  • A very simple explanation of a Three Layer Relief Print using 2 blocks. Block #1 is Reductive... The yellow layer is carved first and printed several times so you have enough for your eventual edition. It is then cleaned, and carved further to Reduce the printable surface. It is then printed in blue, over top of the yellow. A third layer is carved in a separate block, and printed Additively over the yellow+blue layers.
--A note on the Reductive and Additive processes --
Reduction prints can be made with many, many layers. Each layer is printed, then the block is reduced, and printed in a different colour. Typically, the colour sequences go from lighter to darker, but depending on the plan for the piece, and the opacity of the colours, this doesn't have to be the case.
Additive prints, similarly, can be made with many layers. In an Additive print, each layer is a separately carved block. Additive prints tend to require more materials (blocks), more carving, and more fussy planning. However, when done well, they combine the possibilities of colours mixing in the final print as they do in Reduction prints, with the ability to keep areas clear for printing unadulterated colours.
