On February 1, 2019, a large bronze elephant named Petal that had been in the mall since 1982 was moved out of the closed mall and will be relocated to the Burlington Riverwalk.

Being in a mall after it closes feels like when Dorothy pulled back the curtain and it's just a little fat old man. The facade of life just disappears and all the synthetic magic turns to mist and disapates, revealing what was always true.

ICANanimations ive lived in South Africa, Australia and the UK and pretty much every mall has a big supermarket chain inside it and the malls are always busy and with full or near full occupancy. Supermarkets are definetly the top anchor stores in these countries' malls.

One fine point about "Night Of The Comet": The comet didn't actually crash into the Earth and cause mass extinction by impact. The Earth passed through the comet's tail, resulting in mass extinction by radiation. Steel structures turned out to be life saving factors that night (Reggie in the movie theater projection room, her sister Sam in the backyard tool shed at home, Hector in the back of his semi), while the overwhelming majority of the population was variously either turned into instant zombies, exposed to radiation to the point that they'd eventually turn into zombies after a period of time, or instantly disintegrated. Sure, the whole premise is shoddy Hollywood science, but hey, details. It was still a fun movie.

I remember when I grew up in the area during my childhood and went to this mall. Brings back memories. Malls were very popular in the '80s and '90s, but have since been on a freefall.

That is because he shot from the side of the 4th (4 not 3) anchor store that was Strawbridges. You can see cars reflected in the glass of the main entrance where he did have to go in.

Closed Jan 9th 2018 after a water main broke. They were in the process of closing down the facility by March 2018, the non profits that were using space were told to vacate by the end of December 2017. The only thing left is the Sears, and they are not owned by the same owners as the mall. The electrical system was taken out by the water main.
And now Sears is gone.

I know the feeling, I used to come here with friends on random days and just hang out or show up for various Pokemon TCG events. Hell the old Allied Hobbies store is where a bunch of us started having weekly Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments before they changed their policies and we relocated to Ron's Comic World in Lumberton off the 38
Ron's Comic World is still going strong surprisingly. The old armory next to it though is being abandoned.
My mom used to drive me here from New Brunswick. Place was packed.
This was my childhood mall, after I moved. It was OK up until about 2000 when I graduated HS. Anyone in the area eventually saw the benefit of driving a little further to go to the Moorestown or Cherry Hill mall. I think 3 things really killed off this mall (aside from any mismanagement ): fortunes of anchors; the construction of the Target, Kohls and Home Depot next store; and the decline of the nearby towns of Mt Holly and Burlington City. Like many dying malls, once this one became known as "the black mall" it will have a steady decline of tenets and shoppers. Those that do remain generally are low-rent - the stores and their costumers - which will make the shopping experience unpleasant.
It's really sad to see the mall like this especially compared to something like the KOP mall behemoth.
The fountain was always the best part.
I grew up there and remember what a big deal it was when it opened. Came back in 2013 (two years before this video) after 10+ years away and was stunned by what happened. It might be down to 10% occupied now.

This was a must-stop for the longest time on the drive to and from the Jersey shore, depressing to see it on its last legs. It was a big deal when it opened. I really hope the fountain finds a good home, its a wonderful piece of art that deserves a better fate than to be demolished when the mall eventually goes under.

I LOVE ALL YOUR DEAD MALL SERIES! I WATCH THEM OVER AND OVER! I wish you would get some more videos about the Dead Malls because mall are a piece of our history! It's so sad they are all dying out though.
I remember getting my gamecube from that gamestop. Back then, in 2002, it almost felt like a city with all the people walking around and all the lights (it was nighttime when we went) and the vertical structure of this mall (as opposed to single level malls like the moorsetown mall.) I miss this so much and was so sad to see the building itself got demolished.
Came here a few times as a kid. Remember looking at that fountain, sunlight peeking through, and thinking of how beautiful it was. Came back a couple years ago and was sad to see how dead it was. Nice to see a full tour

I love the whole dead mall series and have watched all of them 100's of times each probably. I would have to say that the Burlington Mall probably is my favorite even though they are all equally amazing. I love all the trumpet elevator music in the series. Great music, editing and camerawork.
I actually visited this mall last year just to see how it was holding up. The last time I went to this place was when I was a kid. I remember how crushed i was to see that the mall I used to go to was now dying. My childhood took a blow during that year, and even now as I watch this video. I loved this mall! I performed with my school's choir and concert band under the Bath and Body Works in that open area 15:30. It was a JCPENNEY'S near where we were performing, of course it's gone now.
Thank you, Dan, for your work in capturing this part of American history. I remember going to the mall as a child and through my early adult years. It is hard to see these buildings abandoned or demolished in favor of faceless/soulless online shopping.

