  • The EverQuest Show is counting down the worst expansions in Everquest. We're also talking about the most loved and most hated player race, the froglok.
    Episode 10 of the EverQuest show includes interviews with developer Tom Tobey about creating the froglok race for EQ. Aradune and Rizlona progression servers will both launch on May 27, 2020. And what is the worst expansion in EverQuest?
    How do you say those zone names from Gates of Discord?
    I dredge up previously unseen Holly Longdale footage to comment on what the worst expansion was.

    I'm impressed with the quality of this show. Keep em coming. Having a kid put a damper on my EQ days, which I wouldn't trade for the world, but this show has kept me into it. Thanks! He'll be playing as soon as he's able!

    Your lists are brave and I am impressed that the EQ superiors signed off on even letting you say any of the game is "worst" or "bad". You are spot on though. Your 5 that you list... you hit the nail on the head. Very impressed with your content and it give the franchise a lot of credibility. Well done.

    So happy to see you doing these on a regular basis again, I've always enjoyed your content! (It was also awesome to be able to play in a group with you on Mangler, I play Jasmine and you hung with us in PoN and kind of PL'd us a bit in the hobgoblin caverns late one night ;) ). It would actually be pretty cool to see you do more in-depth look at the gameplay of each expansion, even if it's just not the ones people play over and over again from TLP to TLP. I've been playing off and on since 99, but I stopped playing on live servers around 2008, so I really have zero experience with any expansions past that point. Would be interesting to see a closer look at this content. Looking forward to the next episode =D
    I also wanted to say I loved when you'd do fan spotlights, I enjoyed seeing the stories of other EQers. I know that it's impossible right now to go around visiting people for interviews. Perhaps you could bring us more of their stories via video chats and/or them filming themselves and sending it to you.

    The problem with GoD was the steep difficulty increase without a level cap increase. I was a member of a high-end raid guild at the time and we couldn’t dent the content until after Omens was released and then came back. It was a good expansion; but either came out in the wrong order (Omens should have been first) or should have had the level-cap increase instead of Omens.
    I would have put Luclin on the list TBH. The Nexus portal feature was decent and then was immediately made worthless by PoP book travel. The vast majority of the content is just vast emptyness was boring. Mobs weren’t worth hunting or farming as their HP and defenses were way above similar cons in the first three expansions. I did like how beautiful the castle city looked; and the progression / key system to unlock raid areas was challenging and fun (and also vastly surpassed by PoP as well).

    Loving the content from these videos! As someone that has only dabbled in EQ1 (I started with EQOA, FFXI, EQ2, and so forth) I'm getting to see a glorious side of a world I never played much of, but really wish I had. While it is awesome to see the expansions listed in quick succession, it would be really great to have a more in-depth look at those expansions and the content within as well as how the community transitioned with it!
    Additionally, I love any time bits of EQ2 are thrown in, and would love to see more info on EQOA - even though I'm sure that is not the focus here.
    I really hope to get in to playing EQ1 full on in the future. The new Time-Locked servers just opened, although i'll probably have to wait for the next round.

    I feel like you could do a Top 5 worst, Top 10 best in a sort of "then and now" view. I agree Gates of Discord was so hard and unplayable for any but the most hardcore, and was one of the reasons that I stopped playing EQ at that expansion back in the day, but having gone through the expansion again on Selo, I absolutely loved it. The level of difficulty was perfect 16 years later after everything had been extensively documented and researched, and the open world content was pretty fun racing against other guilds for.
    Keep up the stuff though, great production quality and always enjoy these!

    Gates is my favorite expansion... Rough launch for sure, and they should have increased the level cap to 70. But it still has the best raid zone of any MMO IMO, with Tacvi. And come on, if you're a melee, you probably wanted the Lizardscale Plated Girdle. I honestly think the monster design is the absolutely amazing. The Muramites are bad, like really bad, and EQ needed a really bad villain after we got done killing all of our deities... I think that had Sony left Gates in the oven to cook a bit longer instead of pushing it out before it was ready, it would have been received much better regardless of other titles new to the market. It was a very polarizing expansion due to this.

    Froglok in EverQuest did what WoW did with their worgen model. They started with a classic monster that’s iconic to their respective franchise, took everything charming and endearing about it and threw it in the trash.
    The result in both cases was goofy, gangly, graceless eyesore.

    GoD was my favourite expansion, brutal that required good team work and beaten at level 65 back in the day. It still sends shivers down my spine just thinking about the Inktu`Ta stone mites corpse runs as a necro and of course the great music. After a 10 year break I tried EQ last year and was unimpressed how easy it had become, hence over run by bots.

