Really awesome tutorial. Maybe you could make another one for the small axes and show of different techniques with it? Like chopping wood horizontally.

Thank you for the great techniques!! Possible tip for you and others, I saw a video where a man put old tire around the log that was being split. When the log split it stayed n the center so he chopped the bigger pieces making it easy to collect and stack them.

OK - some pro tips: To get more power and much greater accuracy, don't start your swing with both hands at the end of the handle. The left, or non-dominant, hand should slide down to join the right hand AS the axe comes down, not BEFORE it starts coming down. Takes a little practice, but when you've got it you'll notice the difference - for a start, you'll be able to split precisely where you want, instead of hoping for the best. I can split a matchstick lengthways like this. Also, learn to put all your power into the downstroke until just before the moment of impact. If you're still pushing down on impact, your arms absorb the shock and will give you trouble after a while - repetitive strain injury. Have a car tyre on the chopping block to contain your cut logs. Without it, they fly off any old how and you've got more work/more bending to collect them. Keep your legs well apart, for stability and safety. Wear tough boots, for the obvious reason. You'll inevitably get the occasional over-reach, when the axe-head misses on the far side of the log. This can snap the handle, so protect it by wrapping something around the vulnerable few inches of shaft behind the head. I use a patch of welly-boot rubber, topped with a patch of thin steel sheet. Otherwise, thick cord or whatever else will do the job. If the blade gets stuck in the log, as shown in the video, whilst you're busy levering it out, keep your hand on the log well away from the axe - it can come out quicker than you expect and bounce down on your hand. Practise. That do?

Nice video….question does wood have to be seasoned to split with an ax, I have a fosters ax and I struggle with splitting wood….the wood I have is already split but I’m trying to get smaller pieces which is why I’m trying to split. Thanks

Watched the video without sound first, after reading the website. Needed to watch it without sound as I’m nursing a baby. About to go chop some wood this afternoon and needed a refresher. Started to read the transcript- first sentence- pretty cold outside BOYS. Huh - liked the tips but come on now!

I just don't understand using your dominant arm at the base of the axe handle, I use my dominant arm to aim where I'm swinging so that just don't make no sense
