  • Stop Sony A7IV overheating problems
    I have a solution for the overheating that a few people have been experiencing and there is a work around that some people haven’t considered for the crop mode.
    Using APS-C lenses are a fantastic option for the crop in 4K slow motion.
    Using the Sigma 16mm f1.4, 30mm f1.4, 56mm f1.4 could be brilliant options for your Sony A7IV.
    Are you still getting overheating? Please comment

    Switch to V90 SD. Ok, guys, I'm posting that comment under every video related to Sony A7IV overheating issue, because it solved the problem for me and I'd be happy if it helps you. I've browsed through dozens of videos on that subject and most of them didn't mention that particular thing.
    Yes, auto power off temp works. Opening the screen and battery door works too. Eventually it allowed me to record 35 min instead of 15 min in 4K 100M. Better, but not perfect. External recorder, switched off linking, camera grip, etc. probably does its job as well.
    But V90 SD card instead of V30 allowed me to record a 2-hour take easily. The battery exhausted earlier.
    Maybe that's dumb, but having been an A7III user, I never thought the card would be such a gamechanger. In fact, yes. Slow cards just don't have enough capacity, being overheated while trying to process the recording, they overheat the camera internally even though it stays cool on the surface.
    Don't bother with CFExpress, just a regular V90 128G card would do the thing. At least it worked like a charm for me. Thanks for the video, Jason! 🙌

    A problem very common (unrelated to overheating) many users been reporting it in sony groups. It's the eye AF when taking pictures. When you're upclose on a subject and try to take a picture of an eye, it will always front focus, so the eye will be soft and the eyebrows or everything in front will be focused. I really hope they fix this!

    I have been considering a wide angle APSC lens for video work on the A7IV. The Sigma 16mm 1.4 sounds kickass, and it's so cheap!! Thanks for the video and the recommendations.

    i have tons of APS-C lenses incl. the SIRUI and Sigma ones and they work great on the a7iv. So i don't mind the crop, but i also use clear image zoom in Fullframe sometimes with an APS-C lens attached. With some lenses you can get away with only x1.3 and have no vignette and sometimes the vignette can be on purpose, e.g. for music videos. One question bothers me though: Is Clear Image zoom x1.5 identical to APS-C crop (which is also x.1.5). The image is identical, but is the processing too ?

    Excellent video. I have recorded 20 minutes with temperature to standard and 1 hour and 20 minutes with temperature to high until the battery exhausted. Is it safe to use the camera with temperature to high?

  • @Alexrocks1253
    @Alexrocks1253 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Guys, don’t be worried about setting the auto power off temp to high. I’ve never been burned by the camera and it doesn’t reduce the camera’s life based on experience with multiple Sony cameras . It just makes the overheating based on the temp sensor’s cutoff vs. some arbitrary temp.
    Sony wouldn’t include this setting if it reduced camera longevity or they’d be sued a ton!

    • @alirezaranjbar4213
      @alirezaranjbar4213 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      there is nothing to be sued for sony. I ruined my laptop by using it a lot for 4k editing, always on high temperature eventually died and apple didn't care. Sony wants you buy new cameras every few years, overheating and longtivity of camera is not their concern and they don't care (until guarantee ends). Don't trust any company for longevity of their product, overheating is bad specially if happens frequently to maximum. it is impossible to prove any product died because of overheating...

      @@alirezaranjbar4213 you do have a point but there haven’t been any reports of the Sony cameras dying from overheating. I’m sorry to hear about your Mac

    • @MichelleUretsky
      @MichelleUretsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alirezaranjbar4213 they do care. They’ve fixed overheating issues in previous models (like the A1, the A7III, and the A7SIII) with firmware updates. Just like a computer, the way a processor functions can be optimized and changed with firmware updates, which can change how efficient the camera is in terms of power consumption, and thus, reduce heat production.