  • @Darkvoid2100
    @Darkvoid2100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    GoD was easily the worst expansion. As an Enchanter I did enjoy being crucial in the trials by abusing charm. It really was intense as the enemies hit for 1200 and I had probably 6000hp?
    But the whole thing was just painful; the random see invis, the amount stuff hit frr, and the crazy amount of trash mobs placed around. One small mistake and everything was a wipe.
    Looking back it was amazing that they tried to do something totally different and I respect that. But After the long era of Pop, accompanied by some really decent smaller expansions, GoD was such a blow. It's a shame that the damage it did was never really reversed.

    First, terrific channel and you do a great job with the production, etc. I hope views continue to increase for you and we have been spreading the word. Your list is pretty good. I think one of the big reasons LoY gets trashed so hard is when it came out, it really didn't mark a step forward. If you were current in the game, the expansion really didn't offer you much in terms of upgrades or content worth doing, etc. For characters that were coming up, it was a blast. I spent a lot of time with a group that had lower level characters and it was a lot of fun. GoD was a guild killer. Bad timing with EQ2 and WoW and just a bomb of an expansion. So many of the early raid guilds perished because of that expansion. Keep up the good work!

  • @thinkingthingsthrough3822
    @thinkingthingsthrough3822 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    During Live release our guild rolled into GoD thinking they could just power through to the good stuff day one. We had been killing Quarm for months at that point and fairly easily. Our primary raid Team mashed through the easy stuff and ran face first into Tipt and Vxed, dying enough two members had to relevel to 65. I went in with my dbl SK crew as a chanter and with just the charm spell we managed to finish first a full day before they got through it because one un-hasted Hynid or Imp was doing the DPS of our entire group. Then came the horror of Uqua, forever a 4 letter curse word in my vocabulary. It took us months to get enough people flagged and geared to safely move on to the next zones, largely because our first win had so many dead and there was a bug that dead people didn't get flagged, and it took 3 more weeks to get a win with neough alive we could do a higher zone boss. Had to farm Time 1 and 2 and Elemental gods constantly to get enough people up to even surviving basic encounters there. Brutal!

    My list would be almost the same. I'm still wondering where the combine spires came from...
    Posible ideas:
    - The portals that help us. Allakhazam, EQResource, Fanra's wiki, Raidloot, the class boards, etc...
    - Dragons, Dragons, Dragons / Giants, Giants, Giants / Death, Death, Death. Not talking about the events, but some fun to know and recap.
    - Posible slot: Lore lesson per episode.
    - Cross version characters, the ones in EQ and EQ2. Maybe zones comparison.

      I actually rather like both. The original Frogloks, or what we can call the "Kruptan" Subspecies are just adorable. The big heads, big eyes, and rather appropriate floppy appearance makes them a big cartoon-ish, but instantly endearing. I especially give EQ2 props for their updated take on it, which keeps the same visual notes while being higher poly. The "Guktan" subspecies that were added playable lose some of that adorable quality, but I still find them to be charming, and with their own unique animations, they carry a life of their own. Not to mention, watching hop and flip in combat is just a hoot. Further props to EQ2, the Guktans playable in the sequel have some of the most hilariously awesome animations if you make them Monks; Froglok Breakdance Fighting is always a win.

    I haven't played for years , it was great to see this.
    I would disagree with LoY being on the bottom 5. It introduced expanded bank space, excellent levelling zones and if you were a casual player it gave you access to half-as-good top level spells - the rare 60 spells you only got from raiding. I remember as a Shaman not having Torpor, it was stupidly expensive on the bazaar, but being able to go and get Stoicism (level 45 spell) from LoY was huge. It was the first HoT you could get as a Shaman and it was a game changer.
    GoD was both the worst and one of the best expansions. At launch it was so ridiculously hard you couldn't be in there. I was in a casual raiding guild at the time and even with reasonable gear from Tier 1/2 PoP you got owned stepping in there. Half the mobs saw through invisibility - even moving through the entrance zones was horrific. Fast-forward completing the next expansion level caps and getting your level 70 spells, GoD became a great expansion. The mechanics of the zones were clever - the raids were epic. Once it became do-able I would say the content was first-rate. Solo AA grinding opportunities were everywhere - I must have ground out 100's of AAs with Shaman, Druid, Necro, Magician.

