    OMG watching this vid as I continue to orient in my new role as a Trauma ICU RN...I am giving you virtual high fives! You've touched on all of the things I'm feeling right now. I struggle with getting away from the Med Surg mentality and honing in on my critical thinking skills. I wish you well and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Yes I love it! Continuing to grow and learn is what nursing is about. I work in the ER and some times we hold ICU patients. I understand why y'alls ratio is 1:1 or 1:2 because it can be a lot. Kudos to you! New supporter here, hope you return the love:)

    OmG this was great! I’ve been a med/surg nurse and there’s this charge nurse at ICU that’s been telling me for months to transfer there. I’m about to do my paperwork and I’m feeling nervous and excited! This is what I wanted to do since I was in college but now that is about to start I’m getting nervous. Your experience helped me kindda see myself and see how I’m not the only one who would go through that change and struggle.
    I admire you for making that decision and I’m sure you’re learning and will become the best ICU nurse

    Hi! I’m actually apply for this exact job later this week! I’ve been an orthopedic/trauma nurse for exactly a year now and I’m hoping by the grace of God that I get the job. Your videos are confirming why I’d make a smooth transition from my Ortho/trauma floor to a trauma ICU. You seem like a great nurse and I’ll definitely subscribe. Praying for you sis ❤️

    Thank you for sharing the details, I really this is what I want to do in Nursing, what I dreamed that Nursing should be.
    Plus you're so real and honest. Thank you for being transparent yet *real* Getting good perspectives from these videos.
    Thank you! One great tip, take advantage of your preceptor- ask questions- get hands dirty/ hands on, and yes you are *smart* ,your confidence will grow as you grow in this journey. Your med surg skills give you advantage over a new grad , and try to not worry about the " dismiss me "stuff ( I know easier said then done), it takes up to 2 years to stop feeling ' new' but it shrinks the divide as you continue on-- for everyone regardless of what you see.

    what videos would you recommend new ICU nurses watch in order to prep for Trauma ICU? I subscribed to ICU Advantage, but there's soooo many videos, I don't even know where to begin. thanks and loved the video!

    • @michofalltrades
      @michofalltrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yes there are sooo many videos!! I started using ICU advantage a few weeks after I started working in the ICU. So I would normally watched the videos that would pertain to the things I saw or struggled with understanding while on the floor. It might seem overwhelming but honestly, that's how the ICU can start off to be. There are a lot of things you need to learn and know, and unfortunately, you cant choose to ignore it.

    Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been working on MS unit, and I’m gonna start my new job on Trauma ICU next week. I’m so nervous thinking about it. I feel like I don’t know anything critical care related, and I might have bite off more than I can chew.
    Is there anything that you wish you knew before you started working there? Or any information that I need to brush up on?

    • @michofalltrades
      @michofalltrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      first off, congratulations!! I'm excited that you're taking a step into your new journey. It is definitely a challenge I will tell you! I felt the exact same way!! There were days I felt like I shouldn't have left my old unit in the first place and I don't belong to an ICU.
      But what I wish I knew was to study ahead of time. I never studied for work before (sounded absurd) and I think it was because I was never really challenged enough. But I started watching videos on this page called " ICU advantage" after work. it makes videos about the different medications you need to know and the new machine/equipment that you need to familiarize yourself with. You have be a sponge and be willing to learn and soak up knowledge (from nurses, doctors, RTs, etc) I will be making a whole video on this as well, so stay tuned! ;)

    New to your channel and watching this video, I felt like we were having a heart to heart. I just started a general ICU which is also the Covid ICU and I was wondering if you had any resources that are really helping you out. I saw you mentioned ICU Advantage and I’m checking that out. I feel like I wish sometimes things slowed down so I could learn or ask questions but I guess that’s the nature of our job. Do you feel like there’s anything you do with your preceptor to help facilitate this learning?

    • @michofalltrades
      @michofalltrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey there ! Congratulations on your new job position ! in the ICU, the learning never stops and you begin to grow more in knowledge and skill ! Yes I felt like the ICU was super intense and fast when I first started . Tbh I still do now lol but believe me when I say that it gets better . I know it’s cliche but an increased exposure to something results in an increased level of comfort and acclimation to it . The more you work in the ICU and see what you see over there , the more you’d get used to the flow of things and the more proficient you’d become ! Always keep and open mind and most importantly, be teacheable and open to learning more and accepting criticism.
      What I did with my preceptor is that sometimes after a shift week , I’d ask her what skills I need to work on more based on her observations of me . She’s a very experienced nurse so I always take her advice seriously .
      I hope that helps ♥️

    Hi do you know anything the PCU trauma floor?

    • @michofalltrades
      @michofalltrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! yes I worked PCU trauma because it was the same floor as my medsurg trauma unit. Before working in the PCU I had to take a little training course at my hospital to be PCU certified. . PCU trauma nursing a little more critical than medsurg, you have a less patient ratio and you have to monitor them a little closer because they are a little more sick. They aren't however, too sick to be in the ICU. you learn a little more in the PCU trauma floor and it is a little bit of a stepping stone into ICU trauma.
