Find in the mitsu manual available on Evoscan the section on the Propeller Shaft. The spinning of the driveshaft can be measured by mating marks, it measures backlash of the rear differential. Most likely it’s that rear carrier bearing that’s causing noise at speed and on shift.

For anyone watching and wondering a few years down the road, that is not normal play for the carrier bearings. Not sure it’s the source of OPs noise, but the carrier bearings in this video are no good and should be replaced.

Mine only has the noise when I let off at around 4K rpm it sounds like a rattle. I’m suspecting carrier bearings as that’s what I’m replacing. I’ll let you know

Describe more detailed when you have the noise.
It is normal to have some play in the diff but this seams to me a lot. Not to shure.
Also bearings of the diff can be worne out, depends on the sound.
I also read that many guys with a lot of power have the isue that the prop shaft hits the under floor.
One said, he solved the problem with stiffening the rubber bearings with window glue. I think that is a smart idea.

When driving at lower rpm in 4th and I give it has, I get a really bad rattle under the car for a few hundred rpm.
Basically when I am under 2500 rpm lets say in 4th and I accelerate at a mild pace, not wot. Maybe 50% there is a rattle under the car.
When under 1500 rpm lets say in third, not giving any gas, the engine will of course sometimes chug. When it does I get a loud bang from under the car. So everytime the engine who chug it bangs underneath

I have this exact same issue on my Evo 8, 158k miles and it makes the clunk noise when I let on and off the throttle. If I'm in fifth gear and cruising around 2.5k rpm you can feel a very bad vibration under the car that is related to the clunking sound. I have the Buschur Racing mustache bar and whiteline diff mount inserts so that is not the issue. I got under the car and my driveshaft makes this exact noise, I suspect is the issue. Have you figured out the cause? I'm thinking bad diff..

My diff had been recently replaced. Although that doesn't mean the diff wasn't the culprit, I was leaning towards that not being the cause. I was thinking based on age and mileage the carrier bearings in the diff were worn out.
I never did find out the issue. I sold the car

Hey did you ever figure this out? I get some nasty clunking in my evo 4 whenever i move the car from a stop, or if I dont perfectly rev-match my shifts. I have a similar amount of driveshaft play up and down, as well as the slight clunk when rotating it by hand.

I never did figure out what the exact car was. But yes, mine would clunk too with imperfect rev matching to next gear or not slipping enough going into the next gear.
It might be the driveshaft or the bushings but I never replaced any of it before selling the car.

@@d-evolution1309 I think its my motor/transmission mounts. I took a video, and noticed the exhaust was moving even more than the driveshaft itself. Cheers bud!

I'm having the same issue on my Evo 8..mechanic said my diff is shot. You managed to figure it out? You said your diff was replaced so then cant be the diff

I havent had it professionally diagnosed. It could be the carrier bearings. It could also be the diff. Not sure. 112k on the driveshaft. I bet stuff is worn out for sure on that.
Diff could also be bad. I really need to have a pro look at it

No. I still thinks its the carrier bearings for the driveshaft but still have not had it professionally looked at