    Sadly, I fell away from Everquest around 2006. My beloved guild, Triad Continuum on the Luclin Server, had some issues with power raiding vs. friendship/casual gaming, and the Planes of Power with all the flagging requirements made for a lot of gnashing of teeth with newbies getting drops before guild veterans, like myself. I transferred to the Quellios server, not knowing that my Enchanter epic would be left behind (unlike the epic for mages, who got to keep them.) Despite many protests from me to GMs, they never allowed me to get my stuff back. So, a toast, to Masoquestor, Odomora, Amanita, Elandryl, Valas, Guglug, and many, many others whom I looked up to and loved, here is to you. My time in EQ is remembered with much fondness and nostalgia. It was a special time, like magic in a bottle. Like faded pictures, they stay with me. Patricia Goldmoon, Enchanter, Triad Continuum, Luclin Server.

    My least favorite expansion was Planes of Power because it dispersed the playerbase and removed the dependency on wizards and druids to port. Those spells felt powerful and forced everyone to make friends. Friends are what made EQ great. I came back in 2014 and played p99 for a couple years and it wasn't nostalgia, the original EQ was a good game through and through.

    I lost interest with Gates of Discord. I felt like my character's life was always in danger, and it also felt like I was a lowbie traveling through a high-level zone. EQ2 came out that November, and it was terrible. My computer couldn't handle it. I bought WoW and it worked perfectly. That was all she wrote. I play EQ like one month every few years for nostalgia. Legacy of Ykesha was never really a full expansion.. it was expansion-lite.. Rain of Fear was an attempt to be 'episodic' in feel which is why it was rolled out in segments. I was actually really happy with the work I did on Rain of Fear.. Gates was god-awful, especially in balance, but also because it felt so completely disconnected with EQ lore. It just didn't make sense. A perfect example was the zone, Uqua.. Immediately after it was populated, the designer who did the zone quit SOE to go work on Vanguard, so it was never balanced in any way. On launch, it was an absolute disaster and almost made me quit the game.

      it felt alien and strange, but I would say the worst was all the bugs and the overtuning (no wonder people said it was tuned for level 70) I believe we were told that it was tuned for 65 and 70 was not planned until OoW but was that true? and I believe some of it was uncompleteable because the zone wasn't even ready at launch? and as was mentioned in the video, so many odd bugs that just made it really hard to love.

    Best episode so far. I HATED GoD when it first came out, but after running through Vxed and Tipt 100+ times as a bard puller to flag everyone I actually started to enjoy it. Following along with the lore and completing 'Breakdown In Communications' as we progressed was actually.....fun.
    Rating my top 5 worst expansions? (House of Thule was my last expansion and I only did the group content)
    5. PoR - Ruined Freeport and just wasn't that interesting lore wise.
    4. Underfoot - you thought GoD was over tuned, hah!

    Haven't seen the list yet, but Prophecy of Ro, hands down the worst. Sandwiched in between DoDH and TSS, both great expansions, but oh boy PoR just really phoned in it.
    Edit: Watched the list. Glad to see PoR got a prime spot. Makes sense that GoD was #1, I have heard the horror stories of it's roll out. Oddly enough, if you play it now on a TLP, it's one of the best xpacs. Tons of content, BiC and other quests for those who want a challenge. The zones are dangerous again, the raiding is great, especially Tacvi. It's a nice change of pace to have an end zone without armies of trash to clear... Looking at you, Vex Thal, PoTime, every LDoNn raid....

      GoD definitely had the most potential than the other 4 on the list. GoD was where SOE needed to come to the realization that shoving a new expansion out the door every 8-12 months was not going to be sustainable and should have polished it up while working on OoW and releasing both as a single huge expansion a year later.

  • @doctornachoz8099
    @doctornachoz8099 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Definitely Gates of discord as the worst by a mile followed by PoR, but Underfoot should be in that list. A lot of people don't like TBM, but the rewards were great (progressive spells and the armor/augs). TBL is another bad expansion. The zones are locked behind progression and most players never finished the smoke trials. In fact, the smoke trials are harder than late game missions which is so backwards.

    Great video's, keep it up please. As far as the worst EQ expansion in my opinion had to be Omen's of War at launch, it was almost unplayable. Yes, they eventually worked out some of the issues, but overall that expansion sucked. The best expansion I enjoyed had to be Secrets of Faydwer, I had a such a great time during that expansion. Not to derail this thread, but fingers crossed that Pantheon brings back the EQ experience.

    Gates of Discord was the last expansion I bought for EQ1 before I permanently moved to EQ2. I never did get to play any of the content in that expansion because it was way too hard to do solo and most of my guild abandoned EQ1 for EQ2 or WOW at that point. I still play EQ2 today though, so happy with that.

    Man, I remember the Froglok’s introduction and their invasion of Guk. (GMs would even give you a glamour to make you one for a limited time) Then we had their launch and everyone would race to see who could get 60 first. I was number two on Torv for a little bit with my Frog Paladin.