i saw Night of the Comet! i loved it! i love the scene at the mall too! it depicted two freinds just trying to forget their troubles.
In Asian countries, malls are connected by underground trains systems (subways). No matter if it rains or shines, people in Asian countries just visit one mall after another without having to worry about the weather. I, for one, do not enjoy driving to the mall all the time. My new car door got a scratch by the lady jumping off her car next to mine in the mall's parking lot. A lot of time, waiting to get out of the parking lot is not enjoyable as well when the passing by cars don't even slow down or stop to let me back out of my space.
Also, a lot of malls in Asian countries have show arena or plazas. There are always kids singing contests, pet shows (some malls here don't even allow small pets), variety shows for the elderly, holiday events, dance competitions in the malls to draw big crowd of people (i.e. families with kids and pets). I don't see these events in the malls near where I live in the Bay Area. They are quite borrowing to visit. And, a lot of them are not pets nor kids friendly. If a family bring kids to the mall, it is only to buy the Starbucks coffee with lots of sugar, or eat the biggest pieces of pizza, then buy some clothes.... always same old... Nothing like a paid indoor kids playhouse, or playground for the highly creative kids of today. There is no ice-skating rings inside a lot of American malls. Young people need a place to hang out and do exercise after school or during weekends; and perhaps watch a movie afterwards and eat in the food courts. The failing malls lack a variety of things for a family to come visit and enjoy their stay. And the Sears, Macy's, Nordstorm need to close all their half-century old stores. Their very existence with outdated exterior and interior designs are not helping either.
I have recently visited some malls in the Bay Area, and they don't even have Daiso, Quickly, Ghirardelli and other hipper shops inside. The demographic trend has put demands on newer concepts and hipper offerings, but a lot of malls don't offer these sough-after shops.
The malls here are dying because they are not keeping up with the changing time. Most malls are very low-tech and are unexciting to visit because they are not only outdated in design and are eyesore to look at, they also lack the very variety of activities and offerings for the typical American families with elderly, parents, kids and pets. (my 2 cents)

I see a lot of comments on these videos talking about how online shopping has caused the fall of these malls, and while it certainly was a factor, I think the main reason why is because of the mall owner's refusal to change or get with the times, coupled with marketing to the wrong demographic. Stop pushing Macy's and Nordstrom and expensive department stores, millennials can't afford to shop there and right now, they have the most buying power.
Indeed we live in a similar situation. Also notice that malls to many people in Asia are more than just places to buy stuff from, they're also places for people to hang out. Lots of small specialty stores and restaurants outside the food court. They also serve as major hubs for public transportation.
There ARE some really nice malls in America if you know where to go. Take the Christiana mall of Delaware. It has a big mix of stores and some attractions for children such as gaming stands, indoor playgrounds, ETC. It is one of the only thriving American malls I've ever been to. I must admit, the malls I've been to around urban Indonesian areas such as Semarang and Jakarta are definitely better than the majority of American malls I've walked through. Much like you've said, the malls have a variety of things to keep families coming back to them such as arcades, artificial snow vats (Of course, due to the lack of snow in the tropics), ice rinks, and so on. They of course don't have some of my favorite American businesses, but they make up for it with different Asian businesses you wouldn't find in America.
agree, in Jakarta there are some malls that even has three or more Starbucks with some more other coffee shop. There are also some cart shops with cheaper options and there are big bookstores and supermarket in there. I also go to certain cafes and coffee shops at mall when I work on my assignments. So, mall is still fun and hippie
Miss Dreavus as I lived in Jakarta whole my life, Jakarta has too many malls but none of them are empty no matter how ugly it is. It is still complete regardless, and our internet connection is still lame for us to depend on online shopping.
I worked at the Bannister Mall back in 2006 3 years before it closed and your right it is a neat feeling to be in the mall after closing when everyone is gone. I LOVE dead malls I wont shop a good mall but I love the dead ones.
This mall was thriving when I was a child, now it's so run down. They keep talking about the plans, however they keep delaying it. I wish they would just redo it already, it's an eyesore. Love these videos! Keep up the great work!
I remember shopping at this mall quite frequently as a teenager. The last time I was there was in 2014 when I came home for my dad's memorial service and I was just dumbfounded by how dead the mall was. As I was watching this, I found myself going "Oh, that's where Allied Hobbies used to be" or "That's where Chick-Fil-A was" or even "Oh, that's where we used to have our Pokemon TCG tournaments back in the day."
Looking at that remarkable fountain with that 50s music in the background echoing in the distance, with no people on sight, just gave me these strong Fallout vibes.

