  • Formed in 86 and having created their punishing debut, None Shall Defy in 1987, Toronto's (early in their career) Infernal Majesty made a fierce impact in a short period of time before breaking up. The band did resurface 11 years later with their follow-up album, Unholier than Thou (1996), but the subject of tonight's discussion is that lightning in a bottle moment when None Shall Defy demonstrated just how relentless Canadian Speed Metal could be. Demons, leather and HELL! Join us in this trip back to the 80's!

First time I seen the album I thought it was some type of crossover thrash album which would have been fine until I saw the band photo and I realized I was now totally eager to hear the album which ended up being the best the Canadians had to offer in the realm of thrash my op

Good discussion. I've passed on this album many times. I don't recall the band pics but based on the cover art I assumed they were a confused hardcore band. Will be checking it out.

First time I heard about Infernal Majesty was around '91 in Xtreme Noize Mag (i think, or the early Terrorizer issues) about the bassist having some "vampire" type of incident that led to his gf calling the Police. LoL. I thought at the time they would be black-death. Years later in '95 or so I got the Displeased cd reissue and wow. Total death-thrash blackened banger that was the cousin of Possessed, early Slayer and Onslaught. That's my thoughts on that 1st spin. Maybe thrash-speed-death would be my accessment now. I agree with Jim. This record is in a way the daddy (or one of the daddies) of "Altars of Madness". The riffs and atmosphere in "Immortal Rites" and others, totally owe its DNA to these songs. The artwork doesn't bother me, May be cartoonish but it's iconic. The bands clothing outfits to me were more close to early Slayer or Destruction that the LA glam scene. Tons of 80s heavy speed and thrash bands also had "poodle" perms. The Atmospheric evil riffing firmly puts a foot a leg and a ball inside DM territory. Thrash uses repetitive palm muted riffs, but these guys had more tricks. Total killer and their later records don't hold a patch on the magick present on this 87 gem.

Good question from Jim, image is definitely a factor for me, only to a degree though, it’s so often I look at a picture of band members and can know with about 90% accuracy that I’m NOT gonna like it, that doesn’t always work the other way around though. There’s also so many albums i come across that don’t musically live up to how epic and sick the album artwork is, the genre of black metal is most guilty of this for me. At the end of the day though it’s about the music, if I think you’re music is truly outstanding the members could be wearing “pink panties” and it’s not gonna stop me from listening to them.