    • @MichelleUretsky
      @MichelleUretsky 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alirezaranjbar4213 it’s also not impossible to prove that heat destroys electronics. You can literally see the effects of heat on electronics (PCBs, chips, capacitors, sensors… they can all show signs of overheating). And over the long-term, if exposed enough to high heat temperatures regularly over time, heat will kill electronics faster.
      Planned obsolescence is an issue in the tech industry (especially if we’re talking about Apple products, and I’m not hating-I highly dislike Android, so I have an iPhone), but it’s not nearly as prevalent in cameras. Reason being is that lenses generally hold their value, and can be easily sold on the secondary market. Companies would prefer that you continue buying their products rather than switch to the products of a competitor. If a consumer is unhappy with the lifespan of their camera and feel that they did not get enough use out of it for the money spent on it, they can easily sell off their lenses (or get lens adapters) and switch to a competing brand of camera instead of continuing to invest in expensive glass for the camera they had. If they keep their customers happy with their camera bodies, they’ll keep buying new lenses for it. And they’ll be more likely to buy multiple different (or even the same) camera bodies that can all use the same lenses (lots of pro photographers use multiple bodies at events so that they don’t have to take the time to switch out lenses and possibly miss important shots. They just pick up their other camera bodies with different lenses already attached and ready, which takes much less time and effort).
      So while yes, technology companies usually plan obsolescence of their products, it doesn’t happen as much with cameras. That’s why you can still buy really old, used film, digital, DSLR, and mirrorless cameras and they’ll still work wonderfully. Camera companies want you to continue putting money into your kit-but they also don’t want to lose you to a competitor. Planned obsolescence, short lifespans, and other issues turn consumers off to brands. Companies want consumers to upgrade to another model of camera as technology progresses, but also they want consumers to stay with their brand when doing so. Sony wants the person who has had a Sony A6000 to stick Sony when they upgrade to a full-frame camera… or even to the latest in the A6*** series. They don’t want you to start looking at Nikon or Canon or Fujifilm or Leica or Lumix…
      People accept it with phones because people are married to operating systems. If you’re a fan of Apple, you won’t likely move to an Android device unless Apple does something so egregious that you are incensed to switch. You’ll just buy the newer iPhone. It’s the only choice if you like Apple. With Android, it’s about the same (Samsung is definitely the company with the largest Android system market share). They know that people really have no choice-so they get away with it easier.
      With new cameras being developed constantly by several quality companies, there’s actual competition they have to worry about.

    • @MichelleUretsky

      @@alirezaranjbar4213 and Apple is one of those companies that, if it’s out of warranty, they don’t give a flying f***.
      Sorry to hear about your Mac. Perhaps check out a gaming laptop PC. Razer makes really nice laptops with high build quality. You get more for your money hardware-wise with PC machines over Apple. You paying to stay in the Apple ecosystem. If you’re not married to their programs and OS, just get a powerful Windows-based machine. Gaming laptops are usually the most powerful/capable. Razer isn’t the only one that makes a nice gaming laptop, but it’s my recommendation. It’s as sleek as a Mac, and doesn’t have the aggressive gamer look that so many do. Lenovo and Asus are also good, and Acer is as well (they used to be a company I wouldn’t recommend, but they’ve bettered their products over the years). I would advise you to stay far away from Dell/Alienware. But, I’d recommend Razer at the top, hands-down, at this point in time. They have several with gorgeous 120hz OLED Adobe RGB displays. Feel free to comment back if you need advice. There is over 50 years of professional IT/electronics experience in my household. I’d be happy to help you find a computer right for you and in your budget. Unless you’re married to Apple… because then, you only have a limited choice and probably don’t need help with that 🤣.

    Hi all. I had posted this on another video about overheating. I did some tests on my A74. I recorded in 10bit 4K 4.2.2 H.265 (the XAVC HS mode) on my A74. I put it on a tripod in a 72 degree F room. In 24P it recorded for 1 hour and 53 minutes when the battery died. No overheat warning or shutdown. After a long cooldown. I used the same codec H.265 4.2.2 4k, but at 60fps on a tripod in the same 72 degree F room and recorded for 1 hour and 42 minutes - which is when the battery died. No overheat warnings or overheat shutdown. Maybe the H.265 helped with the longer 60fps record time, or maybe it was because I had it on a tripod. Not sure. I also tried the 10bit H.265 HS 4.2.0 Codec in 24fps and 60fps and got essentially the same times as the 4.2.2 H.265 HS times. I normally record in the HS 4.2.0 mode, as I like the smaller file sizes, it edits easily on almost any computer ( since it's the 4.2.0 Codec, and most Macs and PC's have hardware optimization for that particular H.265 Codec). I always record in Slog 3, and I have yet to be able to discern any color grading flexibility difference between the 4.2.2 codec or the 4.2.0 codec in any footage I have ever shot. I haven't seen any limitation of the 4.2.0 10 bit H.265 HS codec in any color grading pushes, Noise Reduction, or effects. It all grades just as well as the 4.2.2. Hope this is helpful.

