      The 22 is popular because it's cheap and easy to use for target practice and small game as in varmint hunting. The 9mm is popular because it's used in self defense and has knockdown and is a good compromise between power and amount of ammo. The 5.56 is an intermediate round that was developed for the military during the time when a confusing amount of research and standards and thoughts of how to run a fire fight. It was a round made for every soldier to be a machine gunner and it was also to rectify the soldier that would not aim and fire on the enemy. After WW2 the military did a study on how many soldiers would fire their weapons at the enemy in order to kill and it came out that only two out of ten would do so. The military changed training and changed the weapon. Doing both was a mistake at the same time. The 5.56 is a round made from a varmint round and a full rifle round and is not very good at either. Too powerful for varmints and too weak for large game, but is good to use on things in the 30 to 60lb range. The three most popular rounds are actually 22 45 and 12gauge.

    Neither the US government nor the US ammo consumer "subsidizes" the other.
    The US miltary needs to maintain a large production capacity than they need in peacetime because someday it might not be peaceful. Do you think that they can just spin-up an ammo plant with the capacity needed when war breaks out?
    The US can only maintain a high capacity of ammo production if the excess is sold to the consumer. And both the US military and US consumers get an affordable round in the bargain. Going after Lake City is political malpractice. Any change to the status quo would just be simple be vandalism by policy.

    • @jw6921
      @jw6921 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The military buys about 1.5 billion rounds a year(not all 5.56mm). While yes they kind of maintain a production level this is not a high production level. This is only replacing what is used in training and some combat useage. The military has hundreds of billion of rounds stored for combat use. the older ammunition is used for training and the new ammo is to replace the old stocks although there is a lot of new ammunition that is used in training only as it has no combat use. The military forecasts what it needs every year but its a 5 years out forecast. The contractor figures out what it needs to fulfill the orders Id say they more than likely have a built in buffer to account for changes or other problems if all goes well they meet the production needed and then have excess production. While the US government may not exactly subsidize the consumer they do provide the facility and equipment so it is a kind of subsidy. The contractor benefits from the consumer when there is excess production and the consumer benefits because the ammo cost less to produce they they get a benefit there.

    "Military grade" ammo is designed to comply with the Geneva Convention Rules of Warfare. To that end, the small arms ammo is designed to do the least amount of damage to the human body when used. That is why it is very well documented that soldiers have suffered multiple hits with the 5.56 and were still combat effective.

    It was developed out of .222 I'm pretty sure. It was a civilian round. That's why they called it .223 because the lines were getting mixed up. At least I read that in a book like 15 years ago. I may be wrong. It was about the development of modern ammo.

      It used to be called .222 special I believe, which was different than the normal .222 due to higher pressure, so they eventually did rename it to .223 to ease confusion, and there was a lot of that during the early history of the AR platform.

    One more comment, if Lake City plant stops manufacturing for the civilian market it will increase their costs by limiting the amount of through put of the plant! When buying powder by the box car if you cut the amount by 50 % you will drive the cost up for powder and the same goes for all the components they buy, not to mention the cost of jobs, less ammo needs less people! The miners mining the metals used in the Brass, bullets and primers will lose jobs also.

    Military grade 5.56x45 is actually made to a grade that will commonly function in a variety of rifles with regard to wear, condition, cleanliness etc. It isn't loaded to the top of it's capability. The ammunition has a sweet spot for pressure and velocity to obtain the best accuracy. In 5.56x45 that is far below what can be achieved if seeking just the maximum velocity. Function and accuracy is the standard priority in military grade ammunition. The 7.62 ammunition used in WW2 in the garand rifle was loaded far below the capability.
    I would compare the logic in the letter to asking Ford to stop making trucks because F-150s are found at more accident sites than other brands and models of pick up trucks.
