Transferring Alocasias To Semi-Hydro Is EASY | Leca Semi-Hydroponics How To | Houseplant Repot

- If you're no stranger to this channel you'll know my new found LOVE for semi-hydro. When I first got into semi-hydroponics for my houseplants I tried out leca - and HATED IT.
Now that I've had my fair share of successes with pon, I decided to break open that old bag of leca and try it again.
My Alocasia Micholitziana was the best plant to test out the leca again - since Alocasias are big fans of semi-hydro. At least that's what I've gathered from my Zebrina taking a turn for the better after its pon transplant.
I also found lots of baby corms in the old soil, so I'll go a little in depth on what I do to grow baby alocasias.
Stay tuned for updates to see how this Alocasia does
Stay Botanical! ✌️🤍🌿

Girl get yourself a solder tool! Super cheap and they melt through plastic to go containers like butter! Nice clean holes and no more poking holes/cracking the containers.
😂😂😂 I know, I know I need one. But that will make my life too easy 🙃
The sprouts will grow upright if placed upside down, they do that in nature. No one comes along to place them upside down. It’s natural for it to want to sprout.
Cutting the roots 1/4 isn’t too much. This way it develops water roots without rotting the soil roots like I did. I use moss a round the stump to encourage root growth. Alocasia love Lecha. It allows more space for root growth and aeration. Have you tried Fluval Substrate? The roots exploded out of the Corm in a few days. Moss is so difficult to remove from the roots. I put the Corms in Peroxide/Water mix which also stimulates the Corm to grow without the crust. The more roots the more leaves. Great video.
This is an amazing Leca how to!
Aw thank you! I’m glad you liked it 😊🌿👏❤️
I mix rinsed size #3 perlite in with my Pon (50/50 mix) to help it stretch further, plus it's not as heavy. I like having the larger air pockets in the mix, too. That Dyna Gro Foliage Pro is for soil and hydro.... so that was a great choice! The packaging is new, since the company that owns Superthrive bought out Dyna Gro.
Ok, I’m definitely going to try perlite with the pon! 👏👏
@@BotanicalBrunette Pon is A LOT more expensive than LECA, so for plants that I don't feel I need to be extra-extra methodical and careful with, I use a mix of pon, pumice, and LECA. The pon gives the reliable moisture wicking that I'm most familiar, plus it fills up all the nooks and crannies inside the container to lend stability to taller plants. The other ingredients make the mix lighter (weight-wise) and airier, and also save me a little bit of money.
Ha! I just bought the same jar a week ago and I use it as a terrarium. New sub💚
Haha yay! It works pretty well 😊👏
I had 2 micholitzianas (if I spelled that right) and the African Mask. I lost all 3. I bought the black velvet, which did o.k. I had to move it indoors due to changing light and heat conditions. It seems happier now. I use leica with some of my indoor plants. [Now back to your video].😊
Glad your black velvet bounced back! 😊🌿
Thank you so much for the video! I recently got into semi hydroponics and sometimes struggle to find the information I need. This was extremely helpful. If you don't mind, I wanted to ask quickly about the roots.. Many of my plants have taken to leca (all I've used so far) very well. Others, however, like my monstera (also with the long stem..) have had issues with root rot. When I transferred the monstera from soil it had a very large root system, like your alocasia did. I'm guessing that chopping those off or at least cutting them back helps prevent root rot? I have my first alocasia arriving Friday, and I plan to put it in leca, so thank you again for showing me how!
I have a zebrina reticulata that I transferred into pon and it seems happy, growing healthy roots and everything, the leaves are not dropping, BUT! …it keeps producing flowers, 5 so far! No new leaf yet, so annoying. I’ll be following your journey on this plant! 💚
Hmm, it might have to do with the NPK ratio of the fertilizer. Perhaps the one you are using is stimulating flowering more than leaf growth
I just kept snipping off any flowers when I saw them and eventually I got a new leaf. Hopefully it gives you something soon 😊🌿
My alocasia's thrive in a glass indoor greenhouse on pon with 100% humidity inside. The roots and leaves go crazy, and I can still enjoy them even the glass is mostly condensed. When the stem gets too long, I just plant it further down in the pon, andit will get a lot of quorns.