    What's up brother, yesterday was my first actual shoot with it. I have done two shoots but one was filming a quick b-roll reel my client just for personal use. super short and maybe a total of filming 30 minutes and did not have issues. Yesterday was a bridal shower shoot. Inside and outside with high temps in LA of 85 F. I used the kit lens 28-70 filming in 4k 60 just because I was using my primes with my 7iii on the gimble and used handheld with small rig for 7iv. I got overheating with in filming 1 hour off and on switching between the two cameras. I was already expecting to experience it but not that quick! I am thankful I had two cameras and let it cool down. I took screen out but I don't know if that helped much. Using pro SD cards not type c but some are coming! However I was very disappointed because I don't even feel comfortable as summer is coming and a lot of weddings coming up. I defenently will be getting external battery for this and type c cards but I am hoping for a firmware update asap. I love the camera 100% other than that! I am a hybrid shooter for personal, real estate, corporate and lifestyle stuff. So its the perfect all around camera and your videos are what convinced me to pull the trigger on upgrading from the a7iii. Thanks again for all the great content!

    The 4K 60fps crop issue has never been an issue for me. If you plan out your shots, or expect to be in small spaces, than bring wider lenses with you. Everyone has known since before the A7iv was released that it shoots 4K 60 in a cropped mode. So, to complain about it after it’s release is pretty stupid in my book. If you don’t like the crop, don’t buy the camera.

    my Sony a7iv was bought in DEC'23. it performs like a champ for photos. this past week did my first video shoot in 4K 4:2:2 and didn't know about the 'high' setting and it kept overheating after 2-3 min. after knowing about this setting along with turning into airplane mode, was able to record for 15min, no issues. was under 2.0 firmware, now also updated to v3.0 - good thing this was an internal company shooting event and not a customer shoot.

    I have been doing days if 7-IV heat testing for several hours at a time. I am using the Sony battery grip while plugged into USB-C PD power indoors. So far, I have had zero problems with high highest temp recording at 127 degrees. Most temps sit at the low to mid 120's. I suspect the grip is making a big difference as that "battery" is a "dummy" that does not generate heat.(all tests at 4k, 30p)

      Same thing happening here to mine. It is new out of the box. It keeps shutting down after over heating and like yours the camera body is actually hot. The room I am in is not however so I have no idea what is happening. I have a lens on it and the screen is open at the back to in the hope that will allow heat to escape. No idea why this is happening. It doesn't feel great after spending 2800 Euro on the body. Happened to me in the menus after less than 15 minutes, several times. I was checking your video about remapping the back buttons. Open screen, 20°C in the room. No lens though. I got through 1 64GB SD card (33 minutes) and a bit of another (totaling about 41 minutes of record time) before the temp warning came on. Pulling the screen away from the body at that point made the temp warning icon go away. Got the rest of the way through card 2 without the warning coming back. I found that changing the LCD screen quality to standard also helped. Check it out. Found this on reddit....
    EDIT/UPDATE: Looks like in my scenario, dual SD card slot recording was the main overheating culprit. It makes sense as dual card slot recording means more work, more heat and another SD card heating up the internals. Not everyone dual records so this won't be an issue for a lot of people. But if you do like dual recording, either for proxies or to have an immediate backup of your footage, overheating may cause issues with the dual recording method.
    In the same room with ambient temps of 20 degrees Celsius / 68 Fahrenheit, 4K60 10bit 422 IBP, tripod and flip screen out, but SINGLE card slot recording instead of dual slot recording, I was able to record for 1 hour and 18 minutes before the overheating symbol came on. So another half an hour or so of additional record time compared to my original test.
    However, coming from an a7SIII, I'm still used to shooting 4K60 10bit 422 in direct sunlight outdoors on a hot summer day without ever getting the overheating symbol. So the a7IV still underperforms in that regard but it should still do the job for many people as long as you work within it's overheating limitations.
    EDIT #2: Tried 4K 24 10bit 422, recording to 1 card slot, did not overheat at all. Warning symbol did not come up once.

