Great recommendations, Olly. I love the idea of the teacher writing stories to get her kids to read! I’m going to look for that one especially! 😊
Hope you enjoy it, Pat!
I love short horror...it's something I didn't discover until around 2021 when I got my Kindle and got the free Kindle Unlimited subscription...but it opened up the whole wide world of both short horror AND indie authors to me and I fell in love with both.
My absolute favorite short story collection and probably my favorite indie horror book is At Home with the Horrors by Sammy Scott. I read it in January of 2023 and I still think about some of those stories all the time. A rare case where I gave every story 4 or 5 stars...they all just worked really well for me. My favorite stories that I still think about from this collection are the ones that make me wonder what I would do if I was in those situations...and...what that says about me. Highly highly recommend.
I've not heard of Sammy Scott - I'll have to look that one up, thank you!
I think Adam L. G. Nevill is by far and away the best out there at the moment.
@ChrisBadenoch what book do you think is his best. I still think the ritual is his best work and my favourite. Not read all of his books but read most of them
Laird Barron’s new collection, Not A Speck Of Light, is superb. So is Brian Evenson’s new one, Good Night, Sleep Tight.
Thank you!
Thank you Olly for featuring Red Moon in your recommendations video, I really appreciate it! 😊😊😊😊
No problem 😊
Poe made a technical argument that horror is best on the short(esque) end for the reasons you give (and HP Lovecraft and I agree that this is generally true.)
This just reminds me I should read more short horror stories. I habe listen to a few over the years but it is rare that I read any short stories but I don't know why.
There's some great stuff out there
I picked up a Penguin collection of Horror for a friend's kid. He took a while to get to it, but he really took to it. The short form really works for Horror. We need to normalize short: literature is not an All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Glutton fest. More words does not equal better stories.
100% agree with that last statement!
@@CriminOllyBlog That said, I appreciate your submission guidelines allowing a writer room to play.
You know I ❤ short books. Thrilled to say that I have not read any of these shorties! Thanks buddy!
Hope you like them if you give them a try!
@@CriminOllyBlog You will hear about it. Good or bad. 😂
Thank you for uploading this! 💕
Wow! Thanks again Olly, for shouting out Cruel Nature. Sharing the book with your followers has given my little collection a much-needed boost. I hope the readers enjoy it. 🙏
You're very welcome!
Clive Barker will always be one of my favorite short story writers. I love baroque, elegant horror. For that reason, I also highly recommend Nathan Ballingrud. He may have the most poetic voice in modern horror fiction.
I have one of Nathan B's books to get to soon. Definitely agree about Barker
Cruel Nature is out at my local library (via the Libby app); Notify Me. Thanks for the recommendations.📚
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for pulling these collections out and bringing them to our attention. These are just the kind of things I would like and would miss. I read the lottery in high school. Yes. A classic.
My pleasure!
I read horror all year round because it's my favorite genre, but October is one of my favorite months because so many people are reading it too. I definitely need to read Cruel Nature, because I am also a teacher and I love that she wrote the book to get her students interested in reading. Thank you so much for the recommendations!
Hope you enjoy Cruel Nature!
Thanks for looking at indie books on a regular basis. As for genres, I think you're right that horror gets more attention than other indie genres, although sword & sorcery seems to have an active following.
I like the idea of some indie sword and sorcery!
There is a *ton* of indie sf and fantasy. But very little of it is any good, while a fair amount of indie horror is.
Interesting, I guess that's why I don't see it talked about much
I totally agree I often try and source indie horror. Stolen tongues and penpal are great examples of one's that done well. The latest one I read was almost ruth
I still haven't tried those 2!
could not agree more! kickers in the end in horror work perfectly. in suspense novels you usually need more than one which don't work as well. When it comes to crime - main stream publishers still just interested in middle of the road domestic noir or pushing celebrity stuff. Thank god for Indie authors and the time and effort they put in for basically zero money! Thet deserve more!!
Definitely agree!
