  • 'Because of' and 'Due to' are used interchangeably in spoken English. But should they be? The short answer is no. This is a common mistake.
    For example:
    - We canceled the trip because of the heavy rain. ✅
    - We canceled the trip due to the heavy rain. ❌
    In this English grammar lesson, you'll learn how to use because of vs. due to correctly.
    And you'll understand the distinct differences between the two.
    At the end of the lesson, I have a quick quiz for you to test your knowledge by choosing between because of vs due to.

    Never thought of "due" as an adjective in the phrase "due to". Although it makes total sense. To my embarrassment, the only difference I thought there was between "due to" and "because of" was the level of formality. That's a very eye-opening video.

    Hey! Annemarie! Looking at your examples, I have the impression that we use "Because of" in the active voice and "due to" in the passive voice. I don't know if I'm crazy 😂... or it was just a coincidence or if there's foundation in what I'm saying. Could you clarify for me? Thank so much for wondeful class! ❤

    • @Speakconfidentenglish
      @Speakconfidentenglish  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good observation and good question. 'Due to' is commonly used in the passive form and it follows the 'to be' verb. That said, you'll often hear it used just like 'because of.' Particularly in spoken communication. For example, it would not be uncommon to hear: Due to her hard work and dedication, Laura got promotion at work.

    Hi Annemarie! I've just found a bunch of sentences with 'due to' and they don't seem to follow the rule, e.g., 1. The field trip was cancelled due to the snow storm. 2. Some students may not be able to graduate on time due to cancelled classes. 3. Due to the economic downturn, the housing market is starting to weaken. 4. Due to the high price of gas, the Jones family had no choice but to travel everywhere by bike. Are those sentences incorrect?