I attended the opening of this Mall way back in 1982 ... walked my 8 year old arse 9 miles two towns over to get there! Spaceport was my sole interest at the time, but I do recall reading in the News Paper a story about the Artist who created that Fountain

I remember going to this mall all the time with my parents when I was a little kid, it was so lively and vibrant. That station in the food court with the blue counter used to be a Burger King. They closed a few years ago. The Macys was a Strawbridges at one point. There used to be a huge fountain at the bottom of the escalators and another small one in front of the Sears. That mall had such a beautiful interior and exterior. Its a damn shame much of it will be demolished, hopefully it'll just be the anchors.
that was the one thing that always got me, you had a BK in the mall itself and then one across Bromley Blvd. by Target and the movie theater and all that fun stuff. Like was it really necessary to have two Burger Kings in such close proximity? lol
This is incredible. I first saw your video on this mall as an algorithm recommendation. It was shut down, gutted and ready for destruction. Seeing familiar sights as either operational or somewhat recently closed is indescribable.

I used to go to this mall when I lived in Mt. Laurel, NJ from 2002-2005. Very shocking to see what it's like now. It was a decent mall back then and I used to go to the movies there also. It wasn't as nice as the nearby Cherry Hill mall or Moorestown Mall but it still was a busy place at the time I left in 2005.
The same type of people that brought this mall down also brought down the Granite Run Mall and the Willingboro Center. The mall in Vineland is also on its last legs.

They saved the statue! She's been relocated to a museum, if I recall correctly. I believe the coal miner statue at the (now demolished) Schuykill mall was also rescued when it was closed.
Bonus: I tried to visit the mall in September, but I didn't realize it was completely closed. I got chased out by a security guard within seconds of entering the mall's parking lot.
I used to come to this mall as a kid during the 90's. My dad would take me to the Allied Hobbies store on the second floor by Sears I think. I would usually get HO scale trains or model airplanes. It was a great hobby store with lots of neat displays. I even think they had trains running on a layout at one point. Been a long time. It was a great mall at one time. Then everyone in south jersey decided that Cherry Hill was the best mall. But Cherry Hill will always be my favorite mall in south jersey because I have so many memories of there with friends and family. Oh and Deptford mall was great too. I liked the Echelon mall because of the Vorhees library too. But that was 15 years ago. Man I feel old.

I had two jobs there in 1983-84 - BookEnd and Print N Things - I even won the Strawbridge contest at the age of 16 of $4,000 in product. Thank you for bringing back some special memories, appreciate it!

I live five minutes from this mall. This place was amazing when I was a kid. A BK (what made it more awesome was when the BK had Pokemon Night with the school and you got to see all of your classmates) a Chick fil A, a once kickass arcade.It's depressing to see the mall in such disrepair. I hope they find a way to turn this place in to something more worthwhile.

I worked in the Sears in 1998 to 1999. It's crazy to see it in such bad shape. The food court always had birds in it.
Night of the Comet 💫 used to be one of my favorite movies. Me and my cousins used to watch it over and over when we were little.

Dawn of the Dead remake (2004) was filmed 10 minutes from where I live at the Thornhill Square Shopping Centre. Once too a very dead, but very nice mall. Nicely renovated. The mall never had a turning point, it was dead from the weak after opening. It was badly located, with quite low visibility. A developer came in and demolished 3/4 of the mall (the east end) and redeveloped it into townhouses. The other 1/4 consisted of a 6 floor office tower, the remaining stores below were all turned into offices, the only remaining part of the mall is a bank, and the grocery store.
OMG!!! I used to worked in this mall as a teenager so many moons ago LOL. Where that elephant water fountain is,right across from it was a store called Anderson Little mens wear. It was my first job and i was sales,my mom was the tailor there . Wow..i have to show this to her. I havent been in New Jersey in over 10 yrs,i had no idea it was abandoned now. Thanks Dan for showing this,it reallly REALLLLLY brought back some good memories!!!!! And yes i saw night of the comet when i worked there at the theater!!! Itsnt that crazy? ahahahhaa!!

