I think platform shoes are a macro trend too. They're kind of like a sister to the wide-leg pants trend. We've seen so many iterations of it (the "hey let's take this already popular shoe and make it platform" micro trends, Crocs, Converse etc) and they die quickly but the platform itself hasn't gone out of style.
i remember watching a video (i think on moderngurlz) about how the height of shoes has a direct correlation to the state of the economy and it was really interesting
i disagree. while platforms had a biiig moment and probably will continue to be sold sold like the ones you said (uggs, converse, crocs), i feel like platforms are on their way out and the new macro trend is flat shoes (sambas, ballet flats)
Gold jewellery and knee high boots are indeed timeless, I've never seen someone wear one and I've looked on and thought 'that's dated' or that they have ever been out of style. Precious metals do not go out of trend, neither do knee high boots (unless they're an unusual colour or have a very distinct toe). I wouldn't call either a macro trend, some things just don't enter the 'trendy' space but are timeless basics. Like a white t-shirt. Just because something isn't an 'it' item for a season doesn't mean it is a macro trend, some items transcend trends and just become staples. I grew up in Paris and a few items we always had were black knee high boots, a pair of classic boot cut jeans, a good winter coat (usually long and black wool).
I think it depends what one puts into the meaning of "timeless". Gold jewellery and knee-high boots might not ever feel wrong per se, but there will definitely be times where their opposites (e.g. silver, ankle boots) will feel more on trend and fashionable. But I also think it's hard to draw a line like that because gold jewellery/knee-high boots are such big categories of accessories/garments/wearables. There will always be more trendy cuts and styles within those groups, even if the group as a whole are not the #1 trend at that moment.
Also, I feel like it's impossible to just describe something as "knee-high boots" or "gold jewellery". There will always be other factors that decide if they feel right for the time/more or less trendy. Be it square toes vs. rounded toes, platforms vs. stilettos, statement necklace vs. dainty necklace. Knee-high is basically just a cut, and gold just a metal/color.
@@macja5167 Something being MORE 'in trend' as you describe doesn't mean other things are therefore inherently out of trend. I'm using gold jewellery in the context she is using it, in a very general and broad sense relating to fine jewellery - like engagement rings, as she stated. Rose gold? Yes, this goes in and out of trend. Gold/silver? Always in trend, there's never a lull. One might be MORE trendy/popular at a certain time, but this does not mean the other is therefore dated. As I said with knee-high boots in my original comment, it depends on the toe and the colour of the boot. When I'm talking about these points I'm referring to the very generalised, broad spectrum of the concept of a knee-high boot that is a staple - black or tan, no unusual cut/colour/material. These things quite literally are never out of style.
as a filipina from hawai‘i the gold jewelry part i do disagree with- gold is so rooted in my culture and so many other poc cultures that i think it is defff timeless. we have gold heirlooms that are passed down through generations like bangles, pendants, etc. maybe its just more of a trend for those outside of these ethnic groups?
This would be so fun to discuss trend vs timeless for different cultures! I’ve also always had/gotten gold jewelry from my grandparents in Italy- but I didn’t wear it from like 2010-2014!
I tried to think about items that I've not stopped wearing/liking the last 10 years (since I was 14), and I think it is doc martens, tote bags, hoop earrings, high neck lines, high socks, OS tshirts and sweatshirts, polo shirts, and for the last like 5 years are claw clips, maxi skirts, oval-ish sunglasses, pearl necklaces, big shirts during the summers. Maybe some of these are timeless/classics but I think it is so intresting to think about what has lasted in your wardrobe and I think that just more and more things are gonna stay in my wardrobe as I get less influtial the older I become
I don't think that the pieces you described are timeless or marcro trends, I think they are your personal style which is very influenced by your teen years. I have the theory that sometime in our youth, most of us find our personal style and just keep on wearing that (or slightly updated pieces). Especially if we do not work in fashion. For example: I was a teenager in the 2006-2015 and if you think about it, black skinny jeans are not that different from black flared leggings, so switching to them felt very natural to me, while wearing low cut baggy jeans does not. It's a mixture of personal taste and macro or micro trending in your teen years.
40 and a fashion girlie. In complete honesty. The macro trends happening now were sooo big when I was in high school/college. I had a pair of pink patent pointed flats with buckles that I wore the soles through… I am jonsing for a red version of this now. I also had a pair of knee high boots that I wore the sole off of. Fashion cycles are moving so much faster now due to social media, overconsumption and influencers. Also personal style doesn’t seem to exist anymore for the same reason. Im ready for personal style to make a comeback.
