Pyasa is a cult... an immortal cult... a movie that could not be described in words... can someone think it was a disaster at theatres when it was first released. It broke Gurudatt from within and he could never recover thereafter.
Pysaa was very commercially successful. It was kagaz ke phool which flooped in the cinema and failed to make any considerable amount of money. Kaagaz ke pbool was the film which broke guru dutt. I think you have these films confused :)
But both the movies are marvelous kagaz ke phool was ahead of its time guru dutt is legend of film industry

Yes,Pyaasa is my favorit film. I saw this several times when I was in North Indian States in the ending years of fifties and still I use to see this Anmool creation of GURUJI in CD.The songs of this film by RAFI SAB and Geetha Dutt are incomparable. It is a classic for ever.My reverance to the memmory of GURUJI.
Guru Dutt was ahead of his time.
Listen to the lyrics (each and every word)…… so damn true in today’s world. It’s a curse to be born as a human ! I doubt if Indian Cinema has or will ever be capable of creating one such master stroke again, this compilation is still the best Indian cinematic way to describe the art of a artist and pin point the narrow mindedness of social stigma, this only proves that time has changed the truth of human society still remains the same to this day.

Arguably, the best song written by Sahir Ludhianvi ji. Unfortunately, there was a rift between SD Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi ji after the success of this film and the two of them never ever came together again. Each one of them claimed the success for the film. Media appreciated Sahir ji for the success of the film. Thus ended the story of one of the finest combination of lyricist and musician in Indian Film Industry.
Sahir had similar rift during same time with OP Nayyar also, hence he was left only with few musicians who were to work with him but they weren't as loaded with work as SD or OP were in mid 50s. Although Sahir did give some mesmerizing tracks with RAVI later.

My belief is that there was trash in the 50s and there are trash movies today (probably more trash today)..but there are no Guru Dutt's today and there never will be. Individual greats are born once in 100 or 1000 years by some divine intervention. Moreover, the level of technicians and actors of those days cannot be matched today (the actors/actresses, lyricist, mysicians...).....
This song reflected the actual sadness of Guru Dutt who committed suicide soon after this movie.
