I remember these cars. I have always loved the big ones. I started driving at the age of 12 (with dad's help) in a 65 Ford Galaxie 500. At thirteen an Olds Delta 88 four door, fast as hell, for me! I started with the big one's, and have always been fascinated with them although they never were feasible for me to drive any longer when the 90's came along. "Damned gas prices"! I like the way the guy in these vids tells the story about these cars. In actuality, back then, all we wanted was the "look", or the "stare" at the piece of virtual art that was being driven by someone that mostly didn't have a dime in their pocket! "We just got a good deal from someone NOT in the "know"! And did a little fixing and cleaning these Gems up! If I hadn't the opportunity to view this video, I would never had remembered the Monaco. I subbed so that maybe now, I will never forget others that I may have forgotten about! I, too, like the "out-of-the-norm", very rare vehicles.
Back in my cruising days we called a ride like this a "Broughamer", pronounced (broam-er), think Fleetwood Brougham. Built for cruising, class and looking sharp. I miss those days cruising downtown with all the cats and chicks. It' was great times.
Beautiful car. Years ago I had the same year Polara (same car with different styling). I dropped the suspension and mini-tubbed it... looked and sat amazing. I love these old odd-ball cruisers that nobody wants!
I owned a 72 Monaco. What a piece. The factory wheel covers weighed 6 lbs. The headlight doors are adjustable. There is a thumbscrew on the headlight motor to make them close properly. If they don't open, the headlight switch buzzes. Don't try to open them with the lights on. It's a shocking experience. There are 2 taillights and, to replace 1 bulb, there are 36 screws on each side. I do admit that the car did look OK.
BEST episode of Big Muscle ever. A little out of charater, but I'm sure we'll all appreciate the blown Hemis and big blocks and similar next episode. Until then... cruisin. In style.
My dad bought a 69 Monaco Brougham w/440 4bbl carb. Now my dad grew up in Oklahoma and we drove back there in 1970. Coming back to Ca we were cruising in Nevada. Dad was snoozing and I hit 100, 105....110. A few minutes go by and I hear a THRUMP, THRUMP, THRUMPing sound. I hear a voice from above "PLEASE SLOW DOWN TO UNDER 100 MILES PER HOUR". I thought for a second 'yes GOD' then I saw the helicopter fly off. True story.

The dealer badge on the car is Cherry hill Dodge, thats my hometown, and my grandfather was the service manager there 1969 through 1983 sweet car brings back some memories.
I love those textured brocade fabrics used back then. They were every bit as cool as a leather interior, probably more so. Especially combined with leather/vinyl trim, ornate stitch patterns, and brightwork. Made the interior of even a Dodge look like a million bucks.
Pretty cool cruiser. The only 2 things I would change personally, is the color, to a subtly fancy silver with flake, or deep gloss black, the beige really doesn't do this car justice. As for rims, more traditional style rims and tires, meaning, a sane rim size and sane tire profile. Wouldn't go above a 17 or whatever it needs to JUST clear the bigger brakes, and a meaty tire with traditional white letter branding. Then this would be PERFECT, doubt anyone could disagree.
450r guy Dark Forest green with '70's Keystone Mags - the ones with the flared spokes. G-60 White Letter meats in back. Beige is totally cool if it had an accent color like Lavender ('56 Dodge LaFemme) otherwise it's uhhh.....beige.

