The Abandoned New Row Methodist Graveyard | Blackburn

- Built in 1828, the site upon which the chapel still stands was the gift of Mr. G. W. Turner, who was a prosperous calico printer with a business in Stakes Hall, Mill Hill. He was also Member of Parliament for the Borough of Blackburn, and an inscription over the door of the chapel shows his initials, G. W. T. 1828.
The Grade II listed chapel was extended and upgraded several times in the 19th Century.
We managed to find out that after closing in 2011 (some records show that it closed in 2011 but we found a headstone dated 2017?) , the chapel and its surroundings were put up for sale before finally being purchased towards the back end of 2022 by a private buyer for over £100,000. Local residents were worried about the future of the graves and those buried within the graveyard.

I used to live in a row of cottages which bordered the graveyard and my bedroom overlooked it. I remember the chapel being used for Sunday services and it being quite well attended at the time. I used to walk through the graveyard to reach the farm where I worked. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and look forward to seeing more of the same from you.
Thans Antony. We were surprised by how many headstones and burial places there were because from the lane, it didnt look that big. We searched the place using Google Maps to try and get a sense to its location and as to the state of the place. Its a fantastic place to visit if you are interested in the history or indeed if people are looking into their ancestry. Its one place we will definately be revisiting too as Im already looking for stories from around that area that may have people interred there.
Love the graveyard walks. I think it's disgusting when access to the graves are denied when the chapels are sold. At the end of the day, the plots have been bought by the families. Thank you for sharing.
I agree with you!
Totally agree. Thanks for watching and commenting Shelia 😊
I absolutely adore these old abandoned graveyards, I know some need some TLC but as long as I can get around safely, I kind of love that nature reclaims
I know what you mean about nature reclaiming the land, it kind of feels life a full circle of life. We are born, we grow old, we die, we are buried with the land which then consumes us. A bit macarbe I know. But it also give the graveyards something a little more interesting and dare I say, intriguing, to go and look at. We have filmed another video today from an abandoned graveyard and that will be up next weekend 👍
@Days of Horror brilliant Chris, I know exactly what you're saying, they are so unique like a treasure trove of history.
The old graveyards have so much history on the gravestones. It's so sad to see that over a substantial time period many of them have been left so that the grass overgrows many of the headstones. Definitely no maintenance been done there. Thanks for sharing 👍👍
😊
We like these videos, really interesting, thanks you Chris and Vicki.
Many thanks, Keith. We have loads more to come.
Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
Keep these doing videos I love graveyards thank you.
More to come! Thanks for watching
We do try mainly to retell old crime stories and follow up with visits to their graves, but on odd occasions actually go out and visit /cover them 😊
I love old graveyards it's a shame it's been left to overgrow thank you very good!
I think there is a certain mystique when it comes to long and forgotten graveyards. I wouldn't say any of them are scary or frightening as some people have often told me, but I find them more intriguing. The added presence of overgrown vegetation, moss and trees always add to the mystery of who is buried within them, but as you say, it is also a shame they ARE left to overgrow and the people buried within them are being forgotten about.
I'll always love this cemetery. I used to live on Heys Close. This was our playground when we were kids. We loved the horses that lived on the land to the right of it (to the right when you're facing the graveyard). We pronounce it "liv-see".
There have been many cleanup attempts, volunteers and even community service groups trying to tidy it up but unfortunately, nothing is ever maintained for a long period of time.
It's a very interesting place to visit. We are going to be going back again and to try and find some individual stories of those buried there. It's a pity it's being left neglected, and it would be mammoth ask to bring it back to its original splendour.
Like i said i in joy your great video work guys
Thank you, really appreciate your kind words and support 😊
There used to be an angel monument years ago - rather spooky. I think it stood up to the end of the seventies before it disappeared (pinched). I have family buried there but with no real headstone, quite near to the back of the chapel but anyone who knows the details are long gone themselves. Great video and hats off to TH-cam for sending this my way today.
Hi there 👋 We have driven past this place so many times before and we said we would go one day and do a video. It's a shame it's becoming overrun with all the brakcen, weeds etc but it's so full of history and stories. Thanks for commenting and I hope you find some of the stories here interesting.
