    Hi Justin, I am a new subscriber. I have to say your channel has really inspired me to continue this work. I’ve been a lonely photographer out here in the West and I didn’t know how to formulate all these thoughts and ideas about photography, but your voice and been very inspiring.

    Thanks, good kick in the butt. Fabulous advice, the first step is truly always the most difficult.

    A perfect quote I came across today in relation to your video “The magic you are looking for lies in the work you are avoiding”

      That’s the second person to mention that to me today , great quote.

    I think it always comes back to motivation. There likely has to be some form of reward, be it financial or just for yourself and a personal project. Otherwise, we're creatures of habit. When the creative juices are running - and you're in the groove, there is no end to what you can achieve. Just do it!

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well said Paul and yeah we are creatures is habit so it’s what to create good ones early on :).

    When I was doing pro work I operated under a simple motto. Clients don't pay for excuses. And you're absolutely right about just asking for access. What's the worst that can happen? They might say no. Then find a workaround to get the shot if needed.

      Reminds me of what my journalism professor used to say "they don't print your excuses in your caption". I never forgot that.

    Thanks, I find as an amateur I'm in the mindset to take a photo when I bring my camera with me. If I have it I tend to use it. The advice of "I am a photographer..." is very handy to remember. People don't need a long speech, short and to the point will be better.

      Exactly , you need to own that you’re a photographer w your confidence and words and not your full resume :).

    Thank you so much. This is another great one and your message echos in my heart. I was traveling DRC over xmas. I stayed in Goma city after visiting Kahuzi-Biega national park (gorilla sanctuary) near Bukavu. While I was in Goma I was told by my contact no photos in the city. However, I had a few occasions I could snap a few photos and you can guess what I did... I didn't shoot any shots and I regret so bad....

      I’m so jealous of that trip , sounds incredible. Sorry about your regrets but it’s a good lesson I suppose :).

    All of what you say is the "How To" textbook on how to get those shots. Yeah, it may be difficult. But so was riding a bicycle at first. Thanks for the great guidance.
    I grew up in the NY area. When I want to take pictures I do it until someone stops me. Most folks will acquiesce. I have never had someone break bad on me and start the "delete those pictures" on me. It won't fly in public unless they are way more aggressive than me. ;o) "Shoot first, ask questions later." So, you are on the mark.
    And I just checked out Printique; way cool. I'd better get to work on that book. ;o)

    The Dutch have a great saying, "No, we've got. Yes, we could have." In photography, we've often got bad shots (God knows), but could get good ones.

    One's ability and willingness to get "access" is an asset. I have the big secret to that - simply ask and be persistent if you don't get an answer. There are no excuses, only challenges. There are no obstacles that you can't get around if you cultivate access. When confronting bad weather, etc., - the only bad light is no light. Cultivate contacts - they I'll get you everywhere.

      I do! I make a lot of small work prints for editing and sequencing, and I recently started making some YT videos where I look at and evaluate my work in print. I’d like to make more larger prints, but I travel full time so they would only end up in a box in storage… which has its own merits, but I like to tell myself that eventually I’ll spend enough time back in the US to buy a printer and make some nice prints myself. I’d like to have that level of control.