I have never seen a 72 Monaco, but now I want one! That's one bad ass looking Mopar, only thing I'd change is engine and transmission, 383ci and a 4 speed with a pistol grip shifter and 4:11-4:56 rear gears!
Makes me miss my 71 Chevy Caprice I had 40 years ago. It was a 2 door all black with a 454 rated at 365hp 3.23 posi 12 bolt would light em up :o) Smooth riding cruiser would be cool now with a nice suspension and wheel/tire combo.
I don't understand. Why do so many American's take their cars for granted? They have the BEST selection of old boat sized cars. These odd balls should be cherished, not just the classics! I'd appreciate any if given the chance to own one. I just watch so many videos of Americans calling them ugly and are surprised when anyone puts effort into one, or in many other videos they treat them like shit. And it's not as if they're plentiful. They're all in low numbers these days. Breaks my heart when they smash them up. This particular car is beautiful. I like my wheels to be period correct, so naturally I'm not a fan of those massive things, but the rest of the car is beautiful. Unique, yes, but even in it's stock state, definitely not ugly.
Matt Misanthropy I agree with you. I have always loved the full-size cars from the late 50's, the '60's and the early '70's. I like cars from this period from all three manufacturers, GM, Ford and Chrysler. They beautiful, well built cars with lot's of project potential. It's sad that so many people were just too blind to see it. That seems to be starting to change now that it's almost too late. Too many of them were senselessly destroyed. Hell, if I had my way, no car older than 25 years would be allowed in demolition derbies. I don't know how that rule could ever be enforced though, or who would enforce it. So, we'll just have to watch more potential project cars and parts cars be lost forever. It breaks my heart too.
Not much into these kinds of cars but this is a great looking car. But it needs more than 180-200hp especially from a V8. You'd think it'd have more power with those aftermarket brakes.
The Curious Noob It takes a lot of brake to stop a big heavy car once it gets going fast. Semi's don't have a lot of power, but they have giant brakes. You also have to consider, when you put wheels that big on the car, you need larger brakes to make the now large open area behind the wheels smaller.
Forgot about the beastly wheels... 1972 brakes would probably self-destruct before trying to brake such beasts. It still seems some modest tuning could help it get closer to 300 which would be perfect for something like this. It'd just be terrible to get outrun on the on ramp by a Prius to 65.

Although i like stock wheels, i'm also a fan of the larger diameter wheels. I think when you put a set of big wheels on some of the older less attractive cars, you finally get to see what the designers originally envisioned. They used to put on white wall tires to give the illusion of a bigger wheel, and they also did it in the 50s with the wide whites, and you'll even notice that when the designers would sketch these cars up, they'd often draw them with wheels that were more closer to a 17-18 inch wheel, apposed to the stock 15s. So anyone that says that bigger wheels ruin the look of the car, just know that the designers would have used bigger wheels too if they where available back then.
Check Year One repro 17 inch ....replicas of 15 inch optional wheels for a few makes....they use original center caps, and give room for decent brakes....and LOOK right as fill wheelwell just enough. CRAGAR makes some MAGNUIM 500 replicas in sizes too.
I had a 66 monaco. Same setup, low in the front, nice rake, same torque thrust wheels. (not 22's) The front end has torsion bar springs. you can raise or lower the front end with a crescent wrench in 2 minutes. Was originally a 2bbl 383 with cast-iron intake. But i totally built the motor. was a nice cruiser. It made nice power but with stock suspension, 4 way drums and a 3:23 open rear; it was never going to be fast.
Reminds me of my 2-dr '72 Chrysler Newport Royale - Red w/black vinyl top & parchment-white interior. Always pissed me off when know-nothings mistaked it for a Dodge, and had a Christine-like connection with it. Even when I gave the friend that sold her to me a ride somewhere, he said it felt like the car was driving itself... Not like someone else was just driving it. I miss her so... Should've never agreed to trade her back for that rotted-out, hillbilly wrenched-on Ramcharger that he couldn't get to pass emissions he had gotten from a neighbor.
When I was a kid, our family car was '72 Plymouth Fury III, which is basically the same car but with it's own unique styling. By the time I was 10, we called these gas guzzlers and you would have been embarrassed to be seen riding in something like that. I guess they're only cool again now that 99.9% of them have been crushed.
Panel gaps on old American cars :D But, man, that is one of the coolest cars I have EVER seen, I'd leave it white, with a vinyl top, straighten out all the imperfections and chuck a huge engine in there and annoy everyone in it :D I would not have 22's in the back however, balloon tires on that and it would be even sicker.
Not into the wheels but the shaker hood is actually pretty cool and vaguely factory/stock looking... like it could have been a weird option package right at the dawn of the Brougham era. I agree with the owner that the front end styling is really unique; a lot of stuff going on there with the low-set loop bumper, hidden headlamps and blade fenders, but it all meshes well together.
I like what this guy is doing with the old full-size cars that weren't particularly interesting from the factory. Mike summed it up best though: Big pipes, coming out of a big car, with a big dude behind the wheel.
Love it! "Big pipes coming out of a big car, with a big guy behind the wheel" and that rumbling V8 engine sound. Hell yeah, these full-size Mopars have lots of potential. I've known that for years! I've been into the full-size Mopars for years. I'd like to point out that this car really isn't all that heavy when compared to some of today's muscle. That '72 Monaco is lighter than a modern day Challenger! In my opinion the wheels can stay, they're fine. If they were any larger I'd say toss them. I didn't realise the car was beige, I thought it was white. Since the car already has a black vinyl top and a black interior, I would prefer the whole car to be black, either that, or paint it a dark charcoal grey to go with the black top and interior. The 360 may be fine if all he wants to do is cruise. The 360 could also be built up as a 408 "Stroker". If it were my car and money were no object, LOL, I would slide a mildly built 440 or maybe even a 500 inch "Stroker" RB engine under that Shaker. I'd back that up with a beefed up 727 trans and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Behind that I would put an 8 3/4 inch diff with 3.55:1 Sure Grip. Can you say Big Muscle now? .
i've been looking for this car for ages i seen a glimpse of it in a vid and searched the licence plate and reverse google imaged a screenshot and now i can finally watch it
The only problems i can find in this car are 2. #1: tires look like a teenage girls eyebrows and the spacers are a bit skinny. a bit more tire on it and fatter spacers and this will be a beauty like no other!
Adjust that right headlight to close all the way, give it a nice big block with dual exhaust on it and I'd drive one daily ..... if I could afford to fill the thirsty tank everyday.
Nice car that you just don't see around any more. I like that it's not Big Muscle and can be a daily driver. One thing I noticed, is it's right eye lid is drooping from all the drugs it did back in the 70's. It kind of matches the owners eyes, so I guess it works…….
Nice looking car! But if I was the owner of this car, I would have had the transmission and the engine worked on. For a 360 engine, I would have had put some new MOPAR parts for the engine so it could get more horsepower to match the weight ratio of the car. Having the gas pedal floored and only being able to get to up to 75 miles an hour is embarrassing. A driver should be able to get to 75 miles an hour without flooring the gas pedal. For a 360 engine, It have to do about 360 horsepower or better. It is possible to do so because Edelbrock has a performance kit to make Ford 289/302 engine do about 360 horsepower. Maybe with their performance kit, the engine can do about 400 horsepower. This should be a great improvement in horsepower by only needing to floor it halfway down to the floor and still be able to do 75 miles hour on a highway. They even an upgraded street edition electronic fuel injection kit for better performance for a carbureted engine. Peace, Flood!
I swapped stock Magnum500 (painted 14s w/DEEP trim rings) onto a basic, butt ugly 2 door coupe 1971 Matador...that had SEARS white wall 14 inch 175/75 radial tires on it.14 x 7 inch rims from a BIG Ranchero. Tucked L60 14 bias plys inside rear wells, and G60 14s on the front...without lowering front or rear. Great in parades...as no one KNOWS what it is. Check MATADOR clips on TH-cam...for ads...then NASCAR wins. You DO have to limo tint...and vinyl top DOES help the lines.
One more ... Be nice to put a new Hemi in it just cause we can today..it will be a str8 shot car but dang nice to drive...also looks like the The Ford Galexcy bumper in the back view.
This is what we called a "12 second" car. 12 second quarter mile? Naaa - 12 seconds to get up to 60! Thinking back, I am pretty sure the 360 was the base engine with a 400 and 440 as options. Pretty sure the 383 was retired by 72.