      On Morrel Thule (the first RP sever) my crew gathered as many evil races as we could and we re-took Grobb. Killed every Froglok that popped. Beat down several Guildmasters, and held the city for hours on release day. Buddercup the Troll tanked most of them for hours on end, especially the dam Paladin GM. He took like 2 hours to kill. Longer than the High Elf one in Felwithe!

    Ykesha was actually a decent expansion. One reason it wasn't well received, though, is because it wasn't aimed at the top level players in the game. Guilds who had been farming Plane of Time were left with... More farming Plane of Time!
    I liked Gates, mostly. It was too difficult for the level available at the time, but I did get as far as Ikkinz flagging, even not being in a top tier guild, prior to the level cap increase. I don't recall if any guilds completed it before the increase to level 70, but I would think the best organized and capable guilds at the time probably could have eventually managed it.

    • @bobbun9630
      @bobbun9630 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cazil004 Yeah, I used to use a corner near the "village" in Gunthak for that purpose, as well as the hidden entrance to Nadox. The ships in Gunthak didn't have enough mobs to use them for power leveling, but they were great cash camps for appropriately leveled characters, as the pirates dropped lots of gems.

    You can argue that these are not the 5 worst expansions. You cannot argue that GOD was not the worst though. What a crucial/fragile time in EQ's history and SOE really dropped the ball with this expansion. Such a pivotal time (EQ2/WOW being released), and EQ needed a solid follow-up after POP and they totally botched it.

    • @FatalFist
      @FatalFist 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember how controversial GoD was simply because people of Blades of Wrath would rant about how the enemies were overtuned to players above some of the BIS gear, and so many of my friends were utterly turned off. Then WoW launched and they all left.

    • @jimluebke3869
      @jimluebke3869 ปีที่แล้ว

      @AmateurThespian I remember being really frustrated with Gates when it came out, playing a not all that well geared Rogue. You can solo Gates now with most classes, can't you? (Especially the SK and Necro characters I rolled...)
      I'm somewhat tempted to go back, just to complete some of that content. Then I notice my inventory clogged with all the No Drops from what I was doing last time I was on though, get distracted by the cheapness of the graphics, frustrated waiting for spawns, distracted by the side quests to gear up...
      Mostly though, something's missing without anyone else (my old friends) playing that content. The sense of urgency, the sense of fascination -- some of it is memetic. And it's heartbreaking that Defiant gear has made all the original gear utterly obsolete.
      Sure, I could try out the latest expansion's content just to group with actual people (who are happy enough to see a casual come back), but you're eternally under-geared and under-AA'd for that content. And I realize I just don't have the time to commit, because the game's advancement is always balanced to take up ALL your spare time between one expansion and the next. I wonder, will the EQ servers still be active after I retire?
      Nowadays I turn on the music -- the original Barbeau soundtrack -- because that can give me the old emotions much more than playing the actual game can.
      I wonder, would it help if EQ produced a series of other games for more casual gamers, that linked into Norrath but could be run on a phone? While I did my stint on WoW, I still had an EQ bazaar alt running, buying low and selling high. That, I could probably have done on a thinner (low-bandwidth) client. Add the chat function and you're still connecting with your guildies.
      I wonder, is there a way for them to make a series of less committment-heavy games (maybe even idle games) that still hooked into the world of Norrath, like a bazaar trader? You'd have to try that out on one server at a time, lest the new game wreck the original gameplay. Miniature wargames, (or card games?) populated with names and profiles out of the old databases?
      Or, could they just go back through and set up Achievement lists for a lot of the old zones and quests, to help generate and then scratch that completionist itch? Hm.

A Froglok character is my first character I've created since returning to EQ since they hadn't been introduced yet when I ceased playing EQ years ago & so far mostly enjoying EQ during my return. I still think the name "Rain of Fear" should've been "Reign of Fear". Just an idea, but you could present a video with perhaps best class duo/+ combinations, &/or classes that compliment each other the best, I know it's subjective mostly. Thanks for the videos.

    Btw since you seem to have the ability to reach out to devs, would love it if you could get in contact with a dev that would be able to finally put this rumor to rest
    1.) Was Mayong Mistmoore ever in the game - alpha, beta, or live - in Castle Mistmoore?
    2.) Was Mayong Mistmoore's original in-game model the model that is now used for the Maestro of Rancor in the Plane of Hate?
    The rumors are that Mistmoore used to be in the zone - Castle Mistmoore - and that he spawned in the tower and that his original model was reused for the Maestro (which makes a lot of sense - the Maestro model has a crude beta look to it, is a vampire, has a crown.)
