I’m British born and British bred but moved to the US aged 36 and since I moved here , everyone always says life can’t be shit in the UK because we all live like the royal family. I show them this film and it blows their minds.
That's a pretty sad reflection on Americans, seems a very insular self important society , to think not every country has people and circumstances like this is crazy to me being an ex pat Brit and an Australian
Note to all women who experience domestic violence from their partners:-
When they say they are sorry and will never do it again they mean it. BUT they WILL do it again. Over and over.
Get away from the psycho before he does it again or kills you.
In the U.K. contact the charity Refuge. I’m saying this as a retired (male) nurse. Also, it’s not just “working class” men who do it.
Kathy Burke and ray Winston two of the most powerful performances I’ve ever seen
As if I have just found out that Gary is Big Mo’s brother 😮
Hahaha me too! I confused it with someone else that looks hard as fuck - can't remember her character of real name
Huh... only just realised the actor Charlie Creed-Miles also appeared alongside Bruce Willis and the late Ian Holm in Luc Besson's The Fifth Element. Charlie played Ian Holm's Cornelius' apprentice.
I remember seeing this film when it first came out. I still remember it to this day. Superb and unbelievably raw. It reads more like real life ... hard to believe these are actors playing a part. Superb film.
"What goes around comes around." After all these years loving this film, I never realised he was talking about the theme...God bless you Gary.
Gary Oldman is a national treasure
i love movies like this, i love kathy burke, so why have i never even heard of this film’s existence until now when i just seen a clip of it on tiktok 🙄😂 i’ve gotta watch this
Ayo. Did you watch it?
One of the greatest films I've ever seen
excellent flick i showed it to some friends of mine who are all yankees like me and didn't know dick about british anything and even they all agreed it was excellent.
best part of the whole flick, though, has to be when the scottish guy with the mullet pucnhes RAY's lights out. only time in the whole flick you get to see the character finally get what's coming to him.
Plus it's a more accurate depiction of London and London life than the usual "Hollywood version" as seen in films like Notting Hill, Mary Poppins etc
@@Hoffinator well of course mary poppins is a ww2 fantasy flick and the others are yuppie romcoms designed purely to appeal to females. naturally they're not as realistic as "NIL" they're different genres. i gotta say, though, i both liked "RAY" and yet wanted to jump into the screen and slam him one. definitely piqued my machismo.
I grew on the estate this was filmed. At the time this was filmed. It's been knocked down for nearly 20 years.
whats there now

They call it Kidbrooke village, private flats. it's quite nice. It's only 20 minutes into central London by train. It's still not totally finished, they build a few blocks at a time.
Only watched it the once and it's as incredible as it is harrowing. It's absolutely brutal at times, but the performances are out of this world and one every film fan should watch at some point.
Quality film
Gary Oldman, what a bloody legend. His portrayal of Sid was simply perfection, an incredible actor and director.
That first picture was were I grew up on the ferrier estate had the best upbringing on the ferrier ever been knock down now tho
Best British film to date. Unmatched.
I felt that they forgive Ray a bit too easily in the end of the film
What is the soundtrack title about this trailer please?
Grand.
♥♥♥
looks dark.... I need to see it!
It's strange. This won two BAFTAs, among other awards. It may be Gary Oldman's best film... and Gary's not even in it. It did bomb at the box office because it's not a "feel-good movie." And it's not the kind of movie everyone can identify with. I mean, I know there's a lot of domestic unrest in the world. But... it's different in different parts of the world. People in Britain say... this is accurate. And this is why Oldman made this movie. To address what goes on in the neighborhood he was born and raised in. Oldman has said repeatedly that his family wasn't like this. But... many are and he wanted to show that. I hope more people do check this thing out and he (and it) gets the consideration it deserves.
Well I re-watched it last night after watching it some 25 years ago, and I have to say what a cracking film it is! Fantastic acting all round but Ray, Kathy and Charlie all stood out in my opinion. My only slight criticism was there could have been more fcuking swearing. Haha...
I didn't remember Kathy Burke being this good-looking.
I know. When this was originally released she looked rank but by jumping 26 years later and observing the utterly grotesque creature she is now, she looks like Marilyn Monroe here.
The 4k really brings out the South London grime.
I think Gary grew up, witnessing this kind of shit
Gary could have at least got big Mo a role in Batman!
999
This is the most accurate representation of the London criminal class I have ever seen on film.
Apparently kaff fckn attes gawee in Reewel larfe quote pod carst oi oi carmden missive
In spanish "los golpes de la vida" only in VHS 🤮🤮🤮🤮
It’s weird to think that Gary Oldman created this hyper real masterpiece and then has to go through the motions, in the complete faux realist slow horses.
That was not as good as these comments. It was OK. Got a bit tiring listening to people with marbles in their mouth.
I got a bit sick of the word cunt by the end of it aswell lol