Had a 71 with the 383 police interceptor motor with a super rare carter barrel carb. Loved it. Got into a lot of trouble with that car.

But i totally built the motor. was a nice cruiser. It made nice power but with stock suspension, 4 way drums and a 3:23 open rear; it was never going to be fast.
+El Guapo I've got a 66 Monaco 500. It was my daily driver many years ago, and now it needs a full restoration. Mine has a 383 4V and bucket seats.
Reminds me of my 2-dr '72 Chrysler Newport Royale - Red w/black vinyl top & parchment-white interior. Always pissed me off when know-nothings mistaked it for a Dodge, and had a Christine-like connection with it. Even when I gave the friend that sold her to me a ride somewhere, he said it felt like the car was driving itself... Not like someone else was just driving it. I miss her so... Should've never agreed to trade her back for that rotted-out, hillbilly wrenched-on Ramcharger that he couldn't get to pass emissions he had gotten from a neighbor.
When I was a kid, our family car was '72 Plymouth Fury III, which is basically the same car but with it's own unique styling. By the time I was 10, we called these gas guzzlers and you would have been embarrassed to be seen riding in something like that. I guess they're only cool again now that 99.9% of them have been crushed.

Panel gaps on old American cars :D But, man, that is one of the coolest cars I have EVER seen, I'd leave it white, with a vinyl top, straighten out all the imperfections and chuck a huge engine in there and annoy everyone in it :D I would not have 22's in the back however, balloon tires on that and it would be even sicker.