I totally agree that the peasant style tops and dresses have been here and are staying for a while! To me they feel like part of the current interpretation of undergarments on the outside, which is pretty much aaallways around in one way or another. The peasant tops we’re seeing now are all so inspired by vintage undergarments like the chemise, the corset cover - pieces typically made of lightweight white cotton or linen, with gathers and pintucks and trim, and fastenings (I.e. bows!) for getting in and out of them instead of stretchy material. So refreshing and comfortable compared to the synthetics in so many clothes on the market! I’m into it. I love thinking about fashion in this way, and I loved hearing your takes! When I finally let go of the pressure to have a “timeless” wardrobe, I had a total breakthrough with my style. Your videos absolutely helped inform that change in perspective ❤️❤️
I personally think ballet flats are already and will continue to be a macro trend. Maybe not the square toe one, but I think we've been seeing the classic round toe with a tie bow style since 2020, and I personally predict they'll be the cute feminine shoe choice for around ten years. Then they'll fall out of style. But I'll always be wearing them, because I never stopped wearing them lol.
i think that cottage core itself is a macro trend! we’ve seen so many variations and run off micro trends but the cottage vibe in general has been around for a hot minute and will be around for a while longer. it’s almost like the “boho” of the 2020s
Yes and no. Sometimes it can be down to the chain. There are chain styles that were popular when I was a teen in the 80s that still look tacky...the gold herringbone. But I have always worn silver since then, but some pieces I had to put away bc they looked a little too booth at a dead show or hot topic
Love the idea of focusing on macro trends! I am 39 so I have been able to enjoy everything for at least one cycle previously, and it’s been fun! If you view fashion from the lens of macro yrends you will be less likely to look back at outfits and cringe, and most likely figure out your personal style.
To me timeless is something that transcends time, that has been around throughout all the modern fashion era, so I’d consider timeless a black dress, a ballet flat, gold jewellery, red lipstick, stilettos ecc… A macro trend is something that has been around for a solid amount of time but not enough to be timeless also because it’s usually embrace by a specific group of the population for instance teens ; so I’d consider air force, wide leg jeans, uggs as macro trends. A micro trend is even more specific in terms of target and how long it lasts, like the leather motorcycle jackets were a micro trend in my opinion
@@automatic5 yeah I was specifically referring to the motorcycle/racing one that was super trending last year and currently nowhere to be seen; I think microtrends are just a very specific version of a certain item that trends for a season and then it’s out of the market
my uo is no style of clothing will ever be out again. A specific garment design (i.e. the yellow maxi with the big red flower) or constume-y "aesthetic" may lose popularity due to its ubiquity but a regular maxi dress will always be popular, pair of ballet flats will remain in. A skinny belt and wide belt will be in at the same time. Platforms or slinky heels will never be "out". Too many ppl have moved away from being defined by in and out lists and are mood based dressers.
I feel like wide leg jeans only started being popular in 2020? It felt like the 2010s were all about the skinny jeans… Idk I remember only noticing the shift in 2020
I feel like the recent adaptation of peasant style tops has been very micro trendy. Like even brands taking dainty bows and overusing them in every single piece they make when some things would look so much better without it.
Anything boho seems to come and go every few years, which is my usual aesthetic so I never stop wearing it, specially peasant skirts. Canadian Tuxedo is always in style I feel like, can never go wrong with an all denim look. And I agree with the knee high boots, which I literally wear every fall anyway 😊 I would also add a combat boot onto that trend, I feel like once a year Dr. Martens (or similar chunky boots) are super trendy and I love them to grunge down super girly outfits 🙌🏽
I'm feeling that silver is coming back too, too many influencers sporting layers of gold chains which, lets face it, are a recipe for disaster when it comes to untangling...and once a look looks Pinterestish, it's time for it to go...
I feel like this also pertains to “ peasant garments” because they have been worn under clothes and inspired by clothes worn a very long time ago, and continue to be worn.
Oh, if only, but wide leg trousers were definitely not worn in the 80s and 90. Back then it would look like you were wearing your mother's hand me downs from the 70s.
Hmmm I actually feel like a lot of these are timeless pieces?? Collars, knee high boots, and gold/silver jewelry have all been worn for centuries. Even ballet flats have come into timelessness, as since they’ve come into being, they’ve never actually stopped being worn. Maybe just less visible within the sphere of your personal world and influences. For me this makes me ask not if the piece is timeless or a macro trend, but if the styling of timeless pieces is a macro trend? Can you do a video where you style looks that you think would be timeless through and through? And maybe even vs looks that involve timeless pieces but lean towards macro trends? Hope that makes sense!
Love this video!!! It always bothers me when people talk so much about certain items that are in fashion rather than looking what actually makes it a trend overall. Super interesting video :))
The only time I can remember peasant tops not being in vogue was in the 80s. 60s, 70s... 90s. Even before the 60s. I think they periodically go out of style, but not for very long.
I think it's becoming more popular to use the jewelry. That's best for your color season. I remember when I was a little kid. The color seasons were kind of trendy and the older woman stuck with it for the rest of their lives. Because you obviously want to look best in your best colors. I look so much better now.I know i'm a winter and needs silver or white gold
Maybe I'm wrong but you were showing midi skirts...some acutal maxi but I think of maxis being all the way to the ankels or floor...under the knee or e en mid calf to me are midi skirts.
I feel like there is overlap between macro trends and timeless pieces. Most more conventional/non-extreme cuts of jeans (bootcut, tapered, slightly wider leg, etc.) are timeless in that they will never be fully "out", but what is more or less trendy will change over time. For example, I feel like Levi's 501s had a peak in trendiness a few years ago when the high waist mom jeans were most popular, but no one is ever going to question someone wearing 501s. I'd argue that a piece doesn't have to be either a macro trend or timeless, it can be both.