Watched this last night and enjoyed the video. It's interesting seeing the different types of memorials, graves and hearing some of the stories associated with them. It's sad to think that these graves have been left and nobody pays them a visit anymore. A shame it's been left in that state too. I hope someone will tidy the area up and give those poor souls recognition once again, which is what you do. 🙏 keep up with the great videos 👍
Hopefully the new owners will not just maintain (which essentially means keep as it is) but repair it. It should be in built that if graveyards become 'private' they're looked after. Seen so many in total disrepair these last couple of years.
My Grandfather; My Grandmother; his brother and wife; And my great Grandfather and his wife are buried in there...
Aww thats lovely, but just ashame of the upkeep of it. 😊
I’ve just watched the video and you have shown the grave of my grandparents and great grandparents (the one with the Christmas pot). It’s such a shame that the graveyard has fallen into such a poor state. Hopefully, the new owners of the chapel will maintain the site. I don’t live in the area anymore, but go every 2 or 3 months to keep the grave tidy. In the words of the Blues singer, Blind Lemon Jefferson, “See That My Grave’s Kept Clean”. It’s not much to ask, is it?
Nice vlog. Love the history of blackburn.
Bring more vlogs like this please
Hi Fatima, many thanks for that. We have done a couple of stories from Blackburn, and we have many many more lined up. We try to rotate where we go as not to saturate one area too much. But we definately have a lot more to cover in and around Blackburn 😀
I found this:
noun
plural noun: sappers
a soldier responsible for tasks such as building and repairing roads and bridges, laying and clearing mines, etc.
Hi , I enjoy watching these videos , find them really interesting. It's a shame the most of the grave are not looked after . Look forward to watching more of these videos.
Hi Sue, thanks for the kind comments. We have a lot of cemetery and graveyard walks planned for this year. Some of which look kind of like the one in this video, abandoned or neglected. I say neglected as some of them are still fully operational churches with weekly sermons ongoing, and yet the graveyards need some attention! But we also have quite a few that are well looked after and with many interesting headstones with stories behind them.
I would love to see more videos like this one it is interesting to watch I really enjoyed watching it thank you X🤗
Thanks for watching Donna!
You hope the new owner get in and give it a good clean up
of the yard
It is now privately owned, and the husband and wife are doing a tremendous job in making the place into a home, as well as working to maintain the grounds.
Let's hope 🙏
I grew up in Vermont USA, there are beautiful cemeteries in the area i grew up in. My grandma Moses would take my sister and i when we were young to these graveyards. The stones dated from the mid 1600 . There are many marble quarries in the area, this lead to amazing head stones. We would do grave stone rubbings. They were beautful stones and the cemetery would have fountains. I have always loved cemetery, i find them a place of peace and God. In rhe cemetery my parents are bured in there is a beautiful grave stone of a Native American Indian Princess who married a weathy man in Chester Vermont.
Nice one my friend keep them coming absolutely Brilliant
This is so sad, a graveyard that still has graves that are being tended is in such disrepair. Also recent burials, the families will have paid a fortune for those plots and in less than 20 years for some the grounds are in a derelict state. I remember the chapel being up for sale I hope the owners do something to preserve this piece of history. A group like the friends of Blackburn old cemetery is needed I think. I also wanted to say I don’t think you should worry too much about walking over graves you are showing respect. I’m sure Ada would be so proud to know her much loved Edna is being remembered all these years later.
Hi Bee, thanks for the kind words. It is shocking how these places can end up looking. We went to another early last year which was even worse and whilst there weren't too many graves, it doesn't detract from the fact people are buried there and perhaps a generation of family members are still around now who may not know their ancestors are there and even if they did, they most likely wouldn't be able to locate them. The video is here : th-cam.com/video/j2kAtlv8Bmc/w-d-xo.html
We also have another video upcoming which, whilst the church is still being used and is in an immaculate condition, many of the graves are neglected with vegetation taking over. How they end up like this shocks me and Vickie.
@@DaysofHorror thank you I will watch that one after I’ve had my very late tea.
The area is pronounced 'Liv' 'Sey'. It's not far from where I live. I hadn't realised how extensive the graveyard is. As you say it looks smaller from the road. It is a real shame that it is not better maintained. There was quite a bit of controversy when the Chapel was up for sale. It was actually sold prior to 2022, but Covid came along and I think that it was put up for sale again. I could be wrong with the sale information and I don't think the whole graveyard was part of the sale, just a small portion of the land. I find it sad that the war graves are neglected and abandoned. The probability is the connected family have either moved away from the area, to old or have died out.