Not into the wheels but the shaker hood is actually pretty cool and vaguely factory/stock looking... like it could have been a weird option package right at the dawn of the Brougham era. I agree with the owner that the front end styling is really unique; a lot of stuff going on there with the low-set loop bumper, hidden headlamps and blade fenders, but it all meshes well together.
I like what this guy is doing with the old full-size cars that weren't particularly interesting from the factory. Mike summed it up best though: Big pipes, coming out of a big car, with a big dude behind the wheel.

I've been into the full-size Mopars for years. I'd like to point out that this car really isn't all that heavy when compared to some of today's muscle. That '72 Monaco is lighter than a modern day Challenger!
In my opinion the wheels can stay, they're fine. If they were any larger I'd say toss them. I didn't realise the car was beige, I thought it was white. Since the car already has a black vinyl top and a black interior, I would prefer the whole car to be black, either that, or paint it a dark charcoal grey to go with the black top and interior.
The 360 may be fine if all he wants to do is cruise. The 360 could also be built up as a 408 "Stroker". If it were my car and money were no object, LOL, I would slide a mildly built 440 or maybe even a 500 inch "Stroker" RB engine under that Shaker. I'd back that up with a beefed up 727 trans and a Gear Vendors overdrive unit. Behind that I would put an 8 3/4 inch diff with 3.55:1 Sure Grip.

The only problems i can find in this car are 2. #1: tires look like a teenage girls eyebrows and the spacers are a bit skinny. a bit more tire on it and fatter spacers and this will be a beauty like no other!

Adjust that right headlight to close all the way, give it a nice big block with dual exhaust on it and I'd drive one daily ..... if I could afford to fill the thirsty tank everyday.
I have never come across a Chrysler C Body I didn't like. I've been driving them since I was 15. Still do to this day.

Nice looking car! But if I was the owner of this car, I would have had the transmission and the engine worked on. For a 360 engine, I would have had put some new MOPAR parts for the engine so it could get more horsepower to match the weight ratio of the car. Having the gas pedal floored and only being able to get to up to 75 miles an hour is embarrassing. A driver should be able to get to 75 miles an hour without flooring the gas pedal. For a 360 engine, It have to do about 360 horsepower or better. It is possible to do so because Edelbrock has a performance kit to make Ford 289/302 engine do about 360 horsepower. Maybe with their performance kit, the engine can do about 400 horsepower. This should be a great improvement in horsepower by only needing to floor it halfway down to the floor and still be able to do 75 miles hour on a highway. They even an upgraded street edition electronic fuel injection kit for better performance for a carbureted engine. Peace, Flood!

I swapped stock Magnum500 (painted 14s w/DEEP trim rings) onto a basic, butt ugly 2 door coupe 1971 Matador...that had SEARS white wall 14 inch 175/75 radial tires on it.14 x 7 inch rims from a BIG Ranchero. Tucked L60 14 bias plys inside rear wells, and G60 14s on the front...without lowering front or rear. Great in parades...as no one KNOWS what it is. Check MATADOR clips on TH-cam...for ads...then NASCAR wins. You DO have to limo tint...and vinyl top DOES help the lines.

Cool cruiser. Little more power w/ an OD trans would be perfect...cruise around town or across the country. Not a fan of the shaker, but nice overall.
One more ... Be nice to put a new Hemi in it just cause we can today..it will be a str8 shot car but dang nice to drive...also looks like the The Ford Galexcy bumper in the back view.

This is what we called a "12 second" car. 12 second quarter mile? Naaa - 12 seconds to get up to 60! Thinking back, I am pretty sure the 360 was the base engine with a 400 and 440 as options. Pretty sure the 383 was retired by 72.
oh man i love that thing, and i think it's cool that an unknown car like that looks to be some of the inspiration for dodge of today, those taillights are the same ones on the new chargers and durangos of today lol. man i want one of those now, but it needs a diesel (to move that fat a**) and a dif paint job but overall i want it
Just beutiful Dodge Chrysler had intieriors unlike many...I had a 72 ford Galexcy 2 door that had a front seat unlike any other ive seen since..another it has 351 winsor cruise only no musle but what a clean car.. My favorite was A Polara chrysler 68 what another whale...

52 videos in, it would be great if the cameraman could remember to bring a handkerchief to wipe off the lens now and then. Hanging out the window to get a shot is one thing... but every close-up pan when has a squashed bug on the screen. And yes, I know this is free.