Omg yes! That sounds like the perfect place for it! The more moisture the better I’m finding 👏😊🌿
I'm about to put my alocasia polly in leca. Almost lost it when it was in soil. I've been keeping it in water for a few months and think it's ready to be transferred. 🤞🏾
Hopefully your micholitziana likes the leca. I have one in soil that only hangs onto two leaves and was thinking of putting it in semi hydro too. It has a long stem like yours did so I think I’ll cut it like you did. My two other alocasia are in pon. I have about ten plants in leca that seem to love it. There’s a lot less watering with it, but for some reason I hate flushing it (even though it’s not hard at all), so I limit the number of plants I keep in leca.
It’s the only way I’ll grow alocasias now. They’re so annoying with watering and this takes that out of the equation. Glad your plants are loving semi hydro as well 😊👏🌿
I always put Lecavalier at the bottom and pon on top of it
Hi! Nice video 🙌🏻
One question, is it possible that corms grow(“develop”) from de mother plant in leca or pon? As if they were growing in soil?
Hey I have the same humidifier! How do you like it? For me it doesn’t increase humidity well for me! Great channel.
Oh yeah?! I like if for what it does. I don’t need to up the humidity in the whole room, just my alocasias and calatheas.
Update? Can we see the Zebrina?
Is there a video with an update?
I have none j but it I follow a lot of people that use semi hydro and full hydro.
Hello. What are the containers next to that terrarium you made on the glass shelf?
Hey! I’m not sure what containers you’re referring to
Hi Panda. My question is, can corms produce while plant is in leca, Pon or water? Thanks for your informative video.
Hi! You mean like still attached to the mother plant? Absolutely 👏
maybe this would help me grow alocasias. I just love them but i have not had any luck with them
It’s the only way I’ll grow alocasias now. Hope you have luck with it 😊🌿
Were u got that cute crystal ball❤❤❤
The disco stake? It’s in my Etsy shop 😊🪩✨
@botanicalbrunette Do you have an update? How is your alocasia doing in leca 3 months later?
th-cam.com/video/F3bPOZBTLSc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sCnoO-9l-_iOqM1q here’s the update I posted a little while back. But - I’m happy to report it’s doing even better now! 😊🌿👏
@@BotanicalBrunette thank you! So nice!
I am honk removing the shells gives it a better chance to sprout. In the wild not every corm will sprout
Everyone has they’re own way. 👏😊🌿
Can you grow in perlite instead of laca
Absolutely 👍
Is there an update on this? My alocasia got really stressed after I took the soil off the roots and put it in pon
And idk what I did wrong
Oh boy. I just took a very young black velvet out of soil. I have it in water-probably for a week or 3, then I’ll stick it in leca so it’s hopefully not too shocked. I 100% don’t expect great results, so I already have a backup.😩😅
I mix my leca with pon for some of my plants
I actually did this to a few plants because I was low on each and it works pretty well! 🌿👏😊
@BotanicalBrunette sorry to bother you I have just received my first philodendron gloriousium small single stem, I have put it in pon would you put a dome over it to help keeping it humid and warm. Am in 🇬🇧 And it 🥶 any suggestions I would appreciate it. It under my grow light.
@@blackbeauti1540 hi! You can. It helps it accumulate a little easier with more humidity.
@BotanicalBrunette thank you I remember your video with your one and I totally understand when you love a plant and u don't want nothing to happen with it. Thank you for taking the time out to reply love your videos.
I love ❤️ alocasias too. I’m
Going to try them in leca as well
👏👏
👍🌱
I have a maharani that had like 9 leaves on her and suddenly she started declining and putting out 6 flowers 🥲 she’s got two remaining leaves and ANOTHER flower on the way 😵💫
Ugh those flowers are so annoying. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully it bounces back after it’s done blooming
I feel you take too long to get to the point and say “like” too often. I don’t think your white claws go well with gardening. I will try your semihydro leca.
