    Drove about forty miles to find this pub about 30 years ago. Saw not a soul on the way, and Doolin seemed deserted. The only other pub was boarded up. Walked in to Gus O'Connor's and half of Ireland was in there. At eleven the place shut. Food was served and the music began. They let us out after some breakfast at about 7.00.

    Over ten years ago my friend and I were in that Pub. What a night. The sound, the rhythm was incredable. We have been in a few pubs in Dublin but the skill of those who played in Doolin made my friend and I soar. In that very night we found the true heart of Ireland.

    I never understood why Americans didn't establish these types of traditions with Bluegrass music. Probably happens some places, but definitely not commonplace.

    • @OSTARAEB4
      @OSTARAEB4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As you stated, in some parts of the USA like hill country as some call it these type of get togethers do occur. Whether you're American or not, the music and definitely the food specialties change from region to region and even from State to State. Take barbecue as an example and 'Southern cooking" sweet and heavy, or fried compared to say the Midwest or Northeast where seafood in the NE is primarily comes to mind.

      We have a weekly Old Timey/Americana session in Fresno, CA, that has started up again. We have an Irish session too. Big cities have Irish sessions and probably some have Bluegrass/Old Timey sessions as well. Check online where you are. If there's a folklore society, someone will know where to go.

    Gah! I just visited the Clare region last month and didn't make it north of Miltown Malbay. Doolin and O'Connor's pub are going straight on my “next visit to Ireland” list. It will be my 4th visit. Notes to visitors: Miltown Malbay is, in itself, a charming, friendly small town in Country Clare. Personally, I love its haberdashery store, and recommend Friels pub (aka Lynch's) who serve mean gin & tonics from local producers. The Westbridge bar/pub is great, too. My fussy husband enjoyed coffee from The Frozen Spoon - a hot pink place, you can’t miss it. We got takeaway potato & leek soup with buttered homemade bread for dinner one night from The Old Bakehouse, a red place - their soup & bread were simple, delicious and just brilliant. The town is easy walking, and showcases its colourful history very proudly and well. County Clare in general is special. I suggest you plan to stay in the area at least a night or two - don’t rush through it.

    It was our first time to Ireland from the States. We had motored from Galway to the West coast and stumbled upon Gus O’Connor’s; it was a typical Irish day: overcast, chilly and drizzling. We sat at the bar, the peat fire was glowing and the room was filled with that distinct smoky aroma. We had a magnificent lunch of fish chowder, brown bread and Guinness. It’s a memory that we cherish to this very day; that was on September 10, 2001, the day before the world changed forever.

      Queen Maeve from Connacht took her ship to London to see the Queen of England, Elizabeth Tudor, in order to get her son released from prison. Elizabeth's Palace minders and officials did their best to block her entry but they failed.
      When the two differently dressed Queens met, they got on great with each other and spoke in Irish Gaelic. Elizabeth was lots of things, not all of them good, but she was a polyglot go raibh gaeilge aice.
      Maeve succeeded in getting her son released from jail, much to the annoyance of the Court minders.

    Crap...the same basic tune, poorly played over and over in an overcrowed tourist trap setting , with the main focus on selling food. O'connors was once a fine pub with some great musicians and sessions..but it's now a stage for weekly shite like this, focused on raking in tourist money. The comments below show that the bluff obvioulsy works... don't confuse this with good Irish traditional music..this is SHITE, Gus O'Connors is scorned on these days by most good players who give it a wide berth.
