottoman Empire they were able to start reviving and maybe start reclaim their old land?
    This all requires that they keep having good emperors like they did towards the end of the empire sadly when it was too late to save it and that they have decent generals.
    Remember plague and raids had also greatly reduced their population so their armies wouldn’t even be able to be that big either. They were at the end of their resources so other ways of them surviving must be considered.

    An interesting timeline, but I am not so sure about when it gets to the WWs, as the Polish USSR war would provide the Kalmar union it's best chance to essentially carve up the USSR's western holdings after the miracle of the Vistula saw the russians pushed back.
    They might be neutral at the start, not believing Poland could survive, but when the reversal happens they might decide to take St.Petersberg and maybe even the rest of the Karellian peninsula to shorten the length of the border they have to defend.
    Even if they did not, they might be able and willing to tell the French and the English to not interfere in the war and to push for the peace that in hindsight proved so damaging to the world by giving the USSR a saving grace.
    Either way, the USSR would either be destroyed or in a much rougher place and conversely you'd see a larger poland with more resources and an ally against the germans in their invasion, assuming the USSR's rougher situation or dissolvement did not cause the germans to change their strategy for handling the poles.

    An interesting scenario. I can understand you setting some limits particularly to the 20th century, such as still making sure both world wars happened like they did and that they also ended similarly, more or less. Kalmar Union wouldn't ever have been the biggest player in Europe, but it's possible in some ways it could have had a significant enough influence that it might have affected what happened during the 20th century. Just Russia never making Saint Petersburg its capital (in fact Saint Petersburg would not even exist as a huge city carrying that name) would have meant that Moscow (assuming it would have been the capital of old instead) would have had pretty much zilch interest in Finland and less interest in the Baltics, as long as it got a good enough harbor. So, Russia could have been far more focused in the south, all along. This might have had major consequences starting especially from the 18th century. In fact with quite a strong Kalmar Union, it's possible Kola would belong to it historically, lessening Russia's interest in the north even more.
    With a unified north, not weakened by constinuous wars, I reckon Kalmar Union would have ultimately participated rather heavily in the colonial affairs overseas. How this would affect the big picture, who knows. But like Netherlands, for example, Kalmar Union Asian colonies would probably have suffered in the Japanese hands during the WW2, making them work together with the British and Americans over there. I agree with you on the WW2 acquiring too many variables to keep an eye on.

    Jesus Christ amazing fucking video. This reminds me, I have this scenario in my head in the 18-hundreds, during a time in which "Scandinavism" was popular amongst especially the southern Swedes and Danes. It really didn't go anywhere due to Prussia and Austria attacking us. BUT, what if, Sweden actually did what they promised, and helped Denmark against Prussia and Austria? There could've been a slim chance of victory for Denmark and Sweden-Norway, due to Denmarks superior weaponry and Sweden-Norways larger population, perhaps Prussia and Austria would give up on "liberating" the Germans in Holstein and Lauenberg, due to once again, Pressure from France, Britain, and Russia like in the first schleswig war. Maybe after a Prussian lose, France and Austria would both invade Prussia, to secure Westphalia as a protectorat, and Austrian annexation of Silesia. Which would've meant, no united Germany. BUT, a united Scandinavia.

    Holding east Karelia = excruciating, but manageable. Once you get it, you'll be forever independent. It's even better than current borders, I'm sure the Scandinavians would get it back, if given the chance.
    The PROBLEM is the Baltics, You can't hold that vs Russia as Finland. I rarely form the Kalmar Union, but Denmark and Sweden always ally me and We can't do it. I can always conquer it back, no issues, but it's a b*tch to hold on to. St Petersburg itself is difficult to hold from Russia as well. It's a useful meatgrinder, but it's likely to fall every time

    if the Kalmar Union never broke up, it would be a super power that no country would just start a war with, many of these outcomes in this video really underestimate how big a difference in power it would end up being, only a few countries at the time would even be able to survive a counter attack, simple, if the wars in the video would occur, most likely by the time ww2 arrives, several countries would be swallowed up by Kalmar Union, or other super powers, to even out the now major power shift.