Went back this morning, the entire Macy's/Elephant fountain wing was walled off just passed the food court.
+This is Dan Bell. If you have any questions about this mall, i may be able to help. I grew up with this mall, I remember when they built the JC Penny in 1996 or so, that is when they last did a major overhaul of the interior. For example at the food court they used to have hoop lighting over the walkway, like little marquee lights from a cinema. The gang warfare was the final straw to this mall in the 2000s By then it was obvious that the mall was dead. When Strawbridge and Clothier was bought out by Macy's and was rebranded you knew that the store in this mall was on the chopping block. I was born in 1988 so most of my information would be the mid 90s. I plan to visit this mall next week, i will see if the suncoast still smells.
And that one blue trolley waited there, every day, for its master to return........

I remember those birds flying around the food court from back in the '90s, when this mall was still strong. I liked the birds and thought there was an open atrium to intentionally let them fly in and out as they pleased. I also thought it was consistent with the mall's branding (note the giant bird graphic at the entrance).

Went to this mall yesterday for the Sears Auto Center. The up escalator was out of order. There's only a handful of stores, an arcade and one food stand left; other than that it might as well be abandoned as nobody was inside but employees and one or two people that seemed lost. It was the day after it rained as well and the roof was leaking all across the mall. They said they were going to tear it down and start redevelopment this summer yet it's still standing.

I used to go to this mall as a kid. My parents lived in South Jersey before we moved to PA but we were close enough to go often. Sad to see it fall apart but I knew it was going to back in 1996 when I was last going there. PS. There's another (not dead) mall that has a nice fountain at Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem, PA. It's somewhat like this one minus the elephant statue.
BTW: The Target shopping center next to this mall is much busier than this place.
Also, I believe the gang thing was a detraction. I worked at a Boscov's at Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne, PA and while we never had any gang violence there or in the mall while I was there, however, we were told by management to be on the look out for gang tags in the fitting rooms after I found one during an evening shift in the coats and dresses department. That was months before the incident in Burlington.
The bronze elephant named Petal was saved. The Burlington Rotary Club worked with Arts Guild NJ to ship her to a bronze foundry in Chester PA for reconditioning in 2019. The article mentioned that Petal will once again be on display at her new home on the Riverwalk in Burlington NJ. Sadly the entire mall has been demolished not just the big anchor stores. Thank you for the video, it brought back fond memories.
This makes me sad. I used to get music lessons at farrington's in this mall. This mall used to do Halloween for kids who's neighborhoods weren't that nice in the late 90s early 00s. I used to go to movies at the movie theater across the street then come mallrat here on Friday nights. There was a store called the zone with incense and all kinds of hippie stuff in this mall that we used to think was really cool. I worked at the movie theater across the street for 6 years and used to eat dinner here a couple nights a week. My ex girlfriend worked at bath and body in this mall and American Eagle. Holy shit its sad to see :(

This was actually sort of an old stomping ground for me. I got excited when I saw it in your list, but kind of sad, too. We didn't go a lot because I was a ways away from it, but it was a real treat when we got to go there. I have to admit, though, I don't recognize it at all. And I don't remember that fountain. It has been probably the early 90s since I was there, though.
Dan Bell, another mall movie which I feel is criminally underrated is Mallrats.
After seeing those overgrown weeds, I didn't expect the place to be open for business.
The parking lot asphalt has been bleached white for so long that I can no longer remember when it *hasn't* looked like that.

I worked as a mall guard while going to school in Tallahassee Fl. I had the Governor's Square Mall all to myself ( for the most part ) , Fri- Mon from 11:00 pm - 9:00 am.
My partner, who could never remember my name, would usually stagger off and pass out in a ladies room somewhere for the duration of the shift and outside of him, and the occasional store employee doing inventory and embezzling after hours, that was it .
At night the interior looked huge, any sound echoed off the tile ,making it seem even larger.
It was awesome during a couple of tropical storms that hit the area. The pouring rain and the lightning illuminating the interior while the thunder boomed .
On some nights you could watch a full moon through the pyramid skylight while getting high.
More often than not I'd set my boom box next to the P.A. mic in the mall office and have the Clash or the Damned blasting through the mall at 3:15 in the morning. Strange days ...
Governors Square was a Rouse Mall as well, it might still be for all I know.