      i might add that it may makes things worse if you have a HDMI monitor attached and also additional power via USB-C. These seem to create even more heat inside the camera. The issue here is, that we always have HDMI monitors attached and recording a 2-3 hour live event needs additional power too, so the USB-C power is used to extend the battery life while recording.

    i've got the new Sony A7IV since december and i've shoot some videos for social media and in all days i've got overheating issues. 30 minutes and the camera shows overheating icon. The only way to have more time to shoot before overheating icon is to open battery tap and screen, and also record video to my ninja V. Doing it in this way, i've got 45-50 minutes before overheating icon. I'm planning to use a Vmont battery to avoid a little bit of overheating... i've been using GH5 since 2017 and never got overheating issues. I know M43 is not FF camera, and there are another thing than can cause overheating, but for a 3800 euros camera it's too bad having overheating problems. We have to deal with it, but it's too painful. (sorry my english) Greetings from spain!!!

    No issue with overheating yet, first thing I did on Nov 25 when I got it in Hong Kong, was set the Temp to High.
    The autofocus is a pretty huge upgrade from A7iii, despite what people think it’s a marginal upgrade. Loving the AF, way more snappy, almost no hunting even at low light (I mostly take pics of food I have at restaurants and they usually have port lighting). Way quicker and sharp focus than the A7iii, and used it in a zoo for a full day, no problem whatsoever, animal eye AF gotten better, bird eye AF still just okay since some birds are confusing to the camera.
    Really glad I upgraded!

    Just got my iV today. After 20 minutes making changes to the settings, it overheated and shut off. Not even in the sun. I live in AZ so this camera might not be a good viable solution...

      Turn the auto temp setting to high, put a lens on and flip the screen out. You won’t have issues

    I haven't had any overheating issues at all since I've tested it on my first day receiving the camera. Here's my setting for testing overheating:
    1. 4K/60fps (200m)
    2. 10-bit
    3. S-cinetone
    4. PNY Pro Elite V30 256gb UHS-i card
    5. Dual simultaneously video recording
    6. Steady Shot
    7. Temperature (High)
    8. Room Temps at 73 degrees
    9. XAVC S codec
    I recorded to 43 minutes since i had to leave after that. Not once did I get an overheating warning and was impressed that both the V30 cards were able to keep up recording the 4K/60fps footage. Though I was pushing it as the camera was hitting average temps of 105 degrees based on my thermal gun readings. I'm going to test my camera again to see if I can get overheating at one hour or recording time.

      Any update a year later! I'm hesitant to pick up an A7IV solely because of over heating. But I'm seeing quite a bit of positive feedback. I'll be using it mainly in warmer climates in 4k 60p for video and obviously photography.

      @@adam_jumps Oh yes, i have updates. Overheating is there if you're using any card that is V60 and below. V90 and Type A cards both worked great with no overheating issues in 4K/60fps, XAVC-S, 10-bit colors, S-cinetone and steadyshot on. I was recording in 80s degree weather so I did have the a7iv shut down on many times when reaching the 20 minutes and beyond recording time. When I used V90 and Type A cards with the same setting, the overheating symbol shown up but it didn't shut the camera down. My advice is to start using V60, V90 and Express Type A cards to avoid overheating. With so much data being transfer to the memory cards, its best to get a fast write speed card. Leave the V30 cards for photographs now.

    I just got my a7IV today. I've been a GH5 shooter and have been very happy with them. After messing with my a7IV settings for the past 30 minutes it got hot and overheated and shut down. I'm seeing others solutions in the comment section to turn off the overheat setting but my question is why does it get hot in the 1st place? A camera shouldn't get that hot so quickly. I can run my GH5 cameras in the Sun at an all day wedding shoot and not even come close to getting hot like this a7IV.

    Mine overheats if I look thru the menu too long. Screen open, overheat setting left at default.

    Nice with the Sigma 16 F/1.4 but what if......Samyang 18mm AF F/2.8 or Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 for video. No compromise for the full frame look and still affordable.

      Both great lenses but I am talking about 4K 60fps. Having an f1.4 lens is very advantageous.