Obviously micro trends are very 2020's bc of social media, but there must have been similar small trends during earlier decades too. So it's cool to think about what we're gonna remember from the 2020's as a whole! :D
I agree with your take on this but I dont know where to put the fact that I used to wear most of those things as a toddler/child. It was back in 2004-2012. Does it mean that those makro trends started before 2006? Because I dont think so? Whats with that? And Im sure Im not the only one that feels that way
Any well-made boot that is good quality, you can get away with regardless of trends. What is the obsession with age? You will get old yourself so be prepared! Youth is only a very short proportion over your entire life, and when you're young you rarely know very much at all. The funniest is watching the trends because they clearly come and go. The best thing to do is put your out of trend items to the back of the wardrobe and then they will come back later. But this applies only if you buy good quality stuff. Fast fashion is death. That's what you should be afraid of. I find young people know very little about quality. End of.
As someone who owns a lot of fine jewelry, Mejuri really isn’t the greatest quality. It’s nice and made with nice metals and stones but the craftsmanship isn’t there. Clasps are flimsy, you can see details inside rings and around claws where they cut corners. I think of it as fast fashion fine jewelry tbh.
White gold was popular for wedding band and engagement band in late 2000s early 2010 I know because I got engaged in 2007 and my now husband asked me what was my preference back then and I told him that I hated white gold and pear shape diamond…. And you could see in his face his surprise because everyone he knew getting engaged were showing off their pear diamond white gold band 🤦🏻♀️ i told him that i couldn’t care less of how much he spent on my engagement ring (never liked the “3 pay check amount “ that is so dumb to push forward) but it need to be a single princess cut “diamond “ and gold YELLOW band! 😂 so with those specification I got a very timeless engagement band
@@le4905 I guess it's was a way to say it's how much a real diamond cost to the average people. but the thing is I recently watch a consumer documentary on renowned brand jewellers and there is still a discrepancies between the real values of the diamond and the price charge by the jewellers to the consumers and unless you are a specialist or bring it to a specialist there is no way the average consumer can tell if they are getting ''scammed' or not.
The whole “rule” for the specific amount of paycheck should be spent on an engagement ring is all coming from the diamond business. De Beers controls majority of the diamond business. So by putting this silly rule of having to spend 3-4 paychecks worth for an engagement ring will always bring a demand for natural diamonds. Diamonds nowadays can be lab grown which is so much cheaper. So there are other different ways to get an engagement ring within budget. De Beers however isn’t going to tell you that. The diamond business is going to tell you that you NEED that natural diamond smh 🤦♀️
@@eunicee999 that I knew the whole De Beers "messaging" and ads influencing customers to buy diamond for engagement ring. and to pay wedding/women magazines to push forward the "rule" for men to spen x amount to make a women "happy". 🙄 but to go back to my first comment the yellow gold versus white gold I do not know where this is coming from ... I just got lost with the wedding band because I dont really care for jewelry until i got married haha and i will say the rose gold also have a moment in the sun right now
@@eunicee999 Yes, but BEFORE all of that; women were not allowed to hold jobs out of the home or have savings accounts. Women were gifted jewelry, which was their "savings account" should they find themselves in a tough spot (widowed, divorced, etc.) because gold and diamonds hold value. So you would want to make sure that the jewelry you receive is worth enough money so that you could sell or pawn it and buy yourself a few months' time. De Beers just capitalized on this and made it into a way to guilt modern men into spending more money.
I know this is random but I'm literally desperate at this point. Does anyone have a reccommendation for dark blue/indigo jeans that are high waist and a slight loose fit but not too baggy? I literally cannot find any jeans like that, they are all either tight around the butt or super baggy :')
I think the gold jewellery not being timeless but a macro trend (as in became popular in the past 10 years) is only for white people. Gold jewellery has always been quite popular amongst POC, specially because it compliments our skin tones better !
It’s funny to me that you consider gold to be the “on trend” metal… in the queer community silver is the IT metal rn. All my peers in NYC (art/fashion students) are wearing silver & the only people I know who wear gold are straight/ business majors with one or two exceptions. It’s so consistent I’d consider it a form of queer signaling

But this applies only if you buy good quality stuff.
Fast fashion is death. That's what you should be afraid of. I find young people know very little about quality. End of.
Stunning
I always thought the 3 paycheck thing was stupid too but as I've gotten older and dug a little deeper into that saying, I get it now.
Everlane way high!

I think the gold jewellery not being timeless but a macro trend (as in became popular in the past 10 years) is only for white people. Gold jewellery has always been quite popular amongst POC, specially because it compliments our skin tones better !
~very demure, very mindful~ video
Excuse my nihilism speaking but what a time to be a female😊
It’s funny to me that you consider gold to be the “on trend” metal… in the queer community silver is the IT metal rn. All my peers in NYC (art/fashion students) are wearing silver & the only people I know who wear gold are straight/ business majors with one or two exceptions. It’s so consistent I’d consider it a form of queer signaling
I feel like the peasant style has to be over soon. It’s been so long and I have never liked it 😂