It was a very good video. I am going to share it to the local Facebook page and see what comments there are.
Hi Janette. Thanks for the info, it ties up a few loose ends. We just read about the sale from an article in Nov. 2022 but as you say, COVID probably did block any movements on it prior to 2022. It will be a mammoth task for anyone to undertake the maintenance of the grounds as much of it has now sadly overgrown 😟 Also, thanks for sharing! Any help is always gratefully appreciated by myself and Vickie.
@@DaysofHorror If I get any further information I will let you know.
I have been informed that New Row Chapel was closed by 2011, but burials were still taking place. There is more information on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project. There is a Grave map and plot details. It seems to suggest that there were over 7000 burials. I hope this helps.
@@gingermolly234 I was on that website last night and downloaded all those maps. I was going to use them in the video but couldnt really find a place for them. It was also confusing us yesterday, as when filming, we saw a couple of headstones dated 2015, 2017 etc and yet this morning I read it had closed in 2011, so yeah, that kind of confused me. Thanks for all the info though, we do appreciate it.
@@DaysofHorror You're very welcome. I can confirm that the graveyard was not part of the sale of the Chapel.
31:03 you had trouble reading this due to the ground coverage.

The 'War Graves Commission' look after the war graves. Any damage to them they usually quickly replace. Sadly, in most cases, the bodies are not in the grave itself, and usually not even this country 😕
I know pretty much zero when it comes to much of war time history Im afraid to say. It is something I really need to get into as I think there are probably many, many stories that could be unearthed from those who went to war from around where we live.
Poor Vickie, she looks freezing.
I have to admit, it was cold that morning we did this video 🤣
My Great Grandparents are buried up behind the chapel..their headstone looks like a Chess piece on a Chessboard
We are planning on going back at some point this year so we will keep a look out for that. It's a remarkable place if I'm being honest and neither of us realised just how big the place was until we got there.
Hope the new owner is good gardener , because it takes bit of time to tidy it up if does that
It get more respect from locals from Wyre Tom
This is something we talked about driving home from the place. Its all good and well buying the chapel and saying you are going to look after the surrounding graves, but at what expense? I mean, its going to cost a fortune and the time it will take is unimaginable. Not only that, it will be a case of having to keep on top of the grass cutting as well as maintaining some of the headstones so to make sure they pose no danger to the public.
I can't decide if this is my favourite graveyard you've been to or the pet one or the Darwin one or Highgate but there all very nice. I thought Burnleys was very nice till I saw them. But yea more grave yard walks please
For me, it has to be the Verona Monumental cemetery we visited in Rome back in last December. It was just so huge with many, old fascinating headstones.
@DaysofHorror yea I haven't got to that video yet but I can imagine it was nice
Thankyou, found this fascinating, as I do all of your filming and insights. Just wondered if you have ever heard of the elderly lady that ran a shop at the top of Princess St in Great Harwood, she was brutally murdered and I don't know if they ever arrested anyone, it was in the early 70s and she may have been called Mrs Seed, but not sure,
I think so. Something about that sounds familiar. Was it a sweet shop?
@@DaysofHorror Yes it was, I think she sold a few groceries and tobacco too
I took my pooch up there a few years ago and she wouldn’t go in. Something upset her.
Hiya x
Hiya back 😁
I tried to go to goodshaw chapel graveyard crawshawbooth (the old chapel) many years ago and couldn’t gain entry as did my mum as my great grandma and grandad are there not sure if you can get in now but going to try again soon
We have been in contact with the new owners of the property who are currently in the process of renovating the old chapel. I'll contact them now and see if its okay for people to visit the graveyard and I'll let you know as soon as I hear back.
@@DaysofHorror thank you so much!!! It would mean the world to me and to my mum especially
@@donnafoulds2773We tried to get into the grounds last year when we visited the old church opposite and we were the same, locked outside! Very odd how they have locked the entrance to it but we will see what happens. Fingers crossed we can get you inside.
@@DaysofHorror they did close it due to vandalism but had a number on the gate, they never answered when you rang though hence how long it it is since we visited the grave. It’s a damn shame when there is family members in grave you cannot visit. The plot was first bought in 1934 but my great grandmas ashes where buried with her husband in 1999. It’s a sad story but one of a strong women who I remember fondly.
